Rural poverty in India is a complex issue, and several socioeconomic factors contribute to it. The key determinants include: #Dependency #Ratio Households with a higher dependency ratio, meaning more non-working members, are more likely to be poor * #Education Lower levels of education, particularly years of schooling, significantly impact #poverty levels -* #Occupation* #Engagement in low-paying or unstable occupations contributes to poverty #Gender of Household Head Female-headed households are more vulnerable to poverty Per #Capita Monthly Income Lower income levels directly affect poverty status #Access to #Credit Limited access to credit and financial services exacerbates poverty - #Caste and #Tribe Poverty is disproportionately high among certain caste and tribe groups #Health and #Education Limited access to quality healthcare and education perpetuates poverty #Geographical #Location Remote or resource-scarce areas face unique challenges These factors intertwine, creating a poverty trap that's difficult to escape. For instance, limited #education options lead to lower-paying #jobs, reducing income and access to #credit, #healthcare, and #education. The 2024 #Global #Multidimensional #Poverty #Index report highlights that 84% of the world's poor live in rural areas, with India being one of the countries with the largest number of poor individuals. Addressing rural poverty requires a multifaceted approach, incorporating #education, #economic #empowerment, and social inclusion strategies. Reforming #policies and #programs, such as those supported by the UNAccc (UNITY OF NATIONS ACTION FOR CLIMATE CHANGE COUNCIL) , can play a crucial role in addressing these #socioeconomic determinants. Some potential solutions include: Improving Access to Education and Healthcare Investing in #qualityeducation and healthcare services in rural areas. #Economic #Empowerment Providing training, credit, and livelihood opportunities for rural households. #Social #Inclusion Addressing caste and tribe disparities through targeted programs. #Infrastructure #Development Enhancing rural infrastructure to facilitate access to markets and services. Caritas India has launched Global Programme’s balanced diet campaign in schools to tackle some of Odisha’s highest malnourishment rates among young children. Among the tribal-dominated districts, 39.8 per cent of children under five years are suffering from malnutrition in Rayagada. The percentage increase has also been seen in severely wasted cases among children under the age of five. Speaking at a NewsX show Sandeep Chachra, Executive Director, ActionAid Association warned that it is easy for us in the middle classes to fix blame of pollution on farmers and workers. He goes on to underline the need to look at the complex range of issues involved. Studies show that pollution in Delhi is caused by many factors and vehicular traffic is a major issue causing 35% of the suspended particulate matter (SPM), parali or crop residue burning makes up 6-8% across the year, and in the winter months rises to some 25%. Having evidenced-based action means we need to act on all fronts to stop air pollution in our cities in North India.

Tried, tested, transformed but still To reiterate the need and relevance of Disaster Resilient & Ecologically Sustainable #Sanitation Technology (DRESST) in #riverine #flood affected/proned area, 5 #women from Naya Tola Bhishambharpur (along the banks of river #Gandak) - Manju Devi (1); Sarli Devi; Kajal Kumari; Manju Devi (2) and Saroj Devi came forward to construct Phaydemand Shauchalay (PS) (literal translation beneficial toilet) for their respective households. PS in sanitation parlance is either known as ecological sanitation (ecosan) or urine diverting dry toilet (UDDT). Since 2008, Megh Pyne Abhiyan (MPA) has been working towards making EcoSAN relevant to the flood prone areas of North Bihar. Despite going through challenging times, facing setbacks, obstacles and even deadlocks, MPA continued its efforts to popularize PS in flood affected areas. In 2016-18, MPA had undertaken work in Naya Tola Bhishambharpur, Bhagwanpur Panchayat, Nautan Block, Pashchim (West) Champaran, #Bihar to demonstrate the relevance and efficacy of PS in a riverine flood affected village. During that period, 8 PSs were constructed, involving women from all households during the implementation process. After the completion of the project, MPA led by Kumod Kumar Das periodically discussed the utility of PS with women from eight households, especially during the unprecedented floods of 2020. In the subsequent floods, similar efforts continued to monitor the functioning of all 8 PSs. This approach resulted in practical and insightful learning and helped MPA develop a road map for DRESST in the same village. After observing the functioning of eight PSs for 6 years, MPA partnered with DCB Bank to construct additional five PSSs in the village. Overall, there are 13 families in the village that have adopted and are using DRESST, of which 8 have been using it since 2018. Given the effectiveness of this toilet technology in riverine flood prone village, the demand for it is continuously increasing. It is important to mention that the DRESST project was designed and steered by Kumod Kumar Das of MPA in Naya Tola Bishambharpur, involving not only women from 5 households but also 8 women who have been using it since 2018. In the second phase of DRESST, Kumod and women from 5 households worked through identifying the space for the toilet, designing the toilet, planning its construction process, arranging finances, sourcing masons and monitoring the ongoing work. What is worrying is that despite indicators of acceptance and relevance of PS demonstrated through its use by women and families in Naya Tola Bishambharpur, sanitation think tanks, advocates, and leaders are ignoring this basic fact. At times, MPA has faced situations where the tried and tested PS, which has transformed the sanitationscape in riverine flood affected areas, has been conveniently ignored, instead a new technology has been proposed that has not even faced a single flood in North Bihar.

Give it a read! The government’s push towards digitisation banks on access to basic infrastructure like broadband. With the new Digital Bharat Nidhi Framework and the Telecommunication Act, 2023 universal access and speedy rollout of fibre is underway in the country to ensure last mile access to digital services. Our policy brief talks about the progress of Bharatnet, the government’s push for the last mile access to broadband and the challenges. 5 key policy lessons from the policy brief are: 1) Use of programmatic approach that fo uses on infrastructure provisioning, network utilisation and monetisation 2) Fosterimg flexible implementation models that are administratively coordinated and backed by financial support 3)use of combination of technologies to boost BharatNet implementation 4) strengthening project monitoring and accountability systems at the national and state level to ensure optimum utilisation of public funds and delivery of key projects out ones 5) Customise implementation for northeast states and economically weaker region I would like to thank Mansi Kedia for her unbridled support and providing valuable insights for this policy brief. The story of a village in West Bengal, looks like any other village in India, depicting a poor, hand-to-mouth situation, and a growing feeling of hopelessness in the community. A community with small land holdings, some linked with SHGs, some not, has been growing only one cash crop, because of lack of arable water during summer. Located in North Sundarban, this village has enough salty backwater, but the rain-filled arable water ponds, do not sustain long. Men are engaged in farming, and women are engaged in cattle and poultry rearing, backyard vegetable gardens, and other activities. 475 households in 5 Paras, with a population of 2850,now face a fast growing problem of labour Migration, in the race to earn more money, to cover inflation and failing crops, due to climate change. AHEAD Initiatives and their Partner CSO have done commendable work to promote backyard vegetable gardening, organic farming, seed conservation, reviving astonishing local varieties of rice, and forming open learning centres, but were struggling to create sustainable livelihoods. A 3-day GLIDE Workshop organised for the village, from 18-20 October, helped the 30 Participants, design 11 Group Livelihoods for themselves, and take back detailed Business Plans for the same. A visit to the participants of the GLIDE workshop (conducted in September), came in as a pleasant surprise, with 6 Group livelihoods started, and one already sailing on cloud nine, with an unexpected profit from the Dussehra Mela. We will share a detailed picture of all the Group livelihoods emerging from the series of 9 workshops (for AHEAD Initiatives), after December 2024.
