As the largest office tenant in Pacific Place, Deloitte China has occupied the high zone of One Pacific Place since 2006, covering approximately 125,200 sq. ft. across six floors, accounting for around 20% of the office tower’s total space. Deloitte China CEO Patrick Tsang says, "As a global connected and locally rooted professional services organisation, we are fully committed to the Hong Kong market. [Press Release] "VC to Start 'Buyout' Investment...Will venture and start-up M&A be activated?" https://lnkd.in/gvAe4Zjm The venture capital (VC) industry is expanding into “buyout” investments, which involve taking control of a venture or startup and selling it at an increased valuation. To this end, they are establishing private equity (PE) divisions within their organizations and actively recruiting buyout experts. This is due to the fact that the valuation of venture and startup companies has been significantly reduced due to the investment cold snap, creating a favorable market for buyout investments. According to the VC industry on the 19th, Murex Partners, a mid-sized VC with 400 billion won in assets under management (AUM), has recently hired PE investment specialists. Murex Partners, which switched to a self-represented division system earlier this year, has Lee Bum-seok in charge of the PE division and Kang Dong-min in charge of the VC division.  The investment targets are traditional SI (system integration) companies that are willing to innovate digitally. Traditional SI companies are also willing to enter new businesses such as artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud, but they have been limited in recruiting technology and manpower. “Our goal is to increase enterprise value through digital transformation of existing businesses rather than financial engineering approaches such as acquisition, restructuring, and reorganization,” said Lee Bum-seok, CEO of Murex Partners. ”We are also considering M&A with B2B cloud startups that can create synergies.” While there have always been VCs with PE businesses, most have focused on growth capital, mezzanine, and secondary investments in pre-IPO and pre-listing companies. “Buyout” investments, where management is acquired, have been rare. The number of VCs entering the buyout market is likely to increase. This is because companies that were previously invested at high valuations are delaying their listings and finding it difficult to recover their investments. Venture and startup companies that have difficulty raising funds are in high demand to sell, and the number of companies willing to acquire them is also increasing. Deregulation of venture funds is also cited as a reason to enter the buyout market. In December last year, the government amended the Venture Investment Promotion Act to allow venture funds to establish special purpose companies (SPCs) that can borrow from financial institutions. Until now, venture funds were not allowed to make leveraged investments using loans, unlike PEFs. The obligation to invest 40 percent of assets in new shares was also abolished. “I think VCs with strong networks can be competitive in venture and startup M&As, while traditional PEFs can handle large-scale M&A deals,” said a VC industry insider.

More sustainability schemes recognized through the Coffee Sustainability Reference Code. GCP announced the recognition of Cooxupé’s Gerações, Comexim’s Green Trace, Perhusa’s ARTS and Touton’s PACT as equivalent to the Coffee SR Code, 2nd party assurance. The number of sustainability schemes recognized by GCP as 3rd party and 2nd party assurance now amounts to 23, representing encouraging progress for sector alignment on coffee sustainability. Cyclone Temu 'shakes up the world' In early August, Colin Huang, founder of e-commerce company PDD Holdings, became the richest person in China with assets of $50.8 billion. His fortune has increased due to the success of Pinduoduo and Temu, two platforms specializing in low-cost goods. Pinduoduo has thrived due to domestic consumers' thrifty habits, while Temu, launched in the US in September 2022, has quickly expanded to 70 markets across North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Temu app downloads surged from 440,000 in its first month to 41.3 million by March 2024, with website visits reaching 479 million. The platform's gross merchandise volume (GMV) has skyrocketed from $290 million in 2022 to a projected $29.5 billion in 2024. Despite its rapid growth, analysts believe Temu does not threaten Amazon's market leadership yet. Temu attracts customers through low prices, free shipping, and a flexible global supply chain. It incorporates group buying and shoppertainment strategies that enhance customer engagement. Temu has also heavily invested in marketing, with ad spending significantly increasing in 2023. However, Temu faces scrutiny over labor conditions, environmental concerns, and product quality issues, reminiscent of challenges faced by Shein. Concerns have emerged in Europe regarding product safety and advertising practices, leading to regulatory scrutiny. Additionally, Temu's policies regarding returns sparked protests from sellers in China.
