Question for the communications pros out there: Do you think the job market is finally improving? The past 24 months have been 𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘢𝘭 for comms professionals, and now I’m hearing mixed signals about where things stand. Here’s the general vibe I’m getting: 🙂 More roles are popping up for specific comms roles, especially internal comms and analyst relations. 🫠 PR, social media, and content are still facing cuts across the board (and the open roles are few and far between). 🫠  Senior-level comms positions are seriously scarce or non-existent. Good read from Andy Kessler on the importance of supporting basic research for innovation: "It’s easy to fall off or be pushed off the leading edge. Faster productivity doesn’t just happen. Government shouldn’t pick winners and losers. Instead, productivity takes tireless scientists and engineers to experiment constantly with tiny improvements until the rest of us see what feels like huge gains in what we can do... Basic research of all types should be encouraged. Let many ideas flourish as industrial policy doesn’t work. Instead, success is like throwing spaghetti against the wall, seeing what sticks. DO and DON'T tips for conference attendees: DON'T look at your phone, email or smartwatch. Instead, DO speak to the person seated or standing nearby. Ask them what they learned from the speaker. Find out how will they share that insight with their colleague or client. Compare notes and discuss your view and your plan to spread the word. You're at the conference to CONNECt with others: attendees, speakers, even vendors. Looking at your phone, email and smartwarch messages will take you out of the room. ML’s Monday Morning Musings – 3.5 Reflections from 3.5 Days with IABC Comms Pros “Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” -- Henry Ford Thanks, Henry. Even with 30 years of experience in internal and change communications at global companies, I’m not too old to learn. Last week, I spent 3.5 days with top professionals in the communications field at the IABC World Conference in Chicago. Nearly every speaker told a story of a situation they overcame that I could relate to and learn from. While there were many takeaways, a few reflections stood out for me. If you want more, follow IABC, and attend next year! 💓 1.    Let Your Heart Lead Oscar Munoz, former CEO of United Airlines, told the story of his first 37 days there, which he spent talking with employees in every part of United’s operations. His first priority was to regain their trust. Under pressure, and after suffering a near-death heart attack, drawing inspiration from his grandmother (who raised him as a boy and served as his role model), he led United with heart through one of the most successful turnarounds in modern business. Check out his book, “Turnaround Time.” 😩 2.    Avoid Burnout Carolon Donnally PCC,MSOD, spoke of living with habitual burnout, an experience which took her two and half years to overcome. She reminded me of times in my career when I experienced burnout and shared strategies to avoid it, like having self-compassion and remembering to BARK: B-oundaries (set them) A-dditional identities (you are not only your job) R-est and relationships (see item #3) K-nowing and addressing burnout stressors 🤝 3.    Build & Nurture Relationships I met and reconnected with professionals who, like me, want to keep getting better at what they do, like Steve Crescenzo and Cindy Crescenzo. I first met Steve at an IABC conference where he gave a keynote on making corporate communications simpler. I later hired them. More than once. A former Bayer colleague, Alexandra Borchard (She/Her), and I joined the Crescenzos for dinner because that’s one way to nurture relationships. We had a blast, and I’m working with them on another project. You get out of relationships what you put into them. 🧐 3.5   Have Sponge-Like Curiosity. Be open-minded to new ways of thinking, approaches, perspectives, and technologies. AI and how to leverage this fascinating technology to augment your communications work had its own track. Vulnerability. How does it work when you’re at work? Without sharing, no one can really know you. But how do you know when it’s ok to share? I’ve seen it in action. Going back to DC, my boss at the time created a space with trust and respect where I could be vulnerable. And at some point, I opened up. It completely changed how we communicated and worked together. From that, I learned the importance of trust. Starting a new job, it’s challenging to know who to trust and what to share. But when you find the moment where you feel open, take it. Because it’s those moments that will transform your relationships and how you work together. Everything in life is built on trust. But the first person to always trust is yourself. #LeadershipLessons #LifeAtNCRVoyix

When you use email to invite more than four attendees to a meeting, use bcc to avoid the dreaded "Reply all" that inevitably bombards all the participants. Instead, include the list of invitees at the bottom of the message, so everyone knows who else willl be there. #email #bestpractices

#communications tip: three bullet points of 60 words or less delivered in 90 seconds or less. Simplify. We all can be better at this.

A must read for many out there. My mantra is often to use a Press release when you have exhausted all other options, particularly if there is “no news” in the release. It continues to amaze me how PR and Marketing teams continue to take the easy path that a PR is one and done, ✔️ without measurement or. 360 engagement. We can all do better…including training our stakeholders to understand what drives true impact.

Communications should not just be a pass-through. Having a critical eye and connecting dots is essential to success. (Yes, I realize this was initially posted as a joke.) When information is posted without any thought to serving the audience or solving the issue at hand, it makes the Comms team appear less effective and less strategic. If we're not making a difference, it's easier to put Comms on the chopping block when Budget Crunch Time arrives. Rather than be a pass-through, ask these questions to upgrade content before broadcasting it: 1️⃣ Does this make sense to me, and do I understand it? If not, others likely won't either. 2️⃣ Will someone who's not as involved in company initiatives understand this? Communicators are usually in the thick of things, so we have more background than others, and we need to filter that out. 3️⃣ Does this content connect the effort to the company's strategy or goals? If not, draw that line more explicitly. 4️⃣ Is the information being communicated clearly? Are there any ways we can tweak it to make the message(s) more effective? (Shout out to Leon as pictured above.) 5️⃣ Are we sending different messages about the same thing from different stakeholders? Can we combine and link the stakeholders to help streamline and align things?

You know you're a communications professional if: . . . 🤜 You consider "stakeholder alignment" a form of extreme sport. 🤜 You have strong feelings about em dashes—and Oxford commas. 🤜 You've contemplated making "Track Changes" your middle name. 🤜 You've ever had to explain that "make it pop" isn't actionable feedback. 🤜 You know AP guidelines front to back, but can’t remember your own birthday. 🤜 You’re somehow still the last person asked for input for the “high priority" project you’re leading. 🤜 You’ve spent 20 minutes deciding between “Hi” and “Hello” because tone matters. 🤜 You have a carefully curated folder of “proof that I already told you this” screenshots. 🤜 You know that "final_final_FINAL_v3_APPROVED_really_final.doc" is never actually final. 🤜 You’ve rewritten the same announcement so many times that you’re no longer sure what words mean. . . . Today's #MetricMonday is all about my LEAST favorite metric: impressions. Don't get me wrong, impressions are foundational to most #communications work, because what is a message worth if it's not seen or heard? But we've asked impressions to do far too much in measuring success. In truth, impressions simply indicate how many eyes were exposed to a message. A nice volume indicator, however, impressions don't tell us: 👉 If the audience paid attention to the message. 👉 How the audience received the message. 👉 If the message drove the intended call-to-action among the audience. Other data can answer those questions, which is why I always pair impression totals with other metrics in my analysis. Impressions are a great baseline metric, but you'll always need a qualifier to make it matter. SIDENOTE: Way back in my traditional PR days we'd use a multiplier to indicate how impressions in print would scale to real-world exposure. Because apparently if someone read a newspaper, they'd inevitably pass it to two other people to read the EXACT same clip. It was around that time that my distrust for impression totals began. Is that still a thing? I hope not.
