The 15 million women (and more than 4 million men) who belong to CARE Village Savings & Loan Associations (VSLAs) in 64 countries own and run their locally led groups. In Côte d'Ivoire, when several local groups realized the powerful potential of banding together, they formed the Amazone Women for Change. CARE provided training in VSLA methodology, advocacy, leadership, entrepreneurship, and financial inclusion – and helped connect them for national government recognition and partnership. Since March 2022, 49 Amazones have created nearly 2,000 groups with more than 45,000 members, providing trusted support and advice to women across the country on social issues as well as finance, and shifting the balance of power in households and communities. All it takes to unleash this kind of force is the ability and willingness to share knowledge, guidance, and connections to commercial and government networks. The Amazones plan to create 2,000 more groups by 2026. Worldwide each year, a million new members join CARE VSLAs and an estimated $1BN is saved. Global Solidarity Levies: A Game-Changer for Climate Finance? The Global Solidarity Levies Task Force, chaired by Kenya's President William Ruto, France's Emmanuel Macron and Barbados PM Mia Amor Mottley, is pioneering a crucial initiative to raise climate finance for developing nations on the frontlines of the climate crisis. "Solidarity levies" are a means of mobilizing climate finance for developing countries. Launched at COP28 with 13 member countries, the task force aims to present concrete proposals by early 2025, targeting solutions that could raise $100B+ annually.  The task force proposes: • A 0.1% global levy on stock/bond trades, which could raise $418B annually   • Shipping levies could generate $80B/year   • Fossil-fuel extraction levies could add $210B/year  While Africa contributes only 3% of historical emissions, it faces $15B in annual climate-related costs. These levies could bridge the gap between climate finance needs and availability, especially for vulnerable nations (and avoid punitive taxes for citizens). I say, MAKE POLLUTERS PAY. A wind of optimism has been blowing since June 19, 2024 on economic relations between Chad and the United States following the signing of a historic memorandum of understanding, marking a significant rapprochement for a major economic partnership. On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, the National Agency for Investments and Exports of Chad, represented by its Director General Mr. Khassim LOL MAHAMAT CHOUA, and the Black American Chamber of Commerce, under the leadership of its President, Mr. Charles DeBow, as well as the Investment Company Sterling Merchant Finance Ltd, represented by Mr. Roger B. Jantio, sealed their mutual commitment by formalizing this strategic partnership. This collaboration, which promises to open up new opportunities for investment in Chad, is the result of hard and tireless work led by H.E. Mrs. Kitoko Gata Ngoulou, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Chad to the United States. Since Friday, June 14, 2024, she has been accompanying a delegation of renowned investors from the United States, Canada, Turkey, Africa and China, testifying to the growing attractiveness of Chad on the international scene. The ambition clearly stated by Ambassador Gata Ngoulou is to boost the Chadian economy, in line with the strategic orientations of the President of the Republic of Chad. Investors, for their part, expressed their strong willingness to support Chad, in particular by accompanying the President's transformative vision for the country. #Women contribute 7 to 9% to Africa's GDP and represent over 40% of the labour force in #CentralAfrica (#ECCAS). Côte d'Ivoire is the world's leading cashew nut producer, and its annual production grew by 19% to 1,225,935 tons in 2023. Behind this success lies 500,000 producers, 20% of whom are women. The Wi-Agri integrated digital platform is a pioneering solution to empower women in the cashew value chain to optimize their operations and increase productivity and income, by offering virtual stock management, secure payments via mobile money, access to credit through a partnership with a microfinance institution, and access to an online market space for service providers, farmers, and buyers. The digital platform is complemented with on-the-ground support through the Digifemmes program.  By including access to mobile money into its platform, Wi-Agri is also contributing to closing the gender #financialinclusion gap in Cote d’Ivoire (27 percentage point difference between men's and women's ownership of mobile money in 2021!). CGAP is collaborating with IDH and Wi-Agri under the ABERA program, Accelerating Business to Empower Rural Women in Agriculture, to drive commercial innovation while advancing gender and climate goals. Unlocking Africa’s economic prospects will require, amongst others: ·      Structural change of its economies ·      Raising the productivity of agriculture ·      Providing enough electricity ·      Accelerating infrastructure investments ·      Supporting faster pace digitalisation ·      Unleashing economic and job opportunities for women and youth ·      Driving industrialisation through mobilisation of the private sector. According to African Development Bank President Group Dr Akinwumi Adesina Africa is important in the energy transition as the continent hosts large deposits of key minerals. The bank estimates that Africa’s natural capital stood at USD6.2-trillion in 2018, with mineral and fossil fuel resources alone valued at USD290-billion and USD1.05-trillion respectively. Adesina is a proponent of an independent African credit rating agency to counteract misperceptions that lead to underinvestment due to excessive risk premiums. Quoting the United Nations Development Program, Adesina said fairer credit ratings for African countries could save at least USD75-billion annually in debt service payments. The AfDB’s initiative, Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa (AFAWA), is de-risking financial institutions to lend to women. It is working with 169 financial institutions in 43 countries and has so far approved USD1.7-billion in financing for 18,300 women-led businesses. Their goal is to mobilise USD5-billion for women-led businesses. Expo Business For Peace in Beni (Eastern Congo DR, Friday, Sept 20th, 2024) To stimulate collaborative work with the private sector, the P-DEC program reinforces aspects of conflict sensitivity, gender inclusion principles (Do not harm & Do more Good). The private sector's main contribution to developing economies and societies stems from its core business, its ability to offer products and services that meet local demand, and the associated effects on job creation and economic growth. For example, since March 2024, P-DEC has been facilitating the interaction of 19 private sector companies with input suppliers, MFIs, consumers, employees, government and institutions to transfer know-how, promote peaceful conflict management tools and good governance through their core business. However, if they are to succeed, these businesses cannot carry on as if nothing had happened, because the environment in which we work remains more complex. In complex or fragile environments such as Beni and Mambasa, the operations and products facilitated by these companies must contribute to a virtuous rather than vicious circle of economic and societal development. Thus, P-DEC is convinced that by implementing conflict-sensitive approaches in strategies and operations with private sector actors, they can facilitate economic development while helping to create the essential conditions for peacebuilding in eastern DRC.

In our second meeting for the African Youth Statement consultation on Climate Mobility in Southern Africa, several key themes emerged : 👉 Botswana: Climate Change-Induced Migration In Botswana, climate change is increasingly driving people to leave their homes. Rising temperatures and erratic rainfall patterns are making traditional livelihoods such as agriculture and livestock rearing unsustainable. As grazing land becomes barren and water sources dry up, many rural communities are left with no choice but to move in search of better conditions. This migration is often internal, with people relocating to urban areas where resources are still accessible. However, this influx into cities puts additional strain on already limited infrastructure and social services, leading to overcrowding and further socio-economic challenges. 👉 Madagascar: Biodiversity Under Threat Madagascar, home to unique biodiversity, faces environmental degradation exacerbated by climate change. Droughts and cyclones are leading to land degradation, making agriculture increasingly difficult. This loss of livelihoods is pushing people to move. 👉 Mozambique: A Country Battling Cyclones and Pollution Mozambique’s recurring cyclones have left communities in constant recovery mode. Many displaced people are unable to return home as their villages are either destroyed or too unsafe. This situation has also heightened economic vulnerability, making it harder for people to rebuild their livelihoods. 👉 South Africa: Droughts Worsening Inequality and Migration South Africa has experienced prolonged droughts, particularly affecting rural areas where agriculture is key to survival. Water shortages have had wide-ranging impacts, from closing schools to halting economic activities in regions like Grahamstown. This has pushed people to migrate internally, seeking education and job opportunities in better-off areas.
