I quickly realised the importance of visibility and adopted a two-fold strategy centred on authenticity and strategic connections: Genuine Connections: At events and online, I aimed to help and connect authentically, prioritising trust over mere exchanges. Strategic Engagement: Joining professional associations (Chartered Institute of Linguists, International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters- IAPTI, the Italian Chamber of Commerce, Cambridge Wireless Ltd and many more) wasn’t merely a learning exercise—it strategically positioned me in front of potential clients needing my expertise. There are numerous instances where this approach has proven successful. Still, I'll mention a couple: it paid off when a colleague recommended me for a major certified translation project, and my membership in one of the above-listed professional associations led to a gig at a high-profile event. This calls for actively nurturing your network and becoming a valuable industry resource. Simultaneous Speech #Translation: from sentence to speech-based approach by Claudio Fantinuoli -- Simultaneous speech translation is shifting from isolated sentence translation to processing larger speech segments, improving semantic and grammatical accuracy. Traditional #machinetranslation often ignored co-text, leading to errors, especially in gendered language. Advances in neural machine translation and large language models now incorporate co-text for more accurate translations. In real-time translation, systems retain prior segments, ensuring consistency, such as gender agreement. For example, "She is very good" is now correctly rendered as "molto brava" in Italian. While challenges like nuanced language and cultural references remain, integrating co-text is a major step forward, making machine #interpreting increasingly reliable. Italian and Spanish speakers routinely misuse the English word "welfare" to mean benefits. Translators who are not alert will therefore come up with some unintended meanings: "All of our employees receive welfare." = We don't pay our employees enough, so they have to survive on public assistance. "Our company is No. 1 in corporate welfare." = Our company has corrupt sweetheart deals with politicians and government bureaucrats who funnel taxpayer money to us that we don't deserve. Today I saw that there's an award in Europe that recognizes companies as "Welfare Champion". In English this would mean a lazy person who plays the system to get huge amounts of public assistance without working.

"English is fine, everyone understands it, why would I need to translate my content?" 🤔 Mmh, are we sure about that? If you are a business thinking about expanding to the Italian market and you have thought/said this sentence, think twice! 🙊 It’s crucial to remember that not everyone speaks English. In Italy, only 13% of the population speaks it, and not necessarily at the right level to understand your brand and what you want to communicate or convey. 🛍️ CSA Research found that 𝟳𝟲% 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲. If your #LinkedIn profile does not attract potential customers, it is mostly to do with the faulty and ridiculous LinkedIn algorithms. I keep getting job offers for #translation work into Korean, even though I do not speak a single word of Korean, and yet LinkedIn tells me that I'm perfectly qualified to apply for the position. LinkedIn algorithms also keep sending me English to French translation work, even though my profile makes it very clear that I only translate from French to English. #LITranslators

How was the past month for you? Throughout my career, I've always had many interpreting and translation assignments for many Italian companies during this hot period before the summer holidays. July was a month of significant professional growth for me. I dedicated many hours to preparing for two crucial #interpreting gigs: one with a high-potential Italian company facing foreign markets and another with an international delegation. 🆕 I helped ELCIPACK introduce its packaging products to a new foreign client via video call at its premises in Colorno. 🆕 Confindustria Piacenza entrusted me with assisting a delegation from Camerun and easing the communication for a profitable business deal. In addition, I had several #translation projects to work on, including: ❗ the catalogue and datasheets for ATON Green Storage, a loyal client; ❗ the website of a new client through a #marketing agency; ❗ the final revision of a big German #luxury portal, now available in Italy; ❗ a total of 30.000 words of #beauty training materials for different clients. And last but not least: ✔ I took part in one online conversation, "Journey with Minerals", by L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts; ✔ I went on with my #copywriting course at the College of Media and Publishing; ✔ I completed the onboarding process for a big LSP, and I'm now ready to accept new, challenging tasks in my luxury specialisation sectors; ✔ I started revamping my website with new ideas and inputs after our mind-blowing #GreekRetreat held by Virginia Katsimpiri, eMBA, PhDc; ✔ I had several offers and chats with new potential suppliers, asking about my new needs as my business is growing; ✔ I market my services to new potential clients as far as #jewellery and #watchmaking translation is concerned, and also as a consecutive interpreter for the coming exhibitions in September; ✔ I added significant new connections to my LinkedIn network. What keeps me going? 🏖💕 Please have a look on my desk at the two beautiful coasters from Ios and Serifos, which remind me how far I've come since the beginning of my business and how much I can implement to go further. Despite the achievements, there's always room for improvement. I'm constantly seeking new opportunities to learn and grow, so stay tuned for the next steps in my journey of continuous improvement!

Attending SlatorCon London 2024 with Federica Bonomi and LingvoHouse Translation and Localisation was a real eye-opener 👀, dishing out some essential insights for our #sales strategy. One of the biggest takeaways is the increasing demand for #multilingual text generation 🌍, with a whopping 40% of localisation buyers after this feature. Real-time speech-to-text, though, is still a bit rough around the edges, which means there's a massive opportunity for us to step in and innovate 💡. The conference also highlighted how #AI is our new best mate 🤖. To stay ahead, we need to dive into LangAI. Offering proofreading services to fix AI's inevitable hiccups will assure our clients of top-notch quality 🔧. This fits perfectly with the current market trend where the younger crowd isn't as obsessed with perfection, so having clear metrics to show our standards is key 📊. Iris Orriss from Meta stressed the importance of quality in #localisation and how AI can boost efficiency, even if it's not perfect ✨. We must educate our clients about AI’s limitations and benefits, making sure they understand why human oversight is still necessary 🧠. Bryan Murphy from Smartling showed us how AI can be integrated into #translation workflows, cutting costs and boosting efficiency 💰. A crucial insight was that clients need to take responsibility for accuracy in DIY scenarios, which just reinforces the value of professional oversight ✔️. Martina Pancot from Vinted shared the foundation of large-scale localisation programs, like #content mapping, #budgeting, vision, and strategy 🗺️. She pointed out that source content needs to be tailored to different markets to avoid legal headaches ⚖️. The panel discussions underscored the perks of language #automation, especially in regulated content where human curation is still essential 🔍. The future, as highlighted by David Parry-Jones, Joy Uzuegbu, ACIM, and Chloe Ratcliffe, is all about blending AI with human expertise 🤝. Attending #SlatorCon has armed us with the know-how to navigate the twists and turns of localisation, balancing AI advancements with human expertise to not just meet but exceed client expectations 🌟. FocusPM is over and I really want to share why I found it so important even considering my role as Business Development Manager in CMT-translations - Traduzioni - Trascrizioni - Interpreti, so here’s my takeaways from the second day of ELIA - European Language Industry Association #FocusPM 2024 🌟 1️⃣ Understanding team dynamics to improve collaboration. Everyone shines in a different role: some organize, others motivate, and some solve problems. Tools like Belbin and DISC can help us embrace these differences, enhancing not only productivity but also collective well-being. 💡 2️⃣ The importance of being entrepreneurial within your role. Being an intrapreneur means anticipating needs, proposing new ideas, and developing opportunities. As a BDM, I see this approach as the key to creating new products, projects, and business opportunities. It’s not just about managing, it’s about building the future. 🚀 🌀 Final thoughts on the event: ELIA Focus on PM once again proves to be an endless source of inspiration, enriching not only our skills but also our vision, also thanks to people like Richard Brooks, who with his closing Keynote left a lasting impression of passion and vision on these extraordinary two days. 🙌 💬 A special thank you to all the speakers, especially Marina Liuzzi and Matilde Santetti with whom I truly share a deep passion for AI and the future we can shape from it. The agreement has been signed, and your European Works Council (EWC) is officially up and running—congratulations! Now, it’s time to dive into the real work of building connections and making your voice heard. But where do you start? Here are some key things to keep in mind: ✅ Build strong relationships: Take time to get to know your fellow delegates from across different countries. A good working relationship is the foundation for presenting a united front to management. ✅ Learn the ropes: Industrial relations and labour laws vary widely across Europe. Understanding these differences will help avoid misunderstandings and make sure everyone is on the same page. ✅ Stick together: Before facing management, align with your colleagues on key points. Speaking as one voice will give your group more credibility and strength. ✅ Keep things professional: Discussions can get heated, but mutual respect will always get you further than conflict. I’ve seen time and again how EWCs can create meaningful change when they’re built on clear communication and mutual understanding. I finished binging "Ripley" on #Netflix at the weekend and loved the dynamic localisation of on-screen text from Italian into English. "What do you mean by dynamic localisation?", I hear you ask... Well, in most subtitled content, on-screen text (OST), whether diegetic (exists within the world of the story/can be seen by the characters) or non-diegetic (superimposed, like titles), is translated by adding a normal subtitle in capital letters to distinguish the OST from speech. Without revealing any spoilers, there is a lot of newspaper headlines in the last few episodes. Instead of adding a subtitle to translate the text, the diegetic Italian text is replaced with English, one letter at a time (a bit like an old-school PowerPoint transition). Similarly, in another scene, Ripley looks towards a building, and the Italian sign is replaced with English. Here, the translation hasn't been an afterthought. As it's part of the original version, a more dynamic and immersive solution is possible. It's like a little tongue-in-cheek nod to the audience and their needs. Plus, it draws the audience's eye to the exact text they need to be focusing on, unlike a standard OST subtitle placed at the bottom of the screen. I'd love to see localisation like this in more subtitled content. It does require more time and resources than adding a subtitle, but it's relatively simple and pulls the English-speaking audience further into the drama.
