NAPTA on Wednesday this week, December11, in partnership with World Resources Institute Nairobi City County National Environment Management Authority - KE (NEMA) USAID held a Male Dialogue bringing together men from the public transport sector to dissect on the theme: The Role of Men in the public transport sector as champions against Air Pollution and Sexual and Gender-based Violence. The participants were drawn from Matatu Saccos within Nairobi, Kenya Boda Boda Association leaders, Matatu Workers Union and PSV Business Membership Corporation of Kenya. The Dialogue brought to fore the urgent need to tackle air pollution and stand up against Sexual and gender-based violence. One thing stood out that Sexual and gender-based violence affects both men and women but women are affected the most. The impact of Air pollution disproportionately affects women as compared to men due to the biological make-up of women. As a result, some of the Sexual and gender-based violence cases are closely linked to air pollution which transport contributes significantly. Women who suffer still births and miscarriage as a result of air pollution are often subjected to gender-based violence due to lack of understanding and awareness around air pollution and its impact. We look forward to continue working closely to champion clean air and a sexual and gender-based violence free public transport sector. ##jamiibiladhuluma #heforshedialogue #hewasafi #16DaysOfActivismAgainstGenderBasedViolence

Reflecting on the Inaugural Nairobi Metropolitan Area Matatu Summit: A Journey of Dedication and Collaboration After months of planning, rescheduling twice, and countless sleepless nights, we successfully held the inaugural Nairobi Metropolitan Area Matatu Summit, in partnership with the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Nairobi. Organizing such an event is no small feat. It’s a journey filled with stress, early mornings, late nights, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring every detail falls into place. Our team at Napta put their heart and soul into making this summit a success, and I am incredibly proud of their efforts. We spent weeks carefully selecting the right theme, speakers, and participants, all while navigating the challenges of securing resources. The summit’s theme—"Building the Capacity of Public Transport Providers to Access Affordable Financing for Sustainable Public Transport in Nairobi"—was shaped by deep research and direct feedback from transport operators and workers. The issue of affordable financing is critical. It’s the biggest challenge facing public transport providers in Nairobi, and across Kenya. Existing financial models are unsustainable, with exorbitant interest rates that make it nearly impossible for operators to service loans on time. As a result, many face vehicle repossession, adding to the instability of the sector. Financing is the key to ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable public transportation in Kenya. Our operators deserve access to financing that empowers them to provide quality services for Nairobi's commuters. Our collaboration with the Institute for Development Studies at the University of Nairobi was a key milestone in ensuring the summit’s success. The research and knowledge shared by the esteemed IDS team were invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for the unwavering support of Prof. Winnie Mitullah, Prof. Paul Kamau, Dr. Anne Kamau, and Ms. Paschalin Basil. Together, we have taken a significant step toward improving public transportation in Kenya. We look forward to building on this momentum and driving the sector toward a brighter, more sustainable future. Early last week, on 5th & 6th November 2024, we participated in a stakeholders' workshop to develop a communication and advocacy strategy under the Breathe Cities Initiative for Nairobi. We mapped out key stakeholders and vulnerable population affected by air pollution and laid out a strategy on how to engage them in our communication and advocacy even as we aim to raise awareness on the impact of air pollution on vulnerable communities in Nairobi. Public transport is the largest polluter contributing over 60% of air pollution in Nairobi. We hope to help reduce air pollution from the public transport by 30% by the year 2030.

We happy to announce that we have been selected to take part in the Breathe Cities Initiative under the Breathe Nairobi Initiative. We shall support the work of the initiative by engaging the public transport sector in Nairobi to create awareness on the negative impact of air pollution to Nairobians and help key stakeholders in the sector adopt strategies to reduce air pollution by at least 30% by the year 2030 Breathe Cities Initiative is a project by Clean Air Fund, C40 Cities, and Bloomberg Philanthropies, aimed at improving air quality, reducing carbon emissions, and boosting public health. The project will help Nairobi City strengthen air quality data, community engagement, policy development, technical capacity and sharing knowledge with other cities under the Initiative. We look forward to collaborating with every stakeholder under the Breathe Nairobi Initiative to improve air quality by creating awareness, behavioral change and enactment and enforcement of air quality policies in Nairobi.
