Can quick commerce for Prescription Medicines finally take off? Swiggy’s foray into 10 min Rx medicine delivery in partnership with Pharmeasy could turn out to be a game changer for both companies. More importantly, this could be the first structured attempt to bring #medicine delivery from few hours/next day down to 10 min q-com umbrella First up, what’s in it for each partner: For #Pharmeasy, 10 min delivery against its current 24-48 hours timeline is a huge differentiator against competitors like #Tata1Mg or #Apollo247 and could allow it to regain market share that dropped from >30% in late 2022 to 15% in late 2023 For #Swiggy #Instamart, this is an entry into a new segment that allows cart enrichment to push up average order values and also offers a play in a more profitable #pharmacy #distribution business Assumed Tech and Operational factors are at par with other online businesses, the factors that uniquely need to be solved for online pharmacy business are Assortment, Substitution/Upselling, Frequency and size of Purchases IMO, if the model revolves around Pharmeasy installing a store within Swiggy’s dark store for Medicines then its tough to solve Assortment at scale for 10-min deliveries. It’s not that Assortment can’t be solved in a store-in-store model. But it may need a totally separate tech-stack and micro-area based intelligence around what consumers want to purchase in 10 mins and this can take months and years of intelligence to build Next issue of over-the-call #substitution or #upselling means a Dr from Pharmeasy (or swiggy) calling and asking a consumer if Brand X is not available can we deliver Brand Y. Or you may require a multivitamin M along with this medicine, so can we supply Product M alongside your order? This doesn’t happen in #quickcommerce for fmcg as it will slow down the delivery promise. So can this work for q-com Pharmacy deliveries Frequency and Order Size are major factors that may get addressed with this collaboration because q-com has reached daily order frequency and >INR 500 average order sizes For the collaboration to give a seamless experience, some questions will need to be addressed upfront like: - Between Swiggy and Pharmeasy will there be only one app in a city for medicine orders? If no then won’t Pharmeasy start losing orders to Swiggy - Unlike e-commerce, would post order tele-calling work in q-com for medicines - Is effective pricing between the two apps going to be different or same - Will Swiggy offer the entire range of medicine products that Pharmeasy will also offer in an overlapping area The collaboration does promise a lot of disruption and learnings for online pharmacy business along the way.. ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) - will this lead to another UPI moment? ABHA, launched by the Indian Government, is like a digital health passport. The vision is to have all your healthcare data (like your treatments, investigations, admissions etc.) digitally stored and linked to your ABHA ID. This has a number of benefits 1. Easy accessibility to all your health records which is a huge benefit considering our current situation that there is no interoperability between healthcare providers. 2. You have control over how you grant access to your health data to your physicians and other stakeholders. 3. In the future, high quality health data has the potential to generate innovative data-driven solutions in healthcare. There are of course the known issues around security and privacy. But I think the benefits outweigh the risks. Any Indian can in fact now create their own ABHA id using their Aadhaar cards. I definitely plan to create my own ID.
