Have you ever thought about #GPay’s transition from free to paid services? 💡 🌱 GPay's 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲-𝘁𝗼-𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 – A Lesson for #ProductStrategy! Google Pay (GPay) is a #UPI payment service catering to two user segments: individuals and businesses. GPay has played a significant role in making India a global leader in digital payments. Initially, GPay solved a simple problem: enabling users to send and receive money. Over time, it expanded to include features like bill payments, recharges, insurance, and credit card management, creating a seamless digital ecosystem for its users. Like many platforms, GPay’s revenue model includes soundbox charges, partnerships, and more. However, today's focus is on their individual user strategy. 📊 We Indians are known for being conservative with our money, and we tend to avoid spending on apps when there are free alternatives. This mindset is deeply ingrained in our culture. Let’s use mobile recharges as an example: When you recharge directly on your provider's site, you don’t face any extra charges. GPay, too, initially offered mobile recharges for free to get users accustomed to the service. This worked well in the introduction stage of the feature, but as GPay's product entered the maturity phase, it needed to find ways to start generating revenue. 💰 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲: How do you charge users for services like mobile recharges while ensuring they continue to use the app for core features like peer-to-peer payments? GPay started adding convenience charges for mobile recharges. Naturally, users who noticed the extra charge were quick to switch to alternatives. There was likely a drop in recharge frequency as users looked for ways to avoid paying extra. 📉 So, how did GPay turn this around? This is where GPay's reward system came into play! 🎉 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆: 𝟭. 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆: GPay started offering reward coupons for 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘯 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘴. A user would get a cashback coupon for ₹5 to ₹50 with a time limit, tempting them to complete a recharge transaction. 𝟮. 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Once the recharge was successful, the user would receive 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘧𝘦𝘦 itself. For example, if the charge was ₹1.7, the cashback could be ₹6 💸   𝟯. 𝗟𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗪𝗶𝗻: This “let them win” strategy kept users engaged, and over time, many didn’t even notice if they were getting cash back or not. By rewarding users with more than they spent, GPay effectively increased adoption without compromising the user experience. 🙌 The key takeaway for me as a #ProductManager is to Pay attention to how GPay blends #monetization with user satisfaction through subtle nudges and rewards. Is it possible to build an 8-figure DTC brand solely through static advertisements? Obvi, founded by Ronak Shah, Ashvin Melwani, and Ankit Patel, has generated approximately $40 million in sales within just 40 months. This rapid growth is attributed to their effective advertising strategies, particularly their use of static advertisements on platforms like Facebook. It went from $200K in sales to $5M in the early days—all with static ads. Here’s how they did it and what contributed to their impressive growth. Strategic Shift to Static Ads Initially, Obvi focused on video ads. However, as the market became crowded, they switched to static ads. This change allowed them to deliver clear messages without the complexity of video production. [1] Testing and Iteration: Obvi started with a small budget of $100 a day on Facebook ads. They only increased spending after achieving a threefold return on ad spend (ROAS). This careful testing helped them find effective ads before scaling. [2] Focus on Facebook and Instagram: Obvi chose Facebook and Instagram as their main platforms. As their confidence grew, they increased their daily ad spend to $25,000-$30,000, maximizing their reach. [3] Engaging User Experience: Customers were automatically enrolled in an affiliate program after purchase. This program offered a $10 gift certificate and encouraged sharing.
