A warning from China's flagship semiconductor company - SMIC today reported its net income plunged 68.9% from a year earlier to $71.79 million as a result of intense competition. Meanwhile, its gross margin fell to 13.7% in the quarter – the lowest the firm has ever recorded since nearly 12 years. “Competition in the industry has been increasingly fierce and the pricing for commodity products basically follows the market trends” SMIC is China’s biggest contract chip manufacturer and is viewed as an industry leader in Beijing's quest to become self-reliant in the semiconductor industry. Its revenue for Q1 was $1.75 billion, up 19.7% from a year earlier, as customers stocked up on chips. More than 80% of its revenue in the first quarter came from customers in China. Related, I suggested nearly six months ago that the State Council and the Big Fund were seeking to correct the over saturation situation in the domestic IC industry and to effectively refine the efficiency of the government's subsidy program. Separately, the U.S. Dept of Commerce yesterday added China's CETC Chip Technology to its Entity List. Asahi Shimbun reports fraud by #Megumi Corporation based in #Minato #Tokyo, resulting in 400 million yen. The company offers services for the disabled and elderly. It was skimming, pocketing from over-charged food costs and welfare service charges. At the same time, the company cut-back on food to its patients. One employee asserted, she was instructed not to offer "extra food" and witnessed patients lose weight over time. A few patients were also incorrectly administered psychiatric medication, when reacting to actual starvation. If there is a candidate for Chinese companies to break the value trap - that would be SMIC. Think about it - it has almost the whole of China to itself, and the demand is growing. And it CAN sell chips lower priced then its competitors to other markets (except that China is taking almost all the production for even the low end chips) Will SMIC figure out how to make 3nm chips? Yes. Even 1.5nm? Yup. As efficiently as TSMC? No way, not so soon. I mean China can lower land costs, power costs, labour costs - but these are not as simple as the efficiency that Samsung and TSMC enjoy from their ecosystem of suppliers and the suppliers' ecosystem. "“Even if SMIC can produce chips using 5nm technology, the cost would be at least 10 times higher than those produced at TSMC without EUV machines,” Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Charles Shum said. “The technology gap isn’t just about reaching a certain level, it’s also about how effectively you can achieve it. ” Like I said you can design a 10hp engine, or you could tie up 12 horses to do the same job. At some point, 450bhp for example, getting 500 horses or more becomes unfeasible. So for SMIC to succeed, it needs capable suppliers that can match 80% of the efficiency and 100% of the TSMC's at the current generation +1. It should be able to do so but not this year, or next. In short, TSMC is like a megabank. It can produce exotic products at scale. SMIC is like a national bank with a bespoke finance arm - it can produce mass products at scale, but exotic products now and then - but by the time they scale, the TSMCs of the world has moved on. This is bad, but only if you do not realise that there are only a few nations in this game, and China is running 3rd or 4th. And everyone behind China is way way back. But as Chartered Semicon found out - there are no prizes for coming in 3rd at the front end.

Three points to watch in the afternoon session: Semiconductor stocks rise to new intraday record highs Semiconductor stocks rose to new intraday record highs in the afternoon session on July 9th. The Nikkei average rebounded sharply, closing at 41,386.80 yen, supported by the rise in high-priced semiconductor stocks. Tokyo Electron was the top contributor to the rise, followed by Fast Retailing. The US stock market was mixed, with the Nasdaq reaching a record high for the fifth consecutive day. Semiconductor-related stocks in Japan, such as Resonac HD, Tokyo Electron, and SoftBank Group, also rose. The dollar-yen rate was firm as Japanese stocks strengthened, with speculators accumulating risk-on yen selling. I believe that computers and smartphones will be equipped with "edge AI" in the future. Currently, the semiconductor industry is dominated by GPUs, as represented by NVIDIA. However, Intel is looking for ways to run edge AI on CPUs. (In that sense, I think Intel's stock price will go up in the future. :p) I believe Apple's M4 chip will make that possible, and I have a feeling Apple's next generation version of SIRI will be what we can call generative AI.
