Why might European buyers be more relaxed than their US counterparts when it comes to the pace of airline NDC rollout? Could it be a direct correlation to the strategy of one of the US carriers in particular, so it's closer to home? And if that's the case, is it really a disparity between European and US travel managers about NDC rollout or more-so the what/why & how of overall corporate travel strategy & engagement with stakeholders in the market v NDC strategy per se? Back from TTG Travel Experience - ITALIAN EXHIBITION GROUP where I came across a fascinating report by AARP titled "Click, Book, Go: Travel Technology Use Among Travelers Age 50-Plus." The survey reveals interesting insights into how older Americans utilize technology in the travel industry. The findings show that 94% of respondents are comfortable with technology, with 89% using it for planning and research, 87% for booking, and 80% during travel. Interestingly, those who incorporate technology in their travel process tend to spend over three times more money on their trips compared to those who do not. As Cocooners Travel, we understand the growing importance of technology in travel. However, we also value the human touch and the opportunity for travelers to engage with others throughout their journey. After analysing the 2017/2019 hotel industry, Luca and I uncovered the key factors that democratised reservation technology—a transformation that the experiences industry has yet to fully embrace. Back then, channel management was a luxury for accommodations. Phocuswright reported that hotels were spending between $2,000 & $5,000/month on channel management solutions. The turning point came when tech providers shifted to a monthly subscription model ranging from $100 to $500/month. This change led to cost reductions of up to 80% for hoteliers. As a result, adoption rates increased dramatically—from 30% to 65% within just two years. This business model shift not only brought cost predictability but also democratised access to essential technology for hotels of all sizes. I believe the experiences sector is at a similar crossroads today. That's why I'm piloting CaptainBook.io through a transformative new business model: eliminating booking fees—even for our channel management—and offering services through a monthly subscription. This approach allows operators to save thousands of dollars annually. For CaptainBook, it means a more stable income stream, facilitating better financial planning and enabling further investment in our products. Are we getting dangerously close to having too many influencers? Social media often feels like a hamster wheel of ads fighting for attention—an excess of quantity and a serious lack of quality. Yet, over 80% (!!!) of consumers are influenced by social media posts. For travel agents looking to distinguish themselves online, it's time to break the marketing mold. Every agency seems to echo the same message— 'five-star,' 'luxury,' and 'exclusivity.' The constant repetition has led to saturation, where 'luxury' is more of a marketing trend than a true reflection of quality. What was once a marker of something rare and special now feels overused and, ironically, less exclusive. Modern marketing is not about showcasing high-end amenities, but about creating unique experiences. It's about being genuine, deeply personal, and offering something that can't be easily replicated. The truth is that real luxury is about authenticity, about offering something that isn’t mass-produced or easily accessible to just anyone. It’s about finding that one-of-a-kind experience, that handcrafted detail, or that personal connection that can’t be packaged and sold to the masses. Consider the difference between a grand hotel that touts its sprawling size and lavish rooms and a boutique property where each detail—from the locally sourced artwork and interior elements to the familial service—is curated with intention and care. The latter, while perhaps imperfect, offers an experience that cannot simply be copied; it is luxury not because it calls itself so but because it resonates deeply with the traveler seeking something meaningful and true. The challenge is not just about keeping up with this evolution, but about staying ahead of it. Travelers are increasingly seeking experiences that are truly unique and tailor-made rather than simply lavish. As an agency, it's our job to ensure that our advisors are equipped to tell stories that resonate. Seeking deeper connection & thinking like a storyteller -- these are the details that will make today's travel influencer stand out.
