The Kenyan Environment, Climate change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary’s recent directive to remove asbestos from buildings in 3 months is one of the best moves towards protecting human and animal Health. As this is one of the best ideas of all time, it is prudent to look into the practicability of the provided duration, taking into consideration the hazards that can be caused if the asbestos disposal protocol is not adhered to. Asbestos removal to disposal Must look into containment systems that prevent asbestos fibres from contaminating the soil, water, or air. Asbestos exposure has been linked to various Public Health risks, and thus, its removal should be done in a manner that doesn’t pose health risks during removal and transportation disposal. To ensure removal complies with local, state, and federal regulations, various state agencies, such as Public Health, Water Resource agencies, Environmental and Health organizations, and civil societies, have to participate in the process.  #Environment #humanhealth

Forests are the main water source for many rivers and thus depletion of the same can result in a water crisis for many communities around the world. The Mau forest complex for example is a source for many rivers among them being the great transboundary Mara River which is a mother of great Biodiversity.  Historically, African people have been known to migrate from one place to another and the people who finally came to settle near the Mau forest are the Kipsigis and Maasai tribes. The 2 tribes' economic activities; livestock rearing and crop cultivation demanded the availability of land and as their population spontaneously grew, they needed more land to fulfill their livelihood demands and the forest areas were one of the available spaces. This practice was an environmental threat and it called for the government to devise a smart mechanism to curb the challenge whereby the Nyayo tea zones buffer was set in Mau complex, Aberdare, Mt Kenya, Nyambene, Mt Elgon, and Cherangany forests. The establishment of the buffer was to limit further encroachment to the forests by the neighboring communities.  It is now so many years after the establishment of the tea buffer, and since then job creation and environmental protection goals have been achieved. #Environment #sustainability
