Fundraising challenges in India - an India story that's not that promising VC Firms - need startups to dematerialise shares before wiring funds NSDL office - we haven't processed applications of Aug yet. We also have a priority list to process for larger companies first. Irony - Younger stage companies can't wait for such bottlenecks while raising small, early rounds but are being made to wait the most, thanks to the system. I can't believe an org like NSDL can't have separate teams looking at applications for startups of different market cap ranges. While every policy rolled out comes with a mandatory ask, our govt org systems should work more towards making bureaucracy more startup friendly. As of now, as I speak with founders, raising small rounds is becoming a herculean task.

Hey everyone, I know it’s been a while since my last post about looking for a few Indian Web3 startups that want to raise funds. These things take time, so feel free to reach out if you want to know whether investors are interested in your proposals. DM me, and I’ll give you feedback if it’s a “no” for now. In this post, I want to dive into why many Indian Web3 startups struggle. These insights come from the decks and proposals you sent me. My goal isn’t to discourage anyone but be real about what’s lacking. 1. Fake it till you make it syndrome - Many founders think that partnerships or media buzz will automatically lead to success. Sure, it grabs attention on social media for a bit, but that doesn’t mean you have a solid product or business plan. When talking about partnerships, skip the fluff about how amazing your partner is. Instead, tell us how you’re leveraging those connections or what business you’ve generated from them. Saying “I’m talking to so & so investor” is not a winning strategy; it just makes new investors sit around waiting for your “so & so investor” to commit. 2. Wrong set of Advisors/Partnerships - The Web3 space is full of people eager to advise for a slice of your tokens. Sounds harmless, right? Nope. Investors want Advisors/Mentors who can add real value—like market expertise, helping with compliance, or genuinely bringing investment. Your advisor shouldn’t just be another generalist; you’ve already got that covered as the future CEO. You need real expertise to strengthen your team, not more fluff. Be very clear on "how" or "in what ways" your Advisor/Mentor/Partner are helping you. 3. No GTM and/or execution strategy - Rome wasn’t built in a day. But it didn’t happen without solid strategy and execution. Many of you seem to have no execution strategy at all. You’re waiting for the market to “discover” your amazing product and hoping for a miracle. Get comfortable questioning your ideas; ask yourself, what if this doesn’t work? What if your plan has flaws? Are you okay with pivoting? I’m not saying you need all the answers in your pitch deck, but your Go To Market or execution strategy shouldn’t feel like a copy of someone else’s work. Some of you have your MVP ready but haven’t tested it among yourselves! A few of you have ten products, but no clear direction or standout product, which leads to confusion. Most of your ideas lack a moat—explain why you’re the right fit for this idea and why it’s hard to copy. These are some thoughts I gathered while reviewing your decks, and they’re just general feedback. To be clear: I made mistakes in my own company. But since I had the chance to share insights with my network, I’m doing what I can because I believe entrepreneurship is a gift, and we need strong inspiration for Web3 to thrive. While the budget brought some positive news for the broader tech ecosystem, the crypto community had mixed reactions. 🔍 Key Takeaways: Crypto Taxation Unchanged: The much-debated crypto tax rules remain unchanged. The 30% tax on gains from virtual digital assets (VDAs) and the 1% TDS on transactions continue to be in effect. Capital Gains Tax Adjustments: The increase in long-term capital gains tax from 10% to 12.5% and short-term capital gains tax from 15% to 20% has caused disappointment among the middle class. Angel Tax Abolished: A significant win for the startup ecosystem is the abolition of the angel tax for all classes of investors. This move is expected to bolster the Indian tech startup scene, especially in the web3 sector. One significant advancement in the new GPT-4o model that’s not being talked about enough is the improvement in the performance on non-English languages, especially Indic languages. A more efficient tokenizer means lesser tokens, which leads to reduced costs and latency. Opens up a lot of use cases for the Indian context.

PayPal is moving their stablecoin to Solana. But is this the best move? Let’s take a look at the brighter sides first: 1. Faster & cheaper: → Sending PYUSD might be quicker & less expensive. 2. More choice: → PYUSD on multiple platforms gives more options for money. 3. Crypto gains traction: → PayPal is a big name. → Using crypto is a good sign for its future. But, I believe there are a few hurdles as well: 1. Lack of awareness: → Sheraz Shere from Solana Foundation pointed: → Many still aren't familiar with crypto payments yet. 2.Financial leaders need education: → Banks might need some more education of crypto. → Then only they can fully embrace it. 3. Noise vs underlying technology: → Letting the buzz of certain cryptos like BTC overshadow its potential. → The potential lies in the technology itself (like Solana's speed). Overall, this seems like a positive step. However, education and building trust with traditional finance will be key. What are your thoughts about it?

Interacting with Web3 in India is a nightmare 😩 (Poor WazirX support and regulatory blockages below) I've been working in the Web3 world for the last 5 yrs now and have seen the Indian landscape evolving rapidly, definitely more people have onboarded the bus but the journey is uncertain here Like every other working individual in Web3, I am paid in Crypto and often transact in Crypto which is perfectly fine for me unless the Indian regulations parted ways with Web3 exchanges and projects here Until 2022: → I'd receive my salary in my WazirX wallet → I'd sell it on the exchange for little to no fees, no TDS, no tax and instant withdrawals → The withdrawal money would hit my bank account in less than 10 minutes and wallah, it was a WIN! Now: → I get the same salary in Binance and since it is banned in India, I cannot execute a P2P order easily → I had to move the funds to a CEX (mostly WazirX) while facing a transfer fee → For some reason, WazirX has now disabled P2P withdrawal as well and I'm left with the only option to sell in spot trade → Spot trade comes with 1% TDS, transaction fees, then later Rs. 25 of withdrawal fees and you won't be able to withdraw more than 1 lac at a time In the end, I always face 4k-5k of loss among all of these silly charges in receiving my salary to my bank account This time I am pissed at the WazirX support as there is no direct way to get in touch with the team, you keep talking to bots and no email/mobile no. provided It is getting more and more tough to transact in crypto if you are India at the expense of time, energy and money for every single transaction made Please suggest alternatives to dodge all of this nonsense and easily withdraw crypto to fiat 🙏 Keep up with #mehta_and_more for more such #web3 content

The Indian crypto market is experiencing a boom. Its projected revenue for 2024 is $343.5 million which is an impressive annual growth rate of nearly 8%.  However, sophisticated fraudsters pose a significant challenge, creating a trust deficit within the industry. So, how can crypto players navigate this exciting yet challenging landscape? Prioritising robust security measures like KYC/AML and data protection, is a given. But RegTech offers an additional powerful arsenal of tools to combat fraud: 1. Blockchain analysis to track suspicious transactions 2. Transaction monitoring to detect money laundering 3. Biometric authentication for secure user verification 4. Behavioural analytics to identify potential fraudsters 5.
