We are pleased to share the inspiring story of medical virologist Marycelin Baba, an alumna of our PhD fellowship programme, who helped lead the successful effort to eradicate polio in Nigeria while also pushing for greater surveillance of arboviruses like dengue, West Nile, and yellow fever. #womeninscience #womeninSTEM #virology

The OWSD community continues to grow! Welcome to the 56th OWSD National Chapter: Cuba! 🇨🇺 . Hosted at the Cuban Academy of Sciences, this chapter was one of the first OWSD National Chapters ever established. It has now been reactivated after several years of inactivity, thanks to the initiative of local scientists and members of the Cuban diaspora.

🌍✨ OWSD at the Continental Conference on Transforming STEM in Africa! From November 26-28, 2024, OWSD participated in the Continental Conference on Transforming Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in Africa, organized by UNESCO and the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. OWSD brought the organization’s 30+ years of experience in supporting women scientists in developing countries, contributing to a key discussion on advancing gender equality and inclusion in STEM by tackling the root causes of gender gaps, stereotypes, and biases. The goal? To create a more inclusive and equitable STEM ecosystem and establish networks of prominent women in STEM to mentor and inspire the next generation. The conference provided valuable insights and will contribute to high-level recommendations aimed at fostering gender equality in STEM. It also offered a great opportunity to strengthen partnerships with like-minded institutions and explore collaboration with other Italian actors. Furthermore, OWSDS met with the Italian Permanent Representative to the African Union, Maurizio Busanelli, and the Italian Scientific Attaché, Prof. Laura Pacifici Noja, to discuss further initiatives for promoting the role of women scientists in Africa.
