The office is mandated to: Regulate the processing of personal data, protecting the privacy of individuals; and providing data subjects with rights and remedies to protect their personal data from processing that is not in accordance with the Act.

The Deputy Data Commissioner Research and Strategy John Walubengo, CISA, CDPSE, (OGW). participated in the launch of the Kenya Redcross Data & digital transformation strategy which aims to harness the power of data and digital technologies to transform humanitarian action and deliver impactful , inclusive and sustainable services. In his closing remarks during the symposium on cyber security and data protection in humanitarian action, he emphasised the need to ensure safeguarding personal data and upholding the dignity of individuals by organization in the sector as they deploy new technologies to improve service delivery. ODPC participated in the syokimau Trade Expo and Conference 2024 where the Assistant Data Protection Commissioner _Complaints and Investigation Emmanuel Maiyo shared key insight on data protection with key highlights on complaints and investigation process, registration,enforcement measures and the critical role of data processors and data controllers. During a session on : How Digital Trust and Sustainability Power innovations in future' Maiyo emphasised key points on balancing data protection and innovation in the digital landscape; measures for protecting minors given increasing participation of minors in social media; Best practices of personal data where he encouraged individuals to be cautious about sharing personal information as they navigate various social media platforms.

Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassait, MBS earlier today spoke during the Symposium on Cybersecurity and Data Protection in Humanitarian Action organised by the Kenya Red Cross in partnership with Luxembourg Aid & Development, International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC and ODPC The conference was opened by Ministry of Information, Communications and The Digital Economy Secretary of ICT, Security and Audit Emmanuel Kata Kimeu on behalf of the Principal Secretary(PS) ICT and Digital Economy Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, MBS While acknowledging the fast-growing tech space and it's relevance for humanitarian action, she encouraged stakeholders in the sector to leverage new techniologies while upholding the rights and dignity of people affected by humanitarian emergencies as they deliver services. "From a data protection perspective these innovations raise significant data privacy issues which may result in the users’ reputation damage for data subjects like limited control over their personal data, unauthorized collection, use or disclosure, automated decision making through profiling and identity fraud through misuse of digital IDs," she said.

The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner in collaboration with the County Assemblies Forum (CAF) kicked off a three-day sensitization training session for public officers drawn from various counties. This is in line with the office mandate to spread awareness and enhancing the understanding of data protection across all sectors. Earlier, the Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassait, MBS hosted the CEO & Secretary to the Committee of the County Assemblies Forum Ms Lonah Losem, to discuss compliance concerns within Counties and other ways of collaboration to enhance compliance of data protection at devolved units. The Data Commissioner emphasised the need of compliance with the data protection laws which she said would enable the CAF to seamlessly perform their three core functions of law making, oversight and effective representation.

ODPC is glad to have joined the 2024 Kirdam Road Race- Kirdam Half Marathon themed Athletics Against Climate Change which took place in Baringo County. This is part of our Corporate Social Responsibility and commitment to support community led initiatives . Ahead of the marathon, our team also participated in a tree planting exercise in Kapsogo High school and its environs as part of the presidential directive to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.

The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) today held an awareness roadshow campaign in Kisii County, marking the sixth county in a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing understanding of data protection across the country. This follows similar programs held in Nyeri, Kajiado, Homa Bay, Garissa, and Baringo counties, with support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH The program included a dynamic mix of sensitization forums and roadshows aimed to raise awareness about data protection rights. Through these initiatives, the ODPC aims to empower individuals with insights into data privacy laws and the responsibilities of data controllers and processors.
