My India seminar series under the auspices of the India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) continues with a focus on grid storage. Full transcript and slides & video: https://lnkd.in/g8-UwPVD Three things emerged. Recently I published a reaction to a reaction on battery swapping. It can work if the batteries can be hoisted by hand such as in 2- and 3-wheelers, and it can work on same vehicle, same service load, same location, big fleets such as cement trucks where $1.1 million automated swapping stations in depots can be supported. When supporting multiple classes or manufacturers of vehicles, it falls apart. Truck stops aren't going to see swapping, but will see battery buffering. Gogoro was trotted out, as it always as is, but it's a typical SPAC disaster, with a collapsed stock price, losing $70 million a year. Then there's NIO of course, which so far is apparently succeeding where Tesla failed years ago, but I suspect that's short-lived. More significantly, China's fleet operators are buying almost 50% of trucks with swap-capable configurations. Data on how many are swapping is unknown, but my expectation that only the ones that meet the conditions above are. The ISGF studied this years ago and convinced the government to require two- and three-wheelers to be sold without batteries. Now there are a bunch of non-standard swapping firms, with swapping stations in every village. It's imperfect, but the vehicles are much cheaper and firms have filled the void. That's a place where regulation enabled swapping and the spread of vehicles of the size it works for. Still, lots of plug-in vehicles in India as well. Another point of discussion was vehicle-to-grid. I'm bearish on V2G, for a bunch of reasons explained in my articles on the subject and indeed in the transcript of the seminar. The ISGF is debating this, with some senior members pro, and others saying that school bus fleets that have spiky, non-peak service days are one of the few suitable use cases. The ISGF is running an experiment on this, and as I always agree, I could be wrong. Finally, there's the question of pumped hydro. The ISGF a few years ago did a grid storage requirement study and said, at least then, that India should lean heavily on batteries for grid storage due to the constraints on pumped hydro. It's built a lot of battery storage on its grid, as has every other country now. But early grid storage requirements are for fast response and power, and end stage requirements don't require more fast response storage or significant power, but do require massive energy. I urged the ISGF to return to the subject to explore 2030 and later requirements as lead times on pumped hydro are long. India's demand pattern is undergoing a remarkable and welcome transformation over the past decades! The load curve is gradually shifting from an evening peaking system to a noon peaking system, as highlighted in Grid-India's Demand Pattern Analysis, series of reports. There are state-specific nuances, such as eastern and northeastern states continue having evening peaks, which speaks volumes about development across India. Shift is driven by several factors:- Load mix and behavioural changes- Efficient lighting- Increased and efficient air conditioning use for thermal comfort- Shifting agriculture pumping to daylight hours- Overall improvement in quality of life with more gadgets and rising per capita consumption etc etc Besides the diurnal pattern, the seasonality shift from summer peaking vs winter peaking in some states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh adds another layer of diversity, but that’s for another post. It's fascinating to observe how daily peaks and valleys in demand obviously align and dance with sunrise and sunset, yet have slowly shifted over the years, creating a pattern reminiscent of beautiful traditional floor art like Rangoli (Hindi), Alpana (Bengali), Saaz (Kashmiri), Muggu (Telugu), Kolam (Tamil), Zuti (Konkani), and Mandana (Rajasthani). As part of the Renewable Energy ecosystem, we need to carefully plan project performance which has material impact on return on investment. High summer temperatures can significantly impact solar photovoltaic (PV) power projects in several ways: 1. Efficiency Loss: - Temperature Coefficient: Solar panels have a temperature coefficient which indicates how much efficiency drops per degree Celsius above a certain temperature (usually 25°C). Higher temperatures reduce the efficiency of solar cells, leading to lower power output. - Overheating: Excessive heat can cause overheating, reducing the performance of solar panels. This is because higher temperatures increase the resistance within the cells, hindering electron flow. 2. System Degradation: - Material Stress: Continuous exposure to high temperatures can accelerate the degradation of materials used in solar panels, such as the encapsulants, back sheets, and the photovoltaic cells themselves. This can lead to a reduction in the lifespan of the panels. - Thermal Expansion: Repeated thermal expansion and contraction due to temperature fluctuations can cause physical stress on the panels and connections, potentially leading to micro-cracks and other mechanical failures. 3. Inverter Performance: - Thermal Management: Their efficiency and lifespan can be reduced if not adequately cooled. - Derating: To prevent overheating, inverters might automatically reduce their output (derating), leading to lower overall system efficiency. 4. What is happening with 'off-grid' solar? The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PM Yojana) has spurred a significant growth in ‘on-grid’ solar rooftop installations. In Tier 2 towns like Mangalore, numerous system integrators have registered on the MNRE portal, despite facing a sizable entry requirement: an annual performance bank guarantee of Rs. 2.5 lakhs for the entire state. However, this represents a major change from the previous policy, which required a more burdensome guarantee of Rs. 2.5 lakhs per Discom. So, what has been the PM Yojana’s impact on ‘off-grid’ solar rooftop systems (SRS)? Off-grid solutions continue to attract interest, particularly in Tier 3 and smaller towns where power failures remain prevalent. It's crucial to note that for on-grid SRS to function, consistent grid power availability during sunlight hours is necessary. This ensures that solar-generated electricity can be utilized effectively, and any surplus can be exported to the grid as is the case with most residential on-grid SRS in India. Whereas, in off-grid SRS, electricity generated by the solar module is utilized by the household or stored in batteries for future use, without the option to export any excess electricity to the grid. Furthermore, the off-grid SRS has experienced notable benefits amidst the rise in popularity of on-grid SRS. Notably, there has been a marked enhancement in the quality of components utilized in off-grid installations. Present systems typically include several safety features - Array Junction Boxes, DC Distribution Boxes equipped with surge protection and DC circuit breakers, as well as AC Distribution Boxes, previously exclusive to on-grid systems. Moreover, off-grid inverters now commonly feature MPPT (Max. Power Point Tracking) technology, facilitating the extraction of maximum power from solar modules at any given moment. Additionally, a focus on proper grounding for both solar modules and supporting structures has emerged, marking a significant improvement in safety standards compared to previous practices. In conclusion, with over 60% of India's population residing in rural areas where frequent power cuts are commonplace, the demand for reliable energy solutions remains high. While hybrid systems, enabling on-grid solar engagement during power outages, present a promising option, they are still not affordable. Consequently, off-grid solar solutions continue to maintain their popularity, providing a dependable source of electricity for those living in regions where access to quality grid power remains a challenge. Isn’t the figure of $386 billion or Rs.32 lac Crs, mind numbing as the amount of investement required to be done by India to attain Net Zero and a Sustainable Viksit Bharat. We will certainly gain the top position as the largest economy with the largest democracy. The entire world will be looking towards as the biggest market, which would include large ticket FPIs, FIIs, PEs, VCs, Investment Banks and so many more. As we stand on the cusp of a renewable energy revolution and strive for energy independence, the Indian Renewable Sector holds high expectations for this year's budget. Industry experts and major companies are hoping for PLI (Production Linked Incentive) schemes, increased subsidies, lower GST, or reduced import duties. For MSMEs, their primary wish is stability in policies. Historically, the MNRE and the Ministry of Finance have not always aligned their efforts to ensure the growth of the solar industry in the budget. When we began our journey in 2016, there was zero VAT and zero import duties on solar equipment. With the introduction of GST, solar was initially placed in the 5% tax bracket, which later increased to 12% and finally to 13.8% by breaking down the project cost into a 70:30 ratio. Then, a 20% safeguard duty was imposed, which was later reduced to zero, and it was followed by an increase in the Basic Customs Duty to 40% (effectively 44%). Additionally, a non-tariff barrier was imposed. On top of these changes, every state has its own metering and open-access policies. All these changes occurred within a short span of eight years. While everyone supports and wishes for India to become a manufacturing hub and achieve self-reliance, they also desire stable policies. Electricity is a fundamental requirement for any manufacturing setup, and providing access to stable and affordable solar power will ultimately boost manufacturing as well. Therefore, for an MSME in the solar sector or any MSME wishing to install solar rooftops, the primary wish from the budget is STABILITY in taxation and policies. Electricity Amendment Rules 2024 ⚡ India's power regulators must be lauded for enabling policy changes to help meet our energy targets (Adding ~470GW by 2031-32). The latest notification from the Ministry of Power has made it easier for large companies to add capacity. Key changes: 1. No licence is needed to set up transmission lines (to connect to the grid) for intra-state projects greater than 10MW and ISTS projects greater than 25MW. 2. Simplifying and standardising how wheeling charges are computed across states. 3. No additional surcharge (AS) if the consumer is maintaining contract demand.
