🔍Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation: Study on new product priorities 📣 The European Commission's Joint Research Centre has published a study on new product priorities in connection with the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. The ESPR entered into force this year and aims to make sustainable products the norm. 📝 The study looked at a number of product groups and horizontal requirements to see if they were suitable for action under the ESPR. The criteria used were environmental impacts and improvement potential, market relevance, policy coverage in the EU, cost reflections, and contribution towards EU Open Strategic Autonomy. ✅ It identified 11 final products, seven intermediate products and three horizontal requirements (durability, recyclability, recycled content) as potential priorities for the next steps in preparing the first ESPR Working Plan. 👉 Study on new Products Priorities: https://lnkd.in/dbEPGRFD

📢 Enabling a circular economy in the built environment 👉 A better understanding of construction industry stakeholders’ motivations can lead to greater adoption of circular practices. The amount of waste generated by the construction sector underscores an urgent need for embracing circularity — a sustainable model that aims to minimize waste and maximize material efficiency through recovery and reuse — in the built environment: 600 million tons of construction and demolition waste was produced in the United States alone in 2018, with 820 million tons reported in the European Union, and an excess of 2 billion tons annually in China. ⏩ Up2Circ aims to accelerate and scale up the transition of European SMEs towards circular economy. They can apply for EU-funding of up to from 15 000€ for a feasibility study and 50 000€ for a pilot. Here is one of our success story ! ⛵ Xtramarine conceived XFUN (Xtramarine Flexible Ultralight Navigation unit), a new concept for sustainable mobility using electric propulsion. 💼 They needed support to finetune the business plan accordingly to the relevant circular strategies. 📊 The feasibility study funded by Up2Circ allowed them to explore the different opportunities to adopt circular economy strategies having a clearer overview on what has a real ecological impact. ➡️ More information : https://lnkd.in/dGfA-vQh 📅 And if you want to be the next to be funded, stay tuned because another call is planned on February 2025 !

🌟𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐞𝐬: 𝐔𝐩𝟐𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜 & 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤! The partnership between Up2Circ and Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) showcases the power of collaboration in driving systemic change across Europe. 🤝 While Enterprise Europe Network connects SMEs with international opportunities through its expansive network, Up2Circ provides in-depth, hands-on support to help businesses transition to circular business models. Together, we form a dynamic ecosystem that empowers businesses and advances Europe’s leadership in the global #circulareconomy. 📍 On 28 November in Thessaloniki, a decentralized training session on the Textiles Ecosystem Transition was held: 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐌𝐄𝐬 & 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬. Organized in collaboration with the EEN Sector Group Textiles & Thematic Group Sustainability, the event brought practical tools and insights to the forefront. Our colleague from Up2Circ team Silke Schleiff from TUTECH INNOVATION GMBH conducted 2 sessions: 🔹 Train the Trainer: Building expertise in circular economy, product design, and business processes. 🔹 Supporting SMEs: Sharing the Up2Circ methodology and tools to help advisors guide businesses in adopting circular innovations. 🚀 Together, we're building the skills and networks to drive a sustainable future! 🌍 Monika Nagy Enterprise Europe Network Hellas Enterprise Europe Network Hellas SBE Mikael Garellick Marta Batalla Massana European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) Federica Leonetti Agnieszka Wielgórecka Karolina Oblacewicz Christina-Eleni Zarmpouni Ceu Filipe Rossana Colombo Mariagrazia Berardi Sara M. 🤔👗👕 Did you know that the 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟎.𝟑% 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫? This means only a fraction of the raw materials consumed come from secondary materials—resources previously considered waste that are reintroduced into the production cycle. Out of the 3.26 billion tonnes of raw materials used annually, only 9.6 million tonnes are secondary materials, such as recycled polyester (from PET bottles) and recycled cotton. Shockingly, most of these secondary materials come from outside the textile industry rather than from its own waste streams. To put this into perspective, the textile industry's Circularity Metric lags significantly behind the global average of 7.2%, highlighting an urgent need for innovation and systemic change. More insights you will find in 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐆𝐚𝐩 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 👉 https://lnkd.in/dbzjWeGE We recognise the importance of reusing waste as a resource and closing the loop in fashion. Last week, our colleage from TUTECH INNOVATION GMBH Silke Schleiff trained colleagues from the #EnterpriseEuropeNetwork on circularity and gave a presentation on our project. Stay tuned, as in the coming months we will be showcasing SMEs that have received grants through our project and implemented circular strategies in their companies. ♻️ Case study on circular economy solutions: KINOTEHNIK Project name: Exploring Circular Economy Solutions for LED Lighting Fixtures💡 Challenge: KINOTEHNIK faced the challenge of evaluating the feasibility of upcycling Practilite 602 and 604 LED lighting fixtures into next-generation models (Practilite 632/634). Key difficulties: 🟠 Logistical complexity: High costs associated with long-distance shipping and labor-intensive refurbishment processes, especially in the U.S. 🟠 Market resistance: Low customer and distributor interest in upcycled products due to perceived risks and lack of incentives. 🟠 Limited awareness: Sustainability initiatives, such as upcycling, lacked visibility in the broadcast and film lighting market. Circular economy strategies/business model implemented: 🟢 Shifting focus: Kinotehnik transitioned from a broad upcycling initiative to a more practical approach integrating upcycling into routine maintenance. 🟢 Resource reuse: The strategy relies on reusing 75% of mechanical components and almost 100% of PCBs, reducing the need for new materials. 🟢 Localized refurbishment: Partnering with distributors to manage refurbishments locally, minimizing transport-related costs and environmental impact. 🟢 Sustainability-driven customer incentives: Offering discounts and extended warranties to encourage customer adoption of upcycled solutions. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/gPsGh6Nx

Transitioning to a circular economy isn’t just about rethinking resources - it’s about managing information. Resources without identity often end up as waste. By assigning goods with the right information, tracking them, and transferring this data effectively, we unlock their full potential. The more value we aim to create, the more robust our information systems must be. 📅 Join our webinar to explore how cutting-edge technologies - like Artificial Intelligence, visual tracking systems, the Internet of Things, and GS1 standards - can drive this transformation. From day one of a product’s lifecycle, providing key information is essential to: ✔️ Optimise resource use ✔️ Enable identification and tracking ✔️ Facilitate stakeholder collaboration ✔️ Support better design, production, and reuse processes By embedding smarter information flows into business operations, companies can enhance their competitiveness and reclaim untapped economic value that would otherwise be wasted. 🗣️ Our speakers: Hubert Bukowski from Instytut Innowacji i Odpowiedzialnego Rozwoju INNOWO, Anna Walkowska from ProperGate and Magdalena Fertsch-Slek from GS1 Polska 🗓️ 3rd December 2024 ⏱️ 10.00-12.00 CET 📍 ZOOM platform Register to secure your spot 👉 https://lnkd.in/d2cTu7hs #Up2Circ #circulareconomy #AI #digitalisation #IoT
