Saanjh Balpande is a high schooler passionate about community building and tech. As Founder of The Horizons and Director of Tech at STEMpulse, she’s driven to connect youth in STEM. Her AI-based FabLab tool helps children learn electronics safely, all while she expresses her creativity through art and writing. I'm thrilled to write about my project SIGNOLOGY for the Codeavour 5.0, under the theme quality education! Both my grandparents are deaf and mute, so growing up, I witnessed firsthand the challenges they faced. My grandfather would bring a newspaper to my mom for her to sign and explain, as he could read the letters but didn’t grasp their meaning. It’s similar to me trying to read in French. This highlights a significant barrier in the deaf community—a challenge in reading and education despite being literate. More than seven hundred million people worldwide are deaf, and over 80% of them live in developing or underdeveloped countries. Many of them, like my grandfather, are placed in specialized schools with limited resources and few educational opportunities. His school, designed for “otherness,” prepared students for a future of predictable routines in jobs like carpentry, sewing, and shoemaking. Silence became not just a language but a limitation. A disability. Deafness is simply a sensory difference—it only becomes a disability when the educational system fails both the child and their family. This is the reason I created SIGNOLOGY. With SIGNOLOGY, the camera scans the page analyzes it and translates full sentences, ensuring contextual accuracy. Imagine a deaf reader navigating a page, or even a whole book, without needing someone to explain the words. For us, it's just reading; for them, it's empowerment. For this project, I used PictoBlox, a visual programming platform based on Scratch. It made building my app accessible and quick, allowing me to focus on my core idea of helping the deaf community access education. I developed a prototype for SIGNOLOGY that scans text using the camera and translates it into sign language. The key challenge was ensuring the translation was context-sensitive, requiring machine learning to understand sentence structure rather than just individual words. During development, I faced challenges with translating complex sentences. However, by using PictoBlox’s library of extensions, I integrated computer vision to capture text from images and motion-sensing tools to enhance the avatar's sign language interaction. Winning the consolation prize for SIGNOLOGY amongst 200 teams from 18 countries was an unforgettable achievement! It validated my belief in this project, proving that technology can make a real difference in people’s lives. I am incredibly proud of how far the project has come, and I hope to continue working on it to expand its capabilities.
