For founders, it's important to understand the different stages in a startup's lifecycle This video, posted by Bessemer Venture Partners covered some important points, but I wanted to riff off a topic I’ve been thinking a lot about. Particularly sharing a model which is popular at Harvard Business School, (which gives a 50,000-foot view of this lifecycle), and is known as the Diamond Square Model The Diamond is a four-component framework that provides a comprehensive overview of a startup's progression. These components include the Customer Value Proposition, Go-To-Market Strategy, Technology and Operations (TNO), and the Profit Formula: 1.) Customer Value Proposition - This is the first stage, where you define and refine the value you're providing to your customers. What solution are you offering? What makes your product or service unique? This stage is typically refined by the seed stage 2.) Go-To-Market Strategy - Once you've defined your value proposition, the next step is to determine how you'll deliver your product or service to the market. This stage usually begins at the seed stage, where you're trying to gain traction and look to achieve product-market fit 3.) Technology and Operations (TNO) - As you start to gain traction, you'll need to focus on the technology and operations that will allow you to scale your business. This stage often aligns with the Series A funding round 4.) Profit Formula - The final component of the Diamond Square Model is the Profit Formula. This is where you'll start to focus on revenue generation and monetization. This stage typically aligns with Series B or Series C funding rounds That being said, not all processes are alike… and some might follow a different path, but by and large these are the main stages, and the progress one can expect. The progression through these stages is not only tied to the development of your business model but also to the type of investors and funding rounds you'll encounter In the pre-seed stage, you're likely to be funded by family, friends, angel investors, or specific VCs that specialize in pre-seed investments. As you move into the seed stage, you'll start to attract larger angel investors and VCs that specialize in seed rounds. 🙌 Welcome back to Startup Wednesdays, featuring #VC, #founder & #operators here in South-East Asia. For this week, we have Pat Naranpat Thitipattakul, Investment Director at ORZON Ventures 💭 What does Orzon Ventures focus on? The idea is to combine the flexibility and decision-making expertise of a traditional VC with the extensive resources and ecosystem of a large corporate entity like OR. This approach aims to help startups grow by leveraging OR's existing customer base, infrastructure, and market presence. Orzon Ventures focuses on investing in startups particularly in sectors like mobility, lifestyle and food and beverage. The goal is to find innovative solutions that can benefit from OR's resources and customer network, ultimately fostering startup growth and corporate synergy. 💭 What motivated you to join 500 ? Unlike many who are determined to become venture capitalists,I initially applied for a position to manage an accelerator program at Disrupt, which was run by one of the GPs of 500 TukTuks. My interest in startups was piqued when a friend invited me to participate in a hackathon, which turned out to be an exhilarating experience. The fast-paced environment & the opportunity to connect with innovative founders inspired me to apply for the accelerator manager position. During the interview process, the CEO offered me a dual role: managing the accelerator program & joining the venture capital team. Despite my initial unfamiliarity with venture capital, I accepted the challenge. This dual role allowed me to witness the entire journey of startups, from their inception at hackathons to becoming fully-fledged companies. 💭 What are the biggest challenges for Thai startups? The Thai market faces significant funding challenges, with limited early-stage VC funds & a reliance on CVCs that invest mainly in Series A and beyond, creating a funding gap for earlier stages. Investors in Thailand are risk-averse & while there are fragmented angel investors, their limited capital makes funding difficult. This forces many Thai startup founders to reach profitability quickly or bootstrap, which can lead to better investment terms but is challenging. Additionally, foreign investors show interest but often lack confidence due to difficulties understanding the local ecosystem. 💭 What has been the biggest challenge as a VC in Thailand? For Orzon, the biggest challenge has been finding startups that synergize well with OR's existing operations. These services have always been expensive. VCs have subsidized the cost to drive growth. (Thank You, VCs!) I believe there is a very important bet for two of these services that haven't paid off (yet). Autonomous Cars. What is driving the high costs of two of these businesses? Wages. Remove the driver, and the costs drop substantially. They haven't been able to do that (yet). So, prices must reflect the cost of driving a hamburger 40 minutes across NYC. (It's not $5). #ProjectForABillion Today, in our regular column, I want to talk about the Cariloop project, which raised $20 million in a Series C round this spring. The lead investor was ABS Capital, which is also known for its investments in PowerReviews (recently exited) and LabConnect. But let's get back to the project in the Mental Health category. By the way, if psychologists ever asked me how to get rich and build a capitalized business, I would recommend working in their specialty and creating projects for corporations in the psychological and mental health category. In 2023, $435.2 billion was directed to this industry (this includes all project investments, not just venture capital). While there are still some managers in Russia (and elsewhere) who don't believe that a depressed employee who sleeps poorly, is torn between caring for children, and walks on the parapet at night is unlikely to create high results and a sustainable team, managers of almost all large corporations around the world are paying just as much attention to mental health as to physical health. Maybe these naive people are indeed investing half a trillion dollars so that employees can more efficiently scold their parents and school teachers? I've heard that silly version too. Cariloop is a platform where each employee is assigned a Care Coach with whom they can share or, in light cases, delegate the search for solutions to problems (although the platform indicates various types of problems, medical issues are most often mentioned in examples) not only for the user but also for their family members: children or even parents. A Care Coach can help navigate the healthcare system, provide educational support (about diseases, care methods), emotional support, and, if needed, legal or financial assistance. Special emphasis is placed on the fact that health coaches interact with each other and exchange information (how they do this without violating confidentiality, I will clarify later). I will not dwell in detail on the business efficiency claimed by the startup. It is clear that there are very beautiful infographics and analytics on the website about how much employee efficiency and, consequently, business efficiency improve when interacting with such a service solution. Check it if you want. I am skeptical about trying to measure the impact of employees' psychological health on business in numbers. However, evaluating the results of a business managed by psychologically unhealthy employees in numbers is much easier. We can start from there. *This is not an investment recommendation. **This is not a project the author has invested in (yep, it's required now). ***This is not a project I've been studying in detail for 10 years; it's just my subjective assessment of one of the most interesting projects that raised a round in the reporting period.

VC can learn from PE and vice-versa. Is there a best of both worlds? Could they be the yin to each other’s yang? Imagine a conference with partners from both VCs and PE firms. 🤔 What would they be talking about?  🤔 What would they be learning from each other?  🤔 What topics would be alien to each other?  🤔 What blind spots will be revealed? Both are very important sectors to the UK and the global economy and we will all benefit if they evolve and raise their game. A "Roll-up" is when a private equity firm acquires several similar companies and combines them into one. It normally starts with the "platform" company, and then smaller "add-ons" are acquired thereafter. The "platform" and the "add-ons" are combined into a single company. That's the "roll-up." 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗮 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗹-𝘂𝗽? Using date-based triggers, each company is brought into a consolidated Three Statement Model after the respective deal closes. This enables us to calculate two primary things: 1) Pro forma EBITDA 2) Estimated Cash going forward 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 Roll-up models are some of the most complicated models I've built.
