Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This year’s theme is a sobering call: “Every 11 minutes, a woman is killed.” There is simply #NoExcuse. Gender-based violence remains a grave human rights violation affecting women and girls worldwide. Since 1996, the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women has supported 670 life-saving initiatives across 140 countries, yet the work is far from done. We need urgent action and unwavering commitment. It’s time to: 1. Renew commitment from activists, donors, and decision-makers. 2. Demand accountability and real action from stakeholders. 3. Prioritize resources for women’s rights organizations making a difference. Let’s UNiTE to end this epidemic of violence. Together, we must say: There is #NoExcuse for femicide. Rather than relying on clans, the Maasai divide their community into age groups that men join throughout their lives. Here’s an overview of how this system works: 1. Age Sets and Life Stages: The age-set system groups men born within a specific period (usually around 15 years) into cohorts that progress through various life stages together. These stages include childhood, warriorhood, elderhood, and senior elderhood. Each phase carries its own responsibilities, roles, and rites of passage, reinforcing the unity and collective identity of the Maasai community. 2. Warriorhood (Moran): The transition from boyhood to warriorhood involves extensive ceremonies and rituals, including circumcision, which mark the initiation into manhood. Young men become morans (warriors) and are responsible for defending the community, herding cattle, and performing ceremonial duties. During this period, the morans live together in special villages and are known for their distinctive attire, hairstyles, and cultural practices. 3. Elderhood: Once the warrior phase is complete, the age set transitions to elderhood, where men take on more administrative and leadership responsibilities. Elders make important decisions regarding community welfare, resolve conflicts, and oversee the performance of cultural rites and rituals. Elders are deeply respected for their wisdom and authority. 4. Senior Elders and Advisors: The oldest members of the age-set become senior elders, advising the community and overseeing the well-being of the Maasai people. They are considered the guardians of Maasai culture and heritage. This cultural practice emphasizes discipline, bravery, unity, and communal responsibility among the Maasai. The system is not static and has adapted over time to modern influences while maintaining its core values and functions.
