Saudi Ports Authority Enhances Connectivity to European Ports with New Shipping Service Shipping Arabia, May 2, 2024 — The Saudi Ports Authority "Mawani" has announced a significant enhancement in the Kingdom's maritime connections with ports in North and South Europe through the introduction of the "LEVANTE EXPRESS" shipping service by Mediterranean Shipping Company "MSC." This service, which began operations in April 2024 at the Jeddah Islamic Port, establishes a robust connection between Saudi ports and key European destinations. The "LEVANTE EXPRESS" service is a testament to the growing confidence in Jeddah Islamic Port's operational efficiency and its capacity to handle diverse ship sizes and cargo types. This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia's National Transport and Logistics Strategy (NTLS), which aims to reinforce the Kingdom's role as a critical global logistics hub bridging three continents. Offering direct routes from Jeddah Islamic Port to prominent European ports such as La Spezia and Naples in Italy, Mersin in Turkey, and Alexandria in Egypt, the service provides regular weekly voyages and boasts a handling capacity of up to 15,000 TEUs. This expansion significantly enhances Jeddah Islamic Port’s competitive position for exporters, importers, and shipping agents. Ongoing developmental efforts by Mawani are set to propel the port into the global top 10 rankings. Notably, recent enhancement and development works at the Northern Container Terminal, with investments totaling SAR 6.6 billion, have substantially upgraded the port's operational capabilities and logistics service efficiency. Jeddah Islamic Port features 62 multi-purpose berths and offers a comprehensive range of logistics services, including bonded and re-export zones. It supports a direct truck transport system to and from the port and houses specialized terminals and advanced facilities. These include two container handling terminals with a combined capacity of 7.5 million standard TEUs, two general cargo terminals, two ship repair docks, and various marine service quays for mooring and maritime guidance, capable of managing up to 130 million tons annually. This development is aimed at bolstering the company's efficiency in handling and storing containers and cargo. The company has initiated two tenders for the procurement of these vital pieces of equipment, including 14 diesel forklifts with capacities of 3 and 5 tons, and two electric forklifts with a capacity of 3 tons each. The technical bid opening session is scheduled for next Sunday, following a one-week extension of the tender deadline. This procurement aligns with the directives issued during the recent ordinary general assembly chaired by Major General Kamel Al-Wazir, the Minister of Transport. The assembly approved the company’s budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025, emphasizing the strategic role of Port Said Container & Cargo Handling in the national maritime sector and the necessity for ongoing modernization to maintain its competitive edge. CMA-CGM Adjusts Heavy Weight Shipping Charges for Routes from the Middle East and Gulf to Europe Shipping Arabia, June 28, 2024 — In a recent update, CMA-CGM, the French shipping giant, announced an increase in heavy weight shipping charges applicable to cargo from the Middle East and Gulf regions to various European destinations. Effective from July 6, the revised tariff will impose an additional fee of $200 per 20-foot dry container weighing 15 tons or more. This adjustment will affect shipments directed towards Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Poland, both the Western and Eastern Mediterranean regions, the Adriatic and Baltic Seas, North Africa, and Morocco. This price revision aligns with CMA-CGM’s ongoing efforts to adapt its service offerings to the market demands. The company also recently initiated the EMED 1 service, enhancing connectivity between Turkey, Egypt, and Lebanon. The service, which started in week 28 of this year, operates weekly, linking the Turkish port of Antalya with Alexandria in Egypt and Beirut in Lebanon, facilitating smoother global trade routes. Furthermore, CMA-CGM is actively involved in the significant Tahya Misr multipurpose terminal project at the Port of Alexandria. Milaha Sustains Profitability. Qatar Navigation (Milaha) has recently announced a very positive set of results covering the first quarter of 2024. Operating revenues of QAR 747 million for the three months ending March 31st compared to QR 766 million for the same period in 2023, while the operating profit of QAR 208 million for the same three months compared to QAR 210 million for the equivalent period the the year before. This initiative aligns with Mawani's strategic goals to elevate port operations and support the sector's growth as part of the Kingdom's broader ambitions to become a global logistics hub. The newly issued licenses span a diverse range of port activities. Key areas include piloting, maritime support and assistance, maritime navigational aids, port operations, routine ship repair, and maintenance. The package also extends to container handling, storage services within port and customs or free zones, maritime consulting, and construction and maintenance of port docks and maritime facilities. Additionally, the permits cover activities critical to environmental and operational sustainability, such as fuel supply to ships, recycling and waste management for ships, ballast water indicator tests, hydrographic surveying, and the establishment of training and qualification centers for port operations. The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has introduced the "Clanga" shipping service at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, aiming to bolster commercial ties with critical Asian markets. This strategic addition aligns with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which seeks to transform the Kingdom into a pivotal logistics hub bridging Asia, Africa, and Europe. The "Clanga" service offers weekly sailings, linking Dammam directly with major ports including Ningbo, Shanghai, and Shekou in China, plus Singapore, with a vessel capacity reaching up to 15,000 TEUs. King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam has demonstrated robust growth in its operational performance in the first half of 2024. 🌍 #FIDIfocus: Revenue for the Suez Canal has been almost halved due to ongoing attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea. According to a report in The Maritime Executive, profits for May fell to around US$337.8 million, compared to $648 last year. The number of vessels passing through the canal during the month fell to 1,111, a drop of 1,285 on the previous year; while the amount of cargo dropped by 68.5 per cent, to around 44.9 million tonnes, down from 142.9mt in May 2023. Many companies are avoiding the risk of travelling through the Suez Canal as Houthis continue to target ships at the southern end of the waterway.   To increase business, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) recently extended fee discounts to some vessels on long-distance journeys. It introduced the fee reductions in January, cutting as much as 75 percent for product tankers and crude carriers travelling between the Americas and Asia. The extension will be valid until the end of the year, and covers 12 categories of ships including bulk carriers, container ships and LNG carriers. KBRV meets with European Commission to provide feedback on #EUETS Together with other European shipowner associations and companies, the Royal Belgian Shipowners' Association (KBRV) met with public officials of the Directorate-General Climate of the European Commission to provide their feedback on the EU ETS for maritime. With the entry into force of the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) for the maritime industry since this January, the European shipping sector is on its path towards contributing towards Europe's ambitious climate goals. With the experiences collected by its members and those of its counterparts in other EU member states, the KBRV met with Commission officials to share its insights and feedback, in order to ensure the continued success and refinement of this vital regulatory framework. Representing the KBRV was Celine Audenaerdt, Head of Environmental & Technical Affairs: "Earlier in May, we published a position paper on our findings about the implementation challenges of EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime. The paper was very well received by both policymakers and across the industry, especially on our recommendations on navigating the regulatory environment and how to achieve compliance. "With today’s meeting, we wanted to create the possibility for EU authorities to receive direct, practical feedback from our members based on their own experience.” According to Ms Audenaerdt the meeting was very constructive and it opened a dialogue for further understanding of the industry’s specific needs.
