I don't buy into Klarna's AI transformation story. It feels a bit too, say, fairy-tale-like. Klarna, recently made the news again for ending their fancy SaaS subscriptions in favor of AI-accelerated software development. I've had the "pleasure" of dealing with Klarna AI, and while it's pretty grounded, it's no Robochat-007 they make it sound. AI-generated code, more often than not, slows down the releases rather than accelerating it. Then there is a whole lot of compliance, security, and other mumbo jumbo. I wonder what mystical OpenAI models they have that other lesser mortals don't! Klarna has an IPO on the horizon, and this whole thing feels like a carefully staged PR stunt. By playing the AI card, they look like tech pioneers to future investors. Suddenly, they can justify what really seems like an after-effect of a massive drop in valuation due to overspending, interest rates, and competition. Meanwhile, the customers! Huh, what about them? They should be happy that Klarna AI Bot can tackle their Python questions. Jeez, some people just can’t be pleased, can they? --------------------- Hi, I am Maheep. What do more than 500 Nordic CMOs think of loyalty and MarTech?  The yearly highly anticipated Nordic CMO Survey 2024 is here. And what are the key findings for our business and our market? Here is our list of valuable insights:     🧲 A key take-away is that successful marketers still focus on analytics and insights, but on top of that have added a strong push for branding and MarTech, together with improving internal skills and relying on creative concepts and campaigns.  🧲 Both B2C and B2B believe that Marketing Automation will be more important: Up nearly 20 % combined since last year.    🧲 The same result goes for the importance of loyalty programs. B2C and B2B think loyalty programs are vital in the marketing mix for future growth.  🧲 So what about newsletters? They are of course bread and butter for CMOs. €8 million funding round backs Icelandic startup’s growth in passenger disruption solutions Reykjavik-based AviLabs, the creator of Plan3, has secured an €8 million investment round led by Frumtak Ventures, with continued support from existing investor Brunnur Ventures. The company’s technology, Plan3, focuses on managing airline passenger disruptions by providing automated and personalized solutions to handle issues such as delays and cancellations. Good design can't fix a poor product. But it can multiply a product that's working. This perfectly applies to our company LearnQ. We're now doing 3 times what we did last year. That's huge, right? It all started in February. We launched a new version of our product. Not just any version. A beautifully designed one. Our UI?  It's now eye-catching and brings core AI features to the front. Our UX?  Makes users’ lives easy by bringing features users want to front and center. Our graphs?  They're not just data anymore. They're visual stories. This version was the boost we needed.  It increased the desirability of the product in sales calls. It turned "maybe" into a "must-have". What's your experience with design? AI is disrupting agency-client relationships. What’s your plan? I listened to an interesting podcast interview with Klarna's CEO about AI-driven cost cutting. The story: Klarna built in-house AI tools for customer service that eliminated the equivalent of 700 human agents. That's a $40 million annual cost reduction for Klarna. Here's the twist: Klarna doesn't directly employ these agents. They use outsourced customer service vendors. One of these vendors lost over a billion dollars in market cap when Klarna tweeted about this cost reduction. Why it matters: AI is just starting to redefine the relationship between agencies and brands. This isn't just about customer service. It's a wake-up call for all agencies. I realized that we need to proactively integrate AI into our services delivery before our clients do it themselves. What we're doing: At Fire&Spark, we are experimenting with AI for internal processes. We are automating client onboarding processes, sales follow-up, identifying gaps in strategies, generating project plans, generating niche cold outreach campaigns from the insights in our proposals, align scopes with client goals and generating one page web apps. I'm most excited about our efforts to build personas for our client account contacts. We will use these personas to suggest revisions/additions to client emails and deliverables before we send them. A reflection on why Klarna changes the strategy for payments to “Pay now”, instead of the winning concept “Buy now pay later” (BNPL) and why this is a logic step forward. ℹ Yesterday David Fock, Chief Product Officer at Klarna, stated in an interview in Svenska Dagbladet that Klarna changes the strategy and would like the customers to “pay now”, and only sometimes use the function of “pay later”. David Fock states that this will possibly lower the credit loss levels (see link in comment). 🔎 Klarna has a unique position and are with the new strategy creating new customers behaviour that is transforming the concept of embedded payments. This may seem like strange strategy, since the BNPL is one of the core offer that Klarna has, but you will have to understand this: ✅ The cost: To lend money to all purchases, is a huge cost. The customers that are paying at the first due date are not paying enough to cover the credit cost. ✅ The average risk: To lend money always includes a credit risk. And that risk will on average be lower, if most transactions are paid up front. This is also a reason for the statement that the credit losses will be lower, since on average there will be more customers paying up front. ✅ The image: Klarna is moving from a credit institute to a shopping experience solution. Previously this year they sold their check-out to Kustom. The focus is clearly on making the best shopping journeys with AI-functionality to increase the customer experience. And with Klarna's new cashback-program there will be even more focus on creating loyalty towards their customers and this will also strengthen the partnerships they are building with the retailers. There are similarities to a coalition program, and this will have a lock-in effect of the customers as well as the partners to Klarna. ✅ Additional data: More transactions mean an opportunity to reach new customer segments and gather even more data from the purchases. Today’s 85M customers and 2M transactions each day from 500K merchants will increase in the future and Klarna will hold even more information of customers and their transactions. 🎯Klarna is creating a unique loyalty program, with both end-users and partners. I admire the huge database that Klarna is building with millions of purchase transactions and the insights they can make of the end-users' purchase behaviour. 🎯Klarna is also twisting the concept of Embedded Payments to not start the journey at the partners’ shops only, but to be an important player from the start of the shopping process. And instead of asking partners if they would like to use Klarna, it is the opposite way around – partners are asking to be a part of Klarna’s customer journey. Bad positioning = bad brand. I used to think that if I just built a great product, people would come. I thought that if I just had a great website and a great logo, people would come. But I was wrong. I built a great product, but no one came. I had a great website and a great logo, but no one bought it. I realized that it wasn't enough to just have a great product, a great website, or a great sales pitch. I needed to have a great offer and strong positioning: - something that people actually wanted - something that people actually needed - something that people would pay for And once I figured that out, everything changed. I started getting leads. I started getting customers. I started growing my startup. And it all started with improving my positioning and offer. So if you want to build a personal brand that generates leads, then improve your positioning. Because a bad offer = bad brand. P.S.
