Hallmark of a well diversified portfolio: 1. Not all parts of portfolio will perform at the same time. 2. Your aggregate portfolio will always underperform the hottest sector in the market. In the last 3-4 years, we have seen: 1. Nifty outperform Nasdaq and S&P 2. Nasdaq outperform Nifty 3. S&P outperforming Nasdaq on the way down 4. Nasdaq outperforming S&P and Nifty on the way up 5. Small-mid cap outperforming large cap 6. Large cap outperforming small-mid cap and now China which was underperforming everything since last 3 years has suddenly bounced back when everything else seems to be losing steam. Don't overanalyse when one part of the portfolio underperforms which was built while keeping diversification in mind. Just follow the basic practices of personal investing: 1. Asset Allocation 2. Implications Of Bond Yields On The Capital Market In the recent times, as per RBI website data, the yields on Govt securities are trending in G Secs market as follows : 7.10% GS 2034 : 7.0125% 7.18% GS 2033 : 7.0615% 7.04% GS 2029 :7.0180% 7.37% GS 2028 : 7.0208% 7.02% GS 2027 : 6.9918% 7.33% GS 2026 : 6.9870% 91 days T Bills : 6.8370% 182 days TBills : 6.9925% 364 days T Bills : 7.0111% From the above data, we find that the yields on long term G Secs are falling sharply and yields on short term G secs are rising , which will have serious implications on the cost of short term debt that the corporates will raise for capital needs and the prices of stocks in which investors would like to invest. Time and again a movement in bond yields has impacted the capital markets. More often than not, the two move in opposite directions. The impact and the relationship can be witnessed across borders as well. Bond yields are the interest rates paid by bonds. They refer to the amount of money a bond pays out to its holder as interest each year. The higher the yield, the higher is the amount of money you get back from your investment in bonds. If you have invested in a bond with a lower yield, you will receive less money than if you had invested in one with a higher yield. 🟦 How Bond Yields Impact On The Capital Market? 1️⃣ Bond Yield And Cost Of Capital Bond yields are a key factor in determining the cost of capital for companies and investors. Corporate bond yields are determined by the interest rates that the government pay on bonds, which are typically higher than the interest rates paid on government securities. Since most bonds have fixed interest rates and do not adjust based on inflation, they suffer from what is known as "negative real yield," meaning they lose value over time. 2️⃣ Rise In Opportunity Cost If bond yields go up high enough to beat the returns from stocks, the opportunity cost of investing in stocks goes up and may become less attractive. When one investment opportunity becomes more attractive, if you invest in any other non-attractive product, you are basically losing out on the opportunity to get better returns and in some way, paying an opportunity cost. 3️⃣ Rising Bond Yields Attract Foreign Funds If bond yields go up, it makes the debt market more attractive. If Indian bond yields, at a certain time, are offering better yields than the global market, it attracts global investors to invest in the Indian debt than in the global debt. Again, if the debt market looks more attractive than equities, foreign institutional investors flows will be bent towards equities. The concept of opportunity cost comes into play the role again.
