We are pleased to share a learning brief compiled by DG Murray Trust. This document explores the efforts of Southern Africa Food Lab, Siyavuna Development Centre, Seriti Institute (NPC), Thanda and Khulisa SA NGO in building sustainable local value chains and food systems while transferring skills and knowledge about agroecological farming practices, smallholder farmer development and entrepreneurship. The sanitation sector and the funding landscape have changed since FSMA opened its doors. FSMA is closing in response to those changes. The Shift the Power movement and COVID-19 pandemic have altered donor priorities, directing more funding towards organisations working on the ground in low- and middle-income countries and away from those in high-income countries. Unfortunately, FSMA couldn't develop an independent sustainable financial model to support our ongoing operating and programme costs. Without secure funding, FSMA is forced to close as an organisation. As the landscape changes, we fully support the voices calling for direct investment in local organisations. FSMA is giving way to a future where donors prioritise support for local FSM networks and sanitation service providers. Given the current legislative landscape, the requirements of funders, and the increasing need to demonstrate accountability and transparency, there is a growing demand for impact evaluation in the voluntary sector. However, accurately measuring and reporting the impact, particularly on social change, is challenging. Financial constraints, methodological uncertainties, and poor or incomplete data contribute to this difficulty. Third-sector organizations can benefit from the tactful adaptation of existing and publicly available tools such as the Volunteer Investment and Value Audit (VIVA) tool, LM3 social impact tool, and Social Return Assessment (SRA) tool. #socialimpact #evaluation #research #evaluationresearch

The county green finance assessment  identified four investment clusters with significant green finance potential: agriculture food baskets; ASAL ecosystems with high renewable energy potential; cities and urban centres; and rapidly urbanising counties. These clusters offer low-hanging fruit for green investment in climate-resilient agriculture, renewable energy, water infrastructure, eco-tourism, green housing, and urban transport. FSD Kenya will continue supporting the 10 assessed counties through the County Green Project Preparation Facility, managed by PwC Kenya, which will shortlist viable green projects, prepare them for funding, and engage with investors in the green finance market. This Climate and Clean Air Coalition assessment, supported by SEI York and SEI Africa authors, examined the relationships between sustainable development and short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), greenhouse gases and other polluting emissions. The African Assessment clearly demonstrated that action that is both integrated across climate and clean air objectives and coordinated across the five key sectors can potentially deliver: 1️⃣ Substantial reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG), including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), SLCPs, including black carbon, ozone precursors and hydrofluorocarbons, and other air pollutants (40-80% by 2063); 2️⃣ Prevention of 200,000 premature deaths per year by 2030 and 880,000 premature deaths per year by 2063 due to outdoor and indoor air pollution; 3️⃣ Improving food security by reducing desertification and increasing crop yields for rice, maize, soy and wheat; 4️⃣ Limiting the negative effects of regional climate change on rainfall, especially in the Sahel region, and temperature in parts of Africa. 👉 Full report: https://buff.ly/4d5fdsG
