The 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀𝟮𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 (𝗟𝟮𝗩) Project is a DCA initiative implemented by the Nakuru Office. As explained by project coordinator John Riungu, the project operates in Nakuru and Nyandarua counties, aiming to reduce food loss and waste (FLW) in alignment with Kenyan government priorities and the global Sustainable Development Goal (#SDG) Target 12.3. This is achieved through scalable cold storage solutions. 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙀𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙊𝙪𝙩𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨: 𝟭. Our Responsible Business Conduct and Business and Human Rights specialist Joanne Kirimi-Gikonyo shares some insights from the concluded UN Business and Human Right Forum
🌟 What a whirlwind of a week! 🌟 Last week, I had the privilege of being part of the Folkekirkens Nødhjælp (DanChurchAid) delegation at the UN Business and Human Rights Forum. It was a remarkable experience to engage with inspiring professionals and practitioners tackling critical themes in the business and human rights space. 🗝️ Key Themes Discussed: - Meaningful stakeholder engagement - Impact of the EU CSDDD, especially on smallholder farmers and SMEs - Access to remedy for rightsholders - Labour and migrant workers' rights - Sector-specific approaches to due diligence under the smart mix framework 💡 My Key Takeaways: 1️⃣ The EU CSDDD's impact on smallholder farmers and SMEs stood out to me. It’s essential to avoid burdening these groups with compliance costs and instead focus on fostering inclusive value chains through support and collaboration. 2️⃣ Success stories were incredibly motivating: Women On Farms Project (South Africa): This snapshot session addressed rightsholders’ representation in food supply chains through meaningful engagement and consultation. They gave an example of how they had supported a rightsholder to purchase a share in a company so as to have a voice in the company's decision-making processes and for some reason, it felt like a eureka moment! JaCER (Japan) & IndustriALL Global Union : It was great to hear from organizations that are using e.g., internal membership structures and binding agreements to ensure private sector accountability and access to remedy for rightsholders. Better Cotton Initiative & ECLT Foundation: Also a snapshot session, this session provided innovative strategies to address child labour in value chains. 3️⃣Bridging Global and Regional Voices: A key reflection is the need to better connect global discussions to regional forums and amplify the voices of the Global South. These perspectives are vital to shaping inclusive, context-sensitive solutions that reflect diverse realities and challenges. I am glad I got to attend Mercy Obonyo, Joseph Kibugu and Joseph Byomuhangyi 's sessions where they brought in such perspectives with such great detail and context. We definitely need more of these. 4️⃣ Personal Inspiration: Attending sessions on development finance and banking’s interface with human rights gave me renewed motivation to complete my thesis 😊Florence Shako and Caroline Lichuma you can hold me accountable. A standout recommendation for the financial services sector: build due diligence processes that are continuous, transparent, and accountable. 💬 Let’s continue pushing for inclusive, impactful, and sustainable solutions in the business and human rights field. A special nod to the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights for organizing and coordinating the Forum and to Folkekirkens Nødhjælp (DanChurchAid) and DanChurchAid Kenya for the ongoing work in responsible business conduct especially in food systems! 🌍✨

DanChurchAid Kenya reposted this
With the conclusion of the 13th UN Forum on Business and Human Rights, DanChurchAid look forward to continuing the push for responsible business conduct to be realised through the ‘smart mix’ of measures together with civil society and private sector partners! As trade and investments are increasingly being prioritised within the sphere of sustainable development and international partnerships, the need to ensure that rights holders are meaningfully engaged and remedied in cases of abuses is stronger than ever. Realising this, ACT Alliance members and partners met to discuss how we can strengthen the role of civil society in ensuring a just transition for all. The group represented perspectives from Latin America, Africa and South Asia to shed light on how to combat cases of unjust transition through constructive engagement with faith actors and the private sector. During the forum, DCA was further happy to share the recommendations from our newly launched report “The Business Case of Food Systems Change”, which highlights key incentive structures of food systems transformation through responsible business conduct. DCA was pleased to take part in the forum alongside Uganda Consortium for Corporate Accountability and Centre for Education Policy and Climate Justice (CEPCJ), who provided the contextual perspectives we need to progress and meaningfully implement international guidelines and new EU human and environmental rights due diligence legislation. #Bizhumanrights #UNGPs #UNBHRForum #foodsystemschange #agroecology #CSDDD #EUDR #justtransition #RBC #BHR Joseph Byomuhangyi Florence Shako Mutuso Dhliwayo Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association ZELA Victoria de Mello Ononuju Silver Okwaraogoma Damilola S. Elijah Korir from Nandi County had long relied on maize as his primary crop. Each year, he depended heavily on the rains to grow maize. After harvesting in August, his family would endure food shortages until the next planting season in January. Through a partnership with ADS North Rift, DCA implemented the Food Security and Climate Change Adaptation (FOSECCA) project to address these challenges. FOSECCA aims to reduce the vulnerability of target counties to climate change impacts by promoting agroforestry practices and rehabilitating degraded areas. The project also focuses on enhancing the community's adaptive capacity to climate shocks such as droughts and floods while ensuring water availability, food security, and improved nutrition. These efforts align with the 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 (𝗡𝗖𝗖𝗔𝗣) 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟴–𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮, which emphasizes climate adaptation and mitigation actions. With this Initiative, Elijah can now harvest a variety of crops throughout the year by adopting improved irrigation methods and learning which crops thrive best under specific climatic conditions Denmark in Kenya ADS Northrift #ClimateAction #FoodSecurity #SustainableFarming #SmartFarming #ClimateChangeAdaptation #ResilientCommunities #SustainableAgriculture #NutritionSecurity #DroughtResilience #FloodResilience #WaterManagement #NCCAP #ClimateSolutions #FarmingInnovation
