The FSSAI Publication’s new shelf-life guidelines are a pivotal moment for India’s e-commerce food industry. By mandating that products retain 30%-45% of their shelf life upon delivery, the emphasis shifts to stricter FEFO (First Expiry, First Out) compliance. Brands are now responsible for ensuring that goods arriving at warehouses have at least 85%-90% of their shelf life intact, driving a significant change in operational workflows. This regulation doesn’t just enforce compliance—it demands accountability. Whether it’s the brand or the platform selling the products, someone must take ownership. Additionally, it highlights the growing need for transparency across the supply chain, ensuring traceability and consumer trust. For #3PL providers in India, this is a moment of reckoning. It’s not just about moving goods anymore—it’s about maintaining rigorous standards of safety and quality. From segregating food and non-food items to ensuring optimal storage and hygiene, the bar has been raised. Recent issues in dark stores further underscore the importance of upholding food safety throughout storage and transit and how to stop pilferage. While these changes present challenges, they also inspire innovation and collaboration. This is an opportunity for stakeholders to harness technology, from advanced warehouse management systems to real-time tracking, to enhance supply chain efficiency. As a 3PL leader, I see this as a chance to transform compliance into a competitive advantage.
