🇪🇺 Toward a Stronger Europe: Revisiting the Rome Manifesto 🌍 🗣️Mihalis Panayiotakis: The Rome Manifesto has been a valuable starting point in envisioning a federal European Union, and Together for Europe – Movement for the European Federal Union has adopted it as our foundation. However, written seven years ago, the manifesto reflects a world before the crises that have since reshaped Europe and the globe. From today’s perspective, it falls short of true federalism. Most notably, its rejection of a fiscal union contradicts the very principles of federal governance, leaving member states vulnerable to potential bankruptcy—a hallmark of the intergovernmentalism it seeks to replace. We must also question its prioritization of competences and governance structures. Why not include guarantees for minimum living standards or a pan-European health system? Why not explore alternative models for electing a European Senate? These shortcomings highlight the need for refinement and deeper discussion. It’s time for a Rome Manifesto 2.0—a roadmap for a united Europe that is democratic, resilient, and truly federal. Together, we can lead this conversation and shape the future of Europe. We’re proposing a Federal Union—a system with clearly defined powers and responsibilities through a binding constitution. This new framework would ensure: ✅ Greater transparency and accountability ✅ Clear separations of powers between the Union and its member states ✅ No opt-outs for member states—ensuring uniform compliance ✅ Close associations with non-ratifying countries 🎯  The goal is to create a more integrated and democratic Europe that can effectively respond to global challenges.
