📊Crunchbase counted 11 new unicorns in March, including the first unicorn from Central Asia - Uzbekistan. Interestingly, among these unicorns, only one is related to AI, but three are related to crypto and web3. However, only 4 out of 11 unicorns are from the United States. Among the curious unicorns is the fairly well-known Liquid Death project, which sells water in cans. He had a $67 million round at a $1.4 billion valuation. Me and Christopher Niall Rayner had a discussion about Switzerland’s new open-source law and it sure is complex. Switzerland's recent mandate that all government software must be open-source has sparked a lot of debate. On one hand, it promotes transparency and community collaboration, but on the other, it poses significant challenges, especially for smaller companies. Smaller companies pour blood, sweat, and tears into developing software that manages that no one else uses. However, under this new mandate, they will be required to open-source their solutions if they want to compete for government tenders. Me and Niall discussed some pros and cons of this. Pros: 1. Transparency: Open-source software allows for greater transparency, making it easier to identify and fix security vulnerabilities. 2. Collaboration: Encourages community contributions which can lead to faster innovation and improvements. 3. Cost Savings: Reduces costs for the government as companies avoid licensing fees and have more control over the software's development. Cons: 1. Exclusion of Innovative Solutions: Smaller companies might be excluded from tenders if they are unable or unwilling to open-source their proprietary solutions. 2. Security Risks: While transparency can lead to security improvements, it also means that vulnerabilities are exposed to potential malicious actors. 3. Financial Impact: Companies which rely on proprietary technology for their competitive edge, may suffer financially if forced to open-source their software. In practical terms, this policy means that innovative but proprietary solutions from smaller companies might not be considered in government projects. When selling these policies to the public, the focus is often on reducing the dominance of big tech. However, it can inadvertently stifle innovation from smaller players who can't afford to give away their trade secrets. While the move towards open-source in government software has its merits, it's essential to balance these benefits with the need to foster and protect innovation from smaller companies. One stone, three birds? Tokenization is making history. Fnality International and HQLAᵡ recently completed an intraday repo settlement executed on Deutsche Börse's Eurox Repo F7 market. HQLAx handled the collateral leg. Fnality's Sterling Fnality Payment System handled the cash leg. The DvP was both instant and cross-chain. There are 3 key unlocks from this: 1️⃣ counterparty risk elimination Banks can now complete transactions with each other in central bank money directly and atomically. Fnality holds an omnibus account at the Bank of England where it leverages its Enterprise Ethereum version blockchain to provide instant settlement rail for its banking clients. Banks use Fnality’s connection to the CHAPS payment system to top up or withdraw from the omnibus account. So far Lloyds Banking Group, Santander and UBS are live on the network. 2️⃣ interoperability The transaction unlocks interoperability between Fnality's Enterprise Ethereum blockchain and HQLAx's R3 blockchain. 3️⃣ intraday liquidity Banks can now conduct intraday repos with precise liquidity control down to seconds, leveraging on blockchain's fast finality. Fnality's sterling payment system is the world’s first regulated blockchain-based wholesale payment system to settle transactions that digitally represent funds held at a central banks. With this, both Fnality and HQLAx plan to launch a live product by Q4 this year. Looks like the $1.5 trillion Sterling repo market is likely to be moving onchain little by little. early token liquidity murders the long-term prospects of a crypto project. early liquidity undermines sustainable growth by promoting short-term games and thinking. yes it takes a long time to build anything good - but look at most of the projects that raised ICO funds in 2017 - with few exceptions, most grabbed the bag and then had zero follow-through most startups use a 1-year cliff and 4-year vesting schedule for a reason. that's how you align the interests of founders, team members, and investors toward long-term goals, ensuring everyone is committed to the project’s success over time. early liquidity shifts focus from developing solid technology and distribution to generating hype. when the priority becomes marketing over substance, the project’s core objectives suffer, affecting its credibility and potential impact. considering lock-ups and vesting periods benefits crypto projects by aligning everyone’s interests for the long term. adopting these strategies promotes stability and encourages a focus on delivering real value. implementing token lock-ups isn’t about restricting freedom. it’s to ensure that all stakeholders are dedicated to the project’s long-term success. this can foster a more committed community and a stronger foundation for growth - and proving that this space can actually think long-term

There's a lot of discussion on X/Twitter about the current low-float, high FDV phenomenon among crypto projects, which is causing subpar returns for liquid buyers. In summary, the current VC model in crypto is broken, and it needs fixing. Building a transparent and active secondary market for insiders holding locked positions (investors and teams alike) is almost an immediate fix to the issue. Natural price discovery is built only through smooth trading rails, both in private and public markers. Founders blocking secondaries signals two insecurities to the market: (i) that they're not confident in current valuations, and (ii) they are over-protective of their TGE/Spot price. Investment portfolios around the world saw major gains following the election, and Bitcoin hit $88,000, a new record. The promise of less regulation, more acquisitions, and more IPOs has brought renewed excitement to the venture capital market. Managers around the world predict increased liquidity as part of the Venture Trends survey. - / / / Limited Partners flocking to Emerging Managers Emerging managers from around the world have been seeing a surge in interest from limited partners, even before the US election. This followed a traditionally slow period in late August and September. The most active segment of LPs are emerging limited partners, who are high net worth individuals, #familyOffices, and institutions that have just started investing in venture within the last couple of years. The Decile Hub system is tracking over 150,000 of these LPs, growing by as many as 1,000 new emerging LPs being added per week.

Next year, will be my 10th anniversary in the crypto markets. I moved from tradfi to the crypto markets in 2015. Seems like yesterday! In the face of the next Super Cycle, here's what I learned and what my funds are preparing for: 1. The markets are not regulated. Don't act like they are; 2. Practice Risk Management, NOT get rich quick schemes, no need for 50x leverage (or in my funds' case any leverage) to make outsized returns that are 10x to 100x; 3. Its Global, some of the best projects are not onshore. Don't hold yourself to country focused. The old VC model of the company "has to be down the street" is over; 4. Stay Calm. Volatility is a killer in these markets. They are 24/7 and don't quit; 5. Weekends and holidays (lower liquidity) is when you'll see markets move based on some agenda; 6. Governments are not our friends (yet), I've never thought I would be in this business for 10 years and not have regulations that make sense. Crazy! ; 7. If its too much to handle and keep up with, put some capital into a fund. There are a lot of funds out there. We have two. Both beat Bitcoin on a regular basis and are very conservative. No leverage with great returns. 11 unicorns in the last bull cycle. Be ready!
