A Sustainable Concept for a Human Exploration Spacecraft
Proceedings of "Space Exploration International Conference - October 29-31, 2014, Strasbourg (France)"
There is growing consensus within the international space community that the surface of Mars is the ultimate destination for human exploration efforts over the next two decades. As this consensus solidifies, the focus will turn to the necessary steps and associated capabilities that will be required to execute such a challenging mission. It is desirable to consider International participation in any follow on capabilities that are developed. NASA is making significant progress on development of…
There is growing consensus within the international space community that the surface of Mars is the ultimate destination for human exploration efforts over the next two decades. As this consensus solidifies, the focus will turn to the necessary steps and associated capabilities that will be required to execute such a challenging mission. It is desirable to consider International participation in any follow on capabilities that are developed. NASA is making significant progress on development of the Space Launch System (SLS) and the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle that will form the basis of any exploration program.
A Deep Space Habitat and a Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP)-based transfer stage may represent the next logical capabilities that should be developed. Together with SLS and Orion, these new capabilities would allow a number of exciting interim missions to be executed and demonstrate critical capabilities that will be employed for a Mars mission.
In this paper Aerojet Rocketdyne and Thales Alenia Space will outline concepts for a Deep Space Habitat and SEP Transfer Stage, including features for extensibility and augmentation of capabilities, and investigate possible missions that could be accomplished using these elements in conjunction with SLS and Orion.Altri autoriVedi pubblicazione -
Modified energy cascade model adapted for a multicrop Lunar greenhouse prototype
Advances in Space Research

Models are required to accurately predict mass and energy balances in a bioregenerative life support system. A modified energy cascade model was used to predict outputs of a multi-crop (tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce and strawberries) Lunar greenhouse prototype. The model performance was evaluated against measured data obtained from several system closure experiments. The model predictions corresponded well to those obtained from experimental measurements for the overall system closure test period (five months), especially for biomass produced (0.7% underestimated), water consumption (0.3% overestimated) and condensate production (0.5% overestimated).
However, the model was less accurate when the results were compared with data obtained from a shorter experimental time period, with 31%, 48% and 51% error for biomass uptake, water consumption, and condensate production, respectively, which were obtained under
more complex crop production patterns (e.g. tall tomato plants covering part of the lettuce production zones). These results, together with a model sensitivity analysis highlighted the necessity of periodic characterization of the environmental parameters (e.g. light levels, air leakage) in the Lunar greenhouse.Altri autoriVedi pubblicazione -
Concept of a Lunar FARM: Food And Revitalization Module

The study focused on the design of a Permanent Human mOon Exploration BasE (PHOEBE) located in the Moon South Pole region and its supporting infrastructures. Among all the Moon base building blocks identified and studied, the paper analyzes the impact of a greenhouse, denominated Food And Revitalization Module (FARM), over the feasibility of the human Moon settlement, considering PHOEBE lifetime of 20 years.
The objective of the FARM project has been to design a plant growth chamber module to be integrated in a bio-regenerative life support system for PHOEBE and to evaluate the impact of various bio-regenerative system concepts with respect to a typical physico-chemical ECLS system. The design process began with a system analysis, essentially devoted to the study of the required functionalities of the system. A crop analysis has been performed to analyze the plant performances and from these results, different options of diet/crop combinations have been evaluated, starting from a greenhouse able to fulfill almost 100% of all the nutritional needs of the crew, and scaling down to less than 50% of the needs, with food integrations from Earth. The most impacting subsystems have been studied and a possible configuration (both internally and externally) has been designed.
The results of the trade-off, based on an Equivalent System Mass approach, showed that after 11 years one greenhouse with cultivation area of 538 m2 and cultivation volume of 222 m3 was adequate for the diet of 18 astronauts on the permanent Moon base, based on 84% of vegetarian food produced on the base and a remaining 16% of food re-supplied from Earth.Altri autoriVedi pubblicazione -
Plant bioregenerative life supports - The Italian CAB Project
Journal of Plant Interactions
The Bioregenerative Life Support program CAB (Controllo Ambientale Biorigenerativo) is a key element of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) Medicine & Biotechnology scientific program, set forth in the ASI Activity Plan 20062008. The CAB program started in October 2006, under the prime partnership of Thales Alenia Space Italia, with a feasibility study of a controlled biological system, allowing the regeneration of resources and the production of food for life support in long duration missions. Main constituents of the CAB program are: (a) Higher plants as basic elements for food and oxygen production, CO2 regeneration and water purification via the photosynthetic and leaf transpiration processes, and (b) biological & physico-chemical systems for environmental control, monitoring, power & data distribution, etc. The sectors of
technological and scientific concern are practically all the ones typical for life support systems in the frame of long duration
human missions; i.e., food production, in particular via the cultivation of higher plants, and food management; air
regeneration (production of O2, removal of CO2, trace gas control); water regeneration (urine processing, gray water processing, potable water management); solid waste processing; resources allocation and storage; control of environmental conditions (Thermal-hygrometric, light, pressure, radiation, etc).Altri autoriVedi pubblicazione
