Imagine this: you're working from home, you've just sent a presentation via Slack, asking for feedback, and then you spot it—a silly spelling mistake repeated throughout the document. 😨 Panic sets in as you realize your colleagues are already reviewing it and have likely seen the error. No immediate responses > growing anxiety > confidence disappearing. It’s a vicious cycle that doesn’t break until someone responds or you get the chance to explain. Exchange the presentation for any work artifact, and the spelling mistake for any mistake, and you have a scenario many people in hybrid work environments have experienced🙋🏼‍♀️ I’ve been there too, even though I wasn't new or junior at my company. Have you ever launched a product only to face a barrage of negative reviews? Most of us have been there one way or another. It’s embarrassing. It can really knock the wind out of your sales. But it doesn't have to be that way. After 35 years in usability testing, we’ve seen it all and learned what works and what doesn’t. We could give you a huge list of do’s and don’ts, but we’ll stick with two big takeaways for now. First, everything you create must be usability tested. Period. Second, you have the choice to fail quietly and effectively or to fail loudly and miserably. Too many product owners think they can wait until launch to see how users react. Big mistake. You're essentially using your customers as guinea pigs, and trust me, they won't appreciate it. Instead, start testing early. I'm talking about concept phase early. Get user feedback before you've even built a prototype. Then, keep testing at every stage: prototype, development, pre-launch. It's like having a conversation with your users throughout the entire process. "But Adrienne," you might protest, "that sounds expensive and time-consuming." Wrong! You know what's expensive? Launching a product that bombs because you didn't bother to check if anyone actually wants it. By testing early and often, you can course-correct quickly and cheaply. No public embarrassment, no costly post-launch fixes, just smooth sailing to a product your users will love. So, I challenge you to commit to usability testing at every stage of your next project. Just try it and see the result for yourself.

Filters are live 🗣️ (Phew! It feels reaaaally good to say that!) We've finally launched filters on our results set - a seemingly obvious feature for a marketplace but not as simple to implement as it sounds. Recently, this has been our most requested feature... driven by customers feedback, friends, and my mom 😅 As our supply grew, naturally so did the requests for easier discoverability, and we could finish the sentence every time someone said: “I love Conservio and your website, but I’d just love to be able to…” The challenge? Aside from development complexity... the key is actually balancing functionality with density. A filter is only as good as the options it provides. So, instead of rushing filters for filters-sake, we prioritized regional density first, ensuring we had 500 properties across South Africa’s regions. This way users can fine-tune their searches while still having plenty of relevant results to choose from. Essentially, the goal is that users land on options that fit their desired filter combination, and still have choice. No one wants to search South Africa, Western Cape, hot tub & pet-friendly only to find… nothing. It's a tricky balance but we made it. Filters are here, and they’re only going to get better as we continue to add new properties daily. And we can start using data on filter search combinations to ensure we onboard more of exactly what users are looking for! Woohoo! Seeing this says to me the Ruroc EOX launch has flopped. If you're asking customers "why didn't you buy" with options of: "Product Design isn't good enough" "I am waiting for a good promotion" ...You have to be deluded if you think you're going to get actionable information from a survey like this. Here's what has gone wrong for Ruroc. Firstly, "EOX" was designed as the 'Finale' of the Atlas line. It should have been positioned as the pinnacle of the range and should have replaced the Atlas 4. Atlas was plagued with issues from v1.0. We rushed, the pandemic hit, suppliers messed us around, we had to build our own factory REMOTELY to keep up with demand. To fix the issue once and for all I hired a specialist product designer who built out the team to deliver the 'perfect product'. It was costly, but it would allow us to reduce our Customer Service costs, return logistics costs, and reduce our in-house QC team from 18 to just 2-3. A huge cost to get a huge saving. Absolutely necessary for Ruroc to stabilise and continue growing at 70-100% YOY. That product, the one that should have been Ruroc's biggest success, is now called "EOX". To sell products online and grow successfully you need: - Scarcity - "I want stuff other people don't have yet, or I don't want to regret not buying when I had the chance." - Innovation - People want the latest greatest and best... if it's not that, why am I giving you my money if my current product does the job? - Social Proof - it's FOMO, who's wearing it, who's buying it, am I going to be the odd one out if I don't buy? - Reciprocity - What's this brand done for me? How have they engaged me? Do I buy into their mission, do I feel obliged to be part of it. - Commitment - OK I've pre-registered, I've followed the page, I've signed up for the newsletter, I'm watching the launch video, I'm going to buy. Not one of these tactics was properly employed during the launch of the "EOX" Further to that, some genius has made the decision to continue with the Atlas 4 and have it run alongside the EOX So now, as a customer of Ruroc, what does this say to me. Ruroc Atlas 4.0 Track - $679.00 (Has no real track certificate) Ruroc Atlas 4.0 Carbon - $595.00 Ruroc "EOX" - $559.00 (brand new should be better than Atlas 4) Ruroc Atlas 4.0 Street (fibreglass) - $319.00 (Confusingly is lighter than the Track and Carbon Atlas) So if I want the best, I buy the most expensive helmet? I can wear it on the Track right? No, not in USA or MotoGP. I want the lightest, so I buy the cheapest? I want the newest, but is it worse than the old models because it's cheaper? This is beyond confusing for customers. Customers give brands minimal attention. Your messaging is as much in the decisions you make around naming and pricing as it is anything else. Ruroc "Atlas-X" - $659.00 Drop the Atlas 4.0 and discount til it's gone Clear message to consumers - "the new product is better, replace your old helmet now" It's not hard.
