If you're in your mid-twenties you're either running a half marathon or launching a SaaS. Or, you're running a half marathon with people who are building a SaaS. I just spent a few days in Lisbon with Martina Domenicali (founder of Lexroom.ai), Pietro Picozzi (growth in Jet HR) and Riccardo G. (AE in Revolut). We worked from Selina on Friday and run the half marathon together on Sunday. We are building and working for 4 companies in 4 different stages (from pre seed to billions in revenue), which means there are countless learnings in every conversations we have. Tactical questions (How do you qualify leads? How's the sales incentive plan? What does work life balance mean for you? Any advice for fundraising?) and deeper questions (what do you want to get out of this experience? How do you think this job is shaping your next move?) were naturally flowing as we ate countless Pastel de Nata. While conversations prompted us to learn more about each other, running the half marathon prompted us to learn more about ourselves. I decided to start training for this race back in July, when I opened the fundraising. I needed a way to build resilience, and running is just perfect: it's free, you can squeeze it in your busy agenda, and it really forces you to be mentally in the moment. When I run my first half marathon last year I was barely in control: I finished it with little to no training, just for the sake of being able to say "I did it". This time, I was in control, I had fun, and more importantly I got to share it with people I deeply admire and from whom I get to learn constantly. So if you needed a sign to sign up for a half marathon, go on a little working trip with people who work in different companies or start building your own company - this is it! 😎 A special thanks to Pietro Picozzi who stayed next to me for 21km and helped me get through painful cramps. I feel so happy for all of those who will get a chance to be coached by you.

Here’s why I don’t believe in VC Funding, at least here in Italy! 👇 I know it may sound harsh, but hear me out: The entrepreneurship model is totally missing. When we built intranet.ai many years ago, we had some great ideas and an already developed product, but we weren’t yet live on the market. So, we started looking for investors. When you ask a VC to fundraise your project, the first thing they’ll do is ask for guarantees. Guarantees in a seed stage? What? How do you ensure that you can make it when — even if you have all the skills and good ideas — you don’t know how the project will turn out? Truth is, that many Italians wannabe VC act more like a bank. It’s not an investment they’re making, but rather lending you money. And quite frankly they don’t necessarily believe in you nor your project. That’s why we decided to steer away from funding models and followed our guts. We decided to do it on our own terms: fully bootstrapped, Intranet.ai is now a worldwide product, installed in more than 200 companies, with 20+ employees 🚀 What’s your experience with funding? How to become indispensable as TA & People Partners? 5 DOs and DON’Ts We asked TA leaders at some of the most advanced tech companies ( Glovo, Adevinta, OLX etc.) in Europe a simple question: "How can we make ourself indispensable as TA & People Partners?" Important to note that: ❕They sometime disagreed with each other ❕They don’t have all the answers ❕They spoke for themselves Now, summarising what I understood from the discussion, let’s start with 3 DONTs ❌ Don’t be scared of changes and about AI ❌ Don’t build large internal teams ❌ Don’t lack in self-confidence Here, how I’d summarise the main takeaways as 5 DOs: ✅ Mindset: add business value, not only within TA ✅ Jump on the AI train, focus on efficiency ✅ Small internal team + flexible resources ✅ Position yourself as a strategic advisor ✅ Own your craft and be proud Overall, the sentiment was cautiously optimistic about the future, with everyone mostly agreeing that: ☝️Human connection and recruiting will make recruiters needed ☝️We have to be OK with not knowing how things will change ☝️TA Professionals will still be fundamental in the future What am I missing?

Long-term care start-ups in Germany are announcing new partnerships with statutory payers almost every month. Yesterday, I had the pleasure to join a webinar organized by Vilans, a leading long-term care organization in the Netherlands. I presented the key dynamics in long-term care in Germany and the main start-ups to watch. A few additional thoughts: 1️⃣ 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟 & 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 #𝟏 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 There is a crisis on the demand side (always more elderly people in need of care) and on the supply side (not enough nursing staff). Technology is a key enabler to address this. 2️⃣ 𝐃𝐢𝐏𝐀 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 I was first invited to the webinar yesterday to talk about #DiPA, which is the "DiGA for nursing". The DiPA framework would define a standard certification process and certified Care Apps (that are not medical products) would be reimbursed by the social care fund (up to 50 € / month). Even if DiPA should have been implemented in 2022, it is still not there. And it might never happen. However, this DiPA framework might not be needed. For example, Nui Care, a Caregivers' coordination App, which would typically be eligible for DiPA, is showing good traction, making direct deals with statutory payors. 3️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬: 𝐚 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 Before the webinar yesterday, I always took the Netherlands as the role model for long-term care in Europe. A company like Buurtzorg, based on self-organized care teams, is a best practice example. However, the Netherlands is spending 4%+ of its GDP on long term care (ranking the highest with Denmark), while the average in the OECD country is 1.5%. If nothing changes, 1 out of 4 persons in the Netherlands would have to work in #healthcare in 2040 to cope with the demand. This is not sustainable. 4️⃣ 𝐍𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦-𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 The Orpea scandal in France is one example that #nursing homes might not be the solution for long-term care. Germany prioritizes keeping patients in need at home. Even at "level 5" care needs (the highest level), over 50% of patients receive #care at-home. 5️⃣ 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 The at-home nursing market is a very fragmented market. In Germany, the top 15 players only capture 5% of the market. This creates inefficiencies. Typically, a nurse would do up to 50% of tasks that a less qualified person could do. Shifting care tasks to the appropriate skill level is a significant improvement lever. This is just one examples out of many. #healthtech Thank you Henk for the invite and insights!
