Driverless cybercabs, futuristic vans, and the star of the show — 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝘂𝘀 the humanoid robot! 🤖 🕺It danced, served drinks, and joked with the crowd like a pro. The vision of robots taking over the tough, tedious tasks feels closer than ever. The future has never looked more effortless! ✨ But here’s the thing — while we marvel at these incredible shows, there’s an aspect of the story that wasn’t told: how are these robots powered?⚡ It’s a bit like Hollywood movie characters🎬— you never see them taking a break to the bathroom… Sure, the demos are impressive, but they skip over a key issue: 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.🪫Behind the scenes, scaling robots for continuous, real-world use hinges on solving this 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 challenge—𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘀' 𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀. 🔋 So the question is: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝟮-𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆? Grateful to TIME for publishing a new piece from Xavier de Souza Briggs Mark Muro and me re: #GenAI's impact on work and workers. In the piece, we call out the surprising silence of both presidential campaigns on a key issue where America's workers have a great deal at stake. We draw on our new The Brookings Institution report that analyzes OpenAI data and finds that already, existing ChatGPT4 technology could have a disruptive impact on workers. Overall, we find that some 30% of the workforce could see at least half of their work tasks impacted by today’s GenAI -- and much more powerful models are likely to arrive soon. Yet technology is not destiny. AI capabilities alone will not determine the future of work. Workers, rather, can shape the trajectory of AI’s impact on work—but only if they have a voice in the technology’s design and deployment. Here, we raise the alarm. Our report highlights what we call the “Great Mismatch,” the reality that the jobs *most* likely to see disruptions from AI are also the *least* likely to employ workers who belong to a union or have other forms of voice and representation. AI is one of the great challenges of our time, posing both risks and opportunities for the American worker. The next president will take office at a time when AI is moving incredibly fast -- far faster than our collective response, so far, to understand and shape it. He or she will need to help determine the policies, investments, guardrails and social protections—or lack of same—that will shape the future of work for millions of Americans.
