Something to be disappointed on 2024 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), where India stands out of 180 countries - 1. 3rd largest emitter of GHG 2. 177th position on air quality and projected emissions due to heavy reliance on coal 3. 178th position on biodiversity due to restricted access to information database 4. On a brighter note, 133rd position on climate change due to significant investments in renewable energy and its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. 🌍 Hyderabad (17/10/2024) - Join Us for a Workshop on Compliance mechanism under the Indian Carbon Market! 🌍 For Industries and Accredited Carbon Verification Agencies. India is making strides towards global climate goals with its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). To support these efforts, the government has introduced the Indian Carbon Market (ICM) framework, aimed at decarbonizing the economy through carbon credit trading. The Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, formalized in 2023, sets specific GHG Emission Intensity (GEI) targets for registered entities, allowing those who exceed these targets to earn Carbon Credit Certificates. To help stakeholders navigate the compliance mechanism, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is organizing a series of capacity-building workshops across India. 🚨 New population dynamics analysis for the #KeralaLandslides as of August 7th from the CrisisReady team. ⚠️ Following devastating landslides overnight on July 30th due to heavy rainfall in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India at least 413 people have been killed and nearly 200 are still reported missing. Thousands have been displaced to nearby areas. 👫 Based on data from Data for Good at Meta, as of the evening of August 7th the population of the Vellarimala area which was principally affected by the landslides remains significantly below the pre-event 90 day baseline, but daytime population in this area has increased to over 2 standard deviations above baseline, which on average represents more than a 40% increase. Daily variances are likely tied to the relief effort. 👉 Kottappadi, Kalpetta, Thrikkaipatta, and Muppainad remain above baseline by a range of 1 to 2 standard deviations relative to baseline, representing a range of 5% to 35%. 👉 The areas of Muttil North and South are slightly above baseline at night and slightly below during the day. Kerala SAPCC 2023-2030 is one of the perfect blend of climate science, Kerala Government proactive measure and in house capacity building. A core group of 👥 220 nodal officers from 91 sectoral stakeholder departments through three tiers of consultation sessions has helped to devise this Action Plan. Key Insights: 🌡 Projections show a temperature increase of 1°C to 2°C under future scenarios. 💰Finance: Mitigation strategies need INR 52,238 Crore; adaptation requires INR 38,407 Crore. 🗺 Key vulnerabilities were identified in districts like Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Alappuzha. 🚗 Mitigation Strategies (2023-30) ▶ Energy efficiency improvements ▶Installation of renewable energy projects ▶Increased adoption of Electric Vehicles ▶Upgrading Transmission and Distribution infrastructure These efforts aim to avoid ~57000 ktCO2 by 2030, with an investment of INR 52,238 Crore. Kerala’s share is about 5%, with the Central Government covering 23%. 🌾 Adaptation Strategies Focused on enhancing climate resilience in agriculture, improving production practices, and building capacities of supporting institutions. Key areas include livestock, coastal fisheries, forests, health, and water resources. 📑 Why does it stand out? ▶Assessed district vulnerability across 19 parameters and classify risk levels(high-low). ▶Designed sector-specific adaptation interventions with annual budgets until 2030. ▶Dedicated capacities through dedicated bodies like the Chief Minister’s Governing Council, State Climate Change Cell, Climate Change Working Groups, District Climate Change Cells, and Sectoral Climate Change Cells.
