Does the latest lull in advertising spends at IPL matches spell the death of advertising? This question is natural given how digital marketing and ad blocks have become the norm in the manner we consume content. Every website and OTT platform today is filled with advertisements for products irrespective of whether it serves any purpose for the consumer, pushing them to spend money to choose ad-free content. But, if that happens, how will brands showcase their products?   Consider this. It has been reported that the percentage of money being spent on advertising during the IPL matches has gone down in 2024. This muted contribution to ad spends is attributed to the “global slowdown in VC funding and a cautionary approach adopted by global tech companies who have decided to exercise caution.” Now, in the light of consumers getting weary and advertisers adopting a cautionary tale, I am reminded of the ad breaks on radio when we kept match scores while listening to the commentary in the olden times. During these breaks, we listened to ads like “Buland Bharat Ki Buland Tasveer” and it almost always brought a smile to the face. As someone who lives, breathes, and works in advertising, I am quite hopeful about the future of advertising. Just last week, McDonald's came up with a campaign in Netherlands, where blank billboards were set up in the open. What was interesting was that once you reached near the billboard, you could feel a whiff of the McDonald’s fries, sparking a desire to go buy it for yourself. This idea, albeit brilliant, is not a novel concept and we have seen perfume brands and soap companies play upon the olfactory senses of customers. It shows that we must keep coming up with new ways to showcase our stuff. The IPL lull, meanwhile, is a momentary pause, and will pick up in the latter half when more engaging matches are planned. It is expected that India’s television and digital video revenues will skyrocket to a staggering $17 billion by 2028. ICYMI: Reliance Industries Limited and Disney+ Hotstar are confirmed for a merger following the approval of India's MIB and CCI. This merger is set to create India's largest media conglomerate of Viacom18 Media Private Limited and Disney Star at a combined valuation of ₹70,000 cr or $8.5 billion. Aside from the lack of clarity regarding overlapping regional channels and operational structure, there are concerns that this merger is dangerously monopolistic in nature, especially in the sports broadcasting sector - Viacom 18 and Disney have exclusive streaming rights for Indian Premier League India and ICC matches respectively. Last year, Disney Hotstar lost an estimated 2.8 million subscribers in Q4, largely owing to a price hike for their streaming subscriptions and Viacom18 taking over IPL streaming rights. With this merger, the duo's pricing power could be largely inelastic, raising the question of how the average consumer will be impacted, particularly in a cricket-obsessed market like India. The CCI is said to be closely monitoring how this merger changes market practices in India. Stress ! This is an honest conversation I had with Sanjay Arora, may be a couple of months after I joined ANTS Digital Pvt. Ltd. In 2021 The agency life when viewed from the positive prism is lively, lovely, exciting, gives you so many opportunities which are versatile. The other way or when viewed from a less positive prism is it’s #stressful to deal with so many clients. Everyday is a new adventure, there is a new problem statement, there are multiple deliverables. Your brain needs to switch from one brand to another and there is internal coordination and client expectation management. I was a little overwhelmed with too many things at a time. So, coming back to the question I asked Sanjay - how do you deal with this stress? He said, #DeliveringEachDay is the only thing we can do to avoid stress. Stress emanates from #overthinking about something that is actually easier to execute. Thinking a lot instead of executing. Lack of #Planning. #Procrastination #LackofDeepFocus The universities teach the subject but these are soft skills one needs to build over time. Not giving a sermon but I had been a person with lot of stress for many years. I used to think a lot about what all could go wrong. But over years I only realised that you have to do what you can do within your capability, by giving your 100%. Beyond that it’s not in your purview to worry about the result. Again, simple truth from #Bhagawadgita. It doesn’t say that do not act. It says act to best of your capacity, but do not stress over outcome. Stress is often made in mind! I am still not 100% stress free but I am definitely better off - in terms of planning, giving my best, being focused and thinking less about outcomes. To be honest, clients expect sincere efforts. They help and pitch in too to make things work. Making a brand work is not just upon the agency it’s upon the client too. Clients are not looking for magicians, they are looking for sincere people who can share their vision and bring their vision alive in the best possible manner!

As a reporter with Asia Business News-Dow Jones and as a public health advocacy expert doing outreach campaigns for The Global Fund I found that the role of Indian generics was pivotal in affordable HIV/AIDS treatment.
