Enjoyed participating in a discussion on mobilizing investment to deliver a net-zero economy at the #JapanEnergySummit. The biggest barrier constricting VC capital flow is the potential for"death-by-pilot" where start-ups fail to secure the necessary funding required to support multiple iteration and scale-up phases often with moving goalposts from customers and partners. Contrary to popular belief, it is often commercial inertia that extends these timelines, not fundamental technology issues. While commercial partners need to manage risk, start-ups need to find partners where the highest levels of management see the vision for future alignment and are not just tinkering. And start-ups need to be able to give confidence to investors by striking early commercial deals with these partners that are subject to performance milestones and show real skin in the game.

Space tech-focused investment firm Seraphim Space Space launched its second VC fund, SSV II, to back early-stage startups in the global space tech market. The fund aims to build a portfolio of 30 startups, investing in seed and Series A stages. The latest fund's target size is larger than its predecessor's, which closed at £70M ($90M) in 2017. The fund's investment themes include AI applications for space data, in-orbit computing, space-enabled communications, and microgravity for science. Eutelsat is one of the limited partners that contributed to the latest fund. Seraphim Space aims to stand out with its track record, having returned three times the original investment from its first fund. The first fund's returns were driven by five exits, including Siemens' acquisition of UltraSOC and four IPOs of Arqit, AST SpaceMobile, Nightingale, and Spire Global. The British firm listed its growth fund Seraphim Space Investment Trust (SSIT) on the London Stock Exchange in July 2021, getting about £250M (~$300M) in gross proceeds. The fund's market cap touched an all-time low of £130M ($162M) in July 2023. The market for space tech is expected to grow significantly, with the World Economic Forum and McKinsey estimating it could be worth $1.8R by 2035.

The last few days I've been attending SynBioBeta conference in San Jose, CA. Really cool innovations that are tackling big problems in health, industrial production, and climate. It was also AgFunder's AGM... some non-standard observations: 1- Venture markets are not back: it will not be a bounce, but a slow recovery 2- Smart startups are partnering with engineering/EPC firms earlier in their life. This is key to de-risk scale production from day 1. My first employer out of college Black & Veatch was a key partner in the growth of Tesla, and now they're active in the bio space 3- If you say you're AI, you better prove it. Nothing wrong with saying you're doing ML

Med Tech in Focus:   Wearable Ultrasound Patch Offers Continuous Cerebral Blood Flow Monitoring Researchers at University of California San Diago have developed a postage-stamp sized ultrasound patch that can continuously monitor three-dimensional cerebral blood flow in real time. The technology is worn on the temple and is composed of silicon embedded with several layers of soft, stretchy electronics that produce and enhance ultrasound signals. Currently, a technician uses a Doppler ultrasound device on a patient’s head at specific times each day to monitor blood flow. That procedure has limits because such measurements can vary depending on the accuracy of the technician and data can fluctuate between readings.  The device is connected by cables to a computer and uses ultra-fast imaging and AI to collect and post-process data about the brain’s blood vessels. Patients who are undergoing and recovering from brain surgery could benefit from the device and it’s hoped that the continuous monitoring could tell if a patient is about to experience a stroke and provide an opportunity for timely intervention.
