Porto-based label Kokölò returns with its 4th release, Alfonsvs' 'Maybe Memories Are Our Only Relief' EP.
Since its inception in 2022, the label's journey has been defined by the ear-catching releases from the anonymous Rave Child and Alfonsvs. They have instantly captured the attention of the electronic music community, as several respected DJs have shared their insights on previous releases, demonstrating their support. Laurent Garnier, Peggy Gou, and Freddy K are just a few names on the list that showcase the label's broad appeal.
Unsurprisingly the label's monthly events are now considered a staple of Porto's thriving scene as they shape its unique sound.
On his latest EP, Alfonsvs is inspired by that sense of melancholia that comes up from thinking back to happy memories, knowing that we can never feel the same again. With this in mind, Alfonsvs presents a trio of techno tracks that are especially crafted for the dancefloor and the ongoing festival season, and the emotions they bring up. The opening track, "Eternal Comeback," takes listeners on a bass-heavy techno journey that reaches a euphoric crescendo, blending in field recordings inspired by the artist's recent travels to Asia. The EP's eponymous track, "Maybe Memories Are Our Only Relief," catches our attention immediately with its hypnotic fusion of distorted synths and drums, creating a potent late-night anthem meant to be embraced with care. Bringing the EP to a compelling close is "Trouble in Paradise," a groove-infused composition featuring magnetic moments, built upon punchy drums, stab sounds, acid touches and ethereal pads – all masterfully enveloped in a warmly embracing distortion.
The release is once again accompanied by the beautiful artwork of David Duarte. His work portrays the inner battle many in our generation face daily: the fear of never reaching the levels of happiness and fulfillment they once felt.
Alfonsvs ‘Maybe Memories Are Our Only Relief’ is released via Kokölò in October 2023.
