Recent data from the survey on AYUSH conducted by National Sample Survey Office, India reveals that 50% of Indians used AYUSH healthcare system in the last year! 🔹 AYUSH system of medicines refers to the use of one or more of the system(s) of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homeopathy 🔹 95% of rural and 96% of urban folks are aware of AYUSH traditions. 🔹 85% of rural and 86% of urban households practice Medicinal Plants/Home Remedies/Local Health Traditions. 🔹 Nearly half of rural (46%) and over half of urban (53%) individuals used AYUSH in the last year for health benefits. India's Venture Capital Ecosystem needs Maturity to deal with Deep Tech Ventures. To inculcate this step up government needs to incentives founders engaged in setting up AI Labs that focus on development of India / Asia specific models. The founders, themselves, will have to engage with VC system to make them understand the life cycle of such ventures which itself is evolving. VCs need to take cue from those markets which have already invested in such deep tech ventures and learn from them. All the stakeholders will have to come forward and make this happen if India has to capitalize on the massive opportunity to leapfrog in the world of AI enabled future.

Sova Health, a pioneering startup in gut health, has secured $1 million in a seed funding round. This round was co-led by global early-stage venture capital firms Antler, Accelerating Asia Ventures (Singapore), Practical VC (USA), and VC Grid & Venture Catalysts (India). Additional investors include Quadrant Consumer Products and Midas Capital (Baheti Family Office), along with several prominent angel investors who remain undisclosed. The newly acquired funds will be allocated to product development, enhancing Sova Health's range of gut health solutions. The startup also plans to grow its team and expand its geographical market presence. Part of the investment will be directed towards launching a clinical trial for Sova Health’s Digital Therapeutics (DTx) program, reinforcing the company’s dedication to scientific research and product effectiveness. Founded by Tanveer Singh and Max Kushnir, Sova Health addresses various gut health issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), acidity, constipation, and bloating. Fast forward to 2023, and the narrative has dramatically shifted—VC investments have plummeted by nearly 65% , with many high-profile startups falling short of their lofty promises. What went wrong? As someone deeply embedded in this space, I’ve observed a troubling trend: the focus has been too heavily skewed towards rapid scaling and quick returns, often neglecting the fundamentals that ensure long-term business success. Take the edtech sector, for example. Once the darling of the Indian #startup scene, companies like BYJU's are now facing severe scrutiny, with valuation cuts and layoffs becoming the norm . The race to scale has left many companies with bloated structures and unsustainable business models. And it’s not just edtech—across sectors, we see a pattern where the emphasis on growth at all costs has led to inflated valuations and, eventually, investor disillusionment. In contrast, #bootstrapped startups like mine are quietly but steadily making waves. We’re not chasing the hype; we’re committed to genuine, impactful #innovation, with a strong emphasis on R&D and sustainable growth. Despite these strides, gaining investor trust remains one of our biggest challenges. It’s almost paradoxical—while billions are lost in the pursuit of fast wins, companies like ours, built on solid foundations and long-term vision, are struggling to get noticed. According to a recent report by Bain & Company, the Indian startup ecosystem is entering a new phase where capital efficiency and business fundamentals are becoming the key differentiators . Trending News | Global | M&A in Healthcare and Life Sciences: A Shrinking Margin for Error in Deals In 2023, deal volume declined across sectors, but deal value rose because of notable megadeals in pharma and medtech. The industry is sitting on high levels of cash—$171 billion across pharma companies. Also, top-line growth has a disproportionate impact on total shareholder returns (TSRs) in this industry. In pharma, for example, revenue growth has a seven times greater impact on TSR than margin growth, making inorganic growth especially attractive.
