[Interview] NetApp CTO “50% Success Rate in AI Adoption in Financial Sector... Data Management is the Solution” Steve Rackham, CTO of NetApp, underscored Korea's recent relaxation of financial sector network separation regulations as a pivotal step for fostering AI and cloud innovations in finance. He noted that while 90% of financial firms aim to adopt AI, only 50% have succeeded, with 68% of data going underutilized. Effective data utilization is vital for AI adoption. The sector employs AI for trading, fraud detection, and money laundering prevention. With advancements in generative AI, there's potential for enhanced customer service, such as Bloomberg News's development of its own GPT. Rackham identified two strategies for AI implementation: boosting revenue via improved customer interaction and reducing costs through operational efficiencies. Data management remains a significant barrier, with a mere 66% of customers trusting financial institutions in data handling. Rackham emphasized the importance of data governance amid rising regulations like the EU AI bill, advocating for structured data access and protection strategies. NetApp's BlueXP solution aims to classify and safeguard sensitive data, promoting better understanding and utilization of information. To enhance AI adoption, Rackham suggested starting with sandbox testing in cloud environments before transitioning to on-premise solutions. He highlighted NetApp's Ontap for managing data across cloud and on-premise systems, providing flexibility for financial institutions. Additionally, he called for sustainable data management strategies to prepare for a projected global data increase to 1 yottabyte by 2030, noting that efficient data management could reduce operational costs significantly.
