Hailing from Australia’s cultural capital Melbourne, Jonah Gabriel is a laser-focussed young musician carving out his own path as a formidable composer, producer, and player. Finding his feet as a drummer and discovering his love for music, moving to keys, he now prepares to release his debut long-player ‘Cycles’. Beginning as a University project, 'Cycles’ quickly took on a life of its own, as Jonah brought in a host of talented collaborators to help bring the record to life, featuring a mosaic of electronic and acoustic sounds. It was primarily recorded in Melbourne, before being carefully developed and refined in Berlin over the course of 2 months.
‘Cycles’ is a sonic exploration in reflection, self-analysis and forward movement. With a focus on introspection, this immersive multi-sensory experience aims to highlight the cyclical nature of mental health; presenting its ebbs and flows through cascading moments - warm and cold, beauty and chaos, overstimulation and isolation. The project frames each track as a different stage of the journey towards self-improvement. It is a body of work that delves into different states of mind through its sound play, and is meticulously designed to be a personal experience on headphones.
The first single lifted from the project is ‘Ego Death’, a powerful statement of intent. A pensive saxophone motif cuts through a mystical haze, as an angular bassline urges the journey to continue deeper. Building momentum and energy as the track intensifies, a sense of celestial majesty is perfectly maintained through the fury. On the track, Jonah explains: “Ego Death draws inspiration from the moment you realise that a problem is more significant than you first believed. It’s about letting go and embracing whatever is coming your way. It’s the acceptance of the change needed to move forward”.
Throughout the album, the sound palette explores an abrasive, yet imaginative world through an intimate and woven tapestry of texture. The album’s core dynamism is largely built on the footprint of ‘cosmic’ music, with the likes of spiritual jazz, the krautrock movement and electronic music of the 90s being key points of reference. On the record’s inspiration, Jonah explains: “With ‘Cycles’, I wanted to create an immersive listening experience to get lost in. Something that feels like a brief transportation into another world, and hopefully something that can provide solace to listeners”.
‘Cycles’ is a masterclass in timing, building to moments of palpable tension and release, moving at a paste which is entirely its own. An intimidating release that will undoubtedly secure Jonah Gabriel’s place in the growing list of undeniable talent to emerge from Melbourne’s rich musical tapestry.
