Our very own Digital Defender Stella is back as a guest at Angeline Corvaglia's podcast Digital Dominoes! This time she is talking about why it's so hard for her to stop watching when she is online and learning some tips from Angeline about how she can help herself and others when they get very emotional when it's time to put down their devices. It's so refreshing to hear about these topics from a young digital defender! #digitalcitizenship #phoneaddiction #awarenessmatters https://lnkd.in/du6arYSV

We will continue to try and fill the gap in terms of awareness and education, but the companies themselves really do need to be caring more about the actual people on the other end of their technological advances
Data Girl and Friends | Digital Defender Parent | Empower Young People with Online Safety and AI Awareness
Today my feed is full of announcements and excitement about advances in AI by Google, Open AI, and xAI. I just can't bring myself to be excited about all of this. because awareness and education is light years behind where it needs to be and companies seem you think that this is someone else's problem...🤷 because all of this technology is causing real harms and it looks like we are just supposed to accept that this will somehow solve itself and that this kind of collateral damage is just a necessary evil. (see lawsuit filed by Laura Marquez-Garrett about Character AI advising a teen to kill his parents - and note Google's role) because Sam Altman was quoted by CNN as saying this “even if we can make that (super-intelligent model) technically safe, which I assume we’ll figure out, we are going to have to have some faith in our governments… There is going to have to be global coordination… I assume we’ll rise to the occasion, but it seems challenging.” Build first, blindly hope it'll somehow be safe? Faith in government? Global coordination? That's always worked out in the past, why shouldn't it now, right? 🤯 Don't let me forget to add 60 minutes' completely 1-sided reporting on Khanmingo. I'm so sick and tired of these people and organizations who don't take full responsibility for what they are doing. ...and the hype machine that doesn't stop to ask "what could be the unintended consequences of what's going on?" Ugh! #responsibletech #thefutureofai #unintendedconsequences

It's so eye-opening to hear from parents about the moment they went from not having a strong opinion about their children's online footprint to becoming privacy champions. Hopefully listening to their stories will be a trigger for other people to find out how their children's digital identities are being protected when they are using tools that are outside of their parents' control.
Data Girl and Friends | Digital Defender Parent | Empower Young People with Online Safety and AI Awareness
Inspired by Heidi Saas's mission to stop unnecessary data collection by edtech companies, I recently offered to help the cause by working on an information campaign on the topic. I've teamed up with Plunk Foundation and Jesper Graugaard to make this information campaign happen. The goal? Get more people to understand why they need to care more about data sharing among kids through apps and devices in schools. The challenge? Getting people to care about privacy and data sharing in general. After thinking, reading, and listening, I realized the thing that touched me the most was hearing the story about how other parents realized they needed to pay more attention. We want to motivate people to ask questions about how their children's privacy is handled and, therefore, help schools protect kids' digital identities (after all, tech is advancing at light speed, and schools' available resources are usually going in the opposite direction. The campaign will include interviews with privacy parents from around the globe for the next 3 months, culminating in a focus session at the SHIELD Global Online Safety Conference in February 2025. For the next three months, we are going to be spending quite a bit of time helping our digital navigators be more aware of the privacy implications of the use of technology at school. Even in an environment like school, where it's important to be respectful and trusting, it's crucial to question authority when necessary. When the school is using technology, this means students must have the courage to ask the right questions to make sure their data is being treated like the treasure that it is for them. We're kicking this topic off with an article that explains to our digital navigators how and why they should care about how secure their personal info is when they are using school apps and devices! https://lnkd.in/d_ZnZ2sA

This week's episode of Bytes of Digital Adventures explores the world of social media in the form of a magical, enchanting maze that soon shows its dark sides. You can listen to it here: https://lnkd.in/da6HE594 The story follows Aisha, a 10-year-old girl who first enjoys the fun but soon realizes that it's not all fun and games and gets herself out. We do think it's a shame that we need to be writing stories about social media for 10-year-olds, but even if they aren't on it themselves, they will constantly see others who are. With the help of this story, parents can talk through the different aspects of being on social media. #kidsandsocialmedia #awarenessmatters #digitalcitizenship

Happy Thanksgiving from us at Data Girl and Friends! It's been a year since we first published "The Thankfulness App," and we've given it a bit of a makeover. Although we talk a lot about the risks of tech, we also know that tech can (and should!) be used for good. Here's to another year, and so many things to be thankful for! #thankful #techforgood https://lnkd.in/dKTuf3SQ
