Ltd. thereafter. "We're proud to partner with MOL in Wind Challenger's industry-first LNG installation," said Barbara Pickering, President of Chevron Shipping Company. "This is another example of using novel approaches in hard-to-abate sectors to reduce carbon intensity in our LNG fleet." Takeshi Hashimoto, President and CEO of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines., said, "With the understanding and cooperation of Chevron, we are delighted to be able to extend the Wind Challenger Project to LNG carriers in addition to the two delivered Wind Challenger-equipped bulkers and other ongoing projects. Achieving GHG reduction in the maritime transport of LNG, which is increasingly in demand worldwide as a transition fuel, is a very important mission for us. • 【Building Logistics Center on Kobe’s Port Island!】 We decided to construct a logistics center, including two warehouses for dangerous goods and one warehouse for general cargo, on a site it owns on Port Island in the Port of Kobe! The MOL Group's management plan "BLUE ACTION 2035" positions the transformation of the group's business portfolio to ensure profitability even during shipping recessions as a major growth strategy by increasing the weight of non-shipping, stable-profit businesses that offset the volatility of the shipping market. Investment in logistics in the real property business is part of this initiative. Another strategic move aimed at fueling new growth, the group is strengthening its initiatives in total logistics for chemical products. The new center will be operated by MOL Group company Japan Express Co., Ltd., which has an import/export cargo freight business based at the Port of Kobe and an especially strong presence in the import/export cargo freight service of dangerous cargo. This will allow MOL to add two new dangerous goods warehouses on Port Island by the spring of 2026, in addition to the warehouse it currently operates in Uozaki, near Rokko Island, providing customers with convenient and competitive logistics services. • Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has been awarded an approval in principle (AiP) by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for the design of a membrane LNG Carrier installing Wind Challenger. This innovative design has been jointly developed by MOL and Hanwha Ocean Co., Ltd. This AiP marks the world's first approval for an LNG carrier with a Wind-Assisted Propulsion System. The LNG carrier that has obtained this AiP is capable of entering LNG terminals worldwide (cargo tank capacity: 174,000 cubic meters), and is equipped with two Wind Challenger sails. The detailed design work is currently underway for a new LNG carrier ordered by MOL from Hanwha Ocean, aiming for actual installation. MOL, Hanwha Ocean, and ClassNK conducted a Risk assessment that comprehensively evaluated factors such as the placement of the sails, their impact on visibility, emergency operation procedures, and other safety measures, leading to the obtaining of this AiP. Additionally, the evaluation of the impact on the cargo tank due to the sail installation, conducted by Gaztransport et Technigaz SA (GTT), the designer of the vessel's cargo tank, contributed to obtaining this AiP. GTT has confirmed that the structural safety of the tank is sufficiently ensured, even when considering the stresses imposed by sails. MOL has set a mid-to-long-term target of "achieving net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 with the concerted effort throughout the Group" in the "MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2." One of the key strategies to achieve this target includes the "introduction of clean energy, further energy-saving technologies," and the group plans to launch 25 vessels equipped with the Wind Challenger by 2030 and 80 vessels by 2035. The MOL Group will contribute not only to the reduction of GHG emissions from its own group, but also to the reduction and decarbonization of a whole society through the safe management and efficient operation of its environmentally friendly fleet that combines wind propulsion technology, such as the Wind Challenger. • 【Creating a Ship Like No Other in the World- The Joy of Turning Imagination into Creation】 - MOL's Wind Hunter Project ⑦ Kentaro Shima, General Manager of the Technology Research Center Headquarters of Technological & Digital Transformation, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines "Since joining MOL, I have been involved not only in shipbuilding but also managing the vessels, dismantling and selling decommissioned ships. What these tasks have in common is that they all involve 'existing technology'. However, the Wind Hunter Project is a challenge to create a 'zero-emission ship'. Can you imagine the excitement I feel working on this project together with not just our colleagues, but also various companies and research institutes? Since the project started in 2020, we have conducted numerous experiments and verifications, step by step, without a textbook to guide us. Despite various efforts, when our small yacht finally sailed smoothly and produced hydrogen, we experienced firsthand how powerful and inspiring the transition 'from imagination to creation' can be. In the context of mountain climbing, the development of Wind Hunter technology is still around the second or third station. The true growing pains are yet to come. However, we project members are already well acquainted with the joy of creation and know we will only be moving forward.”
