Here’s a glimpse of Media Roundtable we organised in Lucknow - "From Conflict to Coexistence: Media’s Role in Shaping Public Perception on Human-Wildlife Interactions." The event brought together conservation experts and journalists to discuss how responsible, solution-driven reporting can reshape the narrative around the rising instances of Human-Wildlife Interactions (HWI) in India. Throughout the discussions, speakers emphasized the importance of avoiding sensationalism and using accurate, scientific language while covering HWI incidents. By doing so, media stakeholders can foster a more balanced understanding of HWI and promote peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife. Journalists were encouraged to collaborate with wildlife experts, ensuring fact-checked, holistic coverage of these pressing issues. The discussions shed light on the power of media in bridging gaps between communities, policymakers, and conservationists, driving positive change for both wildlife and society. Overcrowding Suspected as Cause: Initial reports suggest the event accommodated far more devotees than permitted, with estimates exceeding 50,000 attendees, primarily women and children. Disturbing visuals from the scene depict bodies scattered around the overcrowded venue. Mounting Death Toll and Investigation Launched: The confirmed death toll has climbed to a staggering 116, with many more injured. Authorities are working diligently to identify the remaining victims and conduct a comprehensive investigation. A committee has been formed to determine the cause of the stampede and ensure proper assistance for the affected. Prime Minister Offers Condolences and Relief: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deepest condolences and announced financial aid for the victims' families. Families of the deceased will receive ₹2 lakh ex-gratia, and the injured will get ₹50,000 for medical expenses. MHA/RGI centralised registration of deaths and births last year. For past 4 months, revamped portal has been facing glitches, States flag multiple issues to RGI. The portal dats will be used to update NPR,electoral rolls etc. The Hindu has accessed an August 5, 2024 letter by the Chief Registrar (Birth and Death), Bihar government, addressed to the Registrar General of India (RGI) flagging the issues faced by district authorities while registering births and deaths. Bihar migrated to the new portal on June 10. “Due to the revamped CRS portal being extremely slow, the OTPs (one-time password) not being generated in time and continuous display of error message on the page, there has been a huge backlog in all the registration units in the State. As a result, the Registrars are forced to face the ire of the people and public representatives. The glitches are leading to disruption of the entire system,” said the letter in Hindi. An official in Nagaland said sometimes they were not able to issue certificates for three days in a row. A district official in Chhattisgarh said ever since the State started using the new portal in March this year there “appears to be teething problems” with the system. Migration from neighboring countries has long been a common and vital strategy for sustenance, and the Himalayas are no exception. In this region, Nepali migration, particularly from the Gorkha community, has been prevalent due to the similar climatic conditions between west Nepal and Himachal Pradesh, which make the latter an ideal place for settling and finding livelihood opportunities. However, #climatechange is now significantly impacting this dynamic. The once-favorable conditions that drew the #Gorkha community (Nepali) are no longer reliable. Shifts in weather patterns are disrupting agricultural practices, diminishing water resources, and altering the overall environment, which has had a detrimental effect on their livelihoods. My article for The Economic Times explores the pivotal role of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) in shaping climate dialogues. As COP 16 concluded with the historic step of formalizing Indigenous voices as a subsidiary body, the focus is now shifting from mainstream discourses of 'mitigation' and 'reduction' to the vital need for 'adaptation'. In this piece, I draw parallels with India's efforts to involve indigenous communities in biodiversity conservation and how grassroots governance galvanises participatory decision-making. We all know extreme heat events are becoming more intense and more frequent because of climate change. Right now India is sizzling in 47C during an election. These events are also very different from storms or floods or when it comes to telling the stories about what’s happening. For one, heat events aren’t visual in the same way. But they’re just as a deadly. We know extreme heat generally has a rhythm. Depending on where you are in the world they’re likely to take place during a certain time. Which means they can be planned for. Planned for everywhere, and by everyone: from city authorities to communities, music festivals to sports matches. And crucially, medical centres and hospitals and workplaces. Which means journalists, newsrooms and storytellers can also plan. Plan strategic coverage but also plan to keep their staff safe. This recognition isn’t happening in a lot of areas of our societies. Yet. That’s why we spent five months programming the Oxford Climate Journalism Network’s annual event around the theme “Journalism in the Age of Extreme Heat”. Two days of talks, discussions and community building earlier this month. Thanks to the team, Katherine Dunn Diego Arguedas Ortiz Mitali Mukherjee and Lauren Brown. Thanks to those who spoke, including Surella Segú, Amy Steel and Lou Albano. And thanks to our growing community of media professionals who came to share ideas and knowledge. We all learned A LOT. New work: How successive BJP and Congress governments in Rajasthan violated the landmark Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. RTI data shows that Rajasthan's SC/ST Vigilance Committee, mandated to meet twice a year under the Atrocities Act, met only twice in 13 years(!). Rajasthan has consistently led the charts on crimes against SCs and STs. Chaired by the CM, the Committee is responsible for reviewing the implementation of the Prevention of Atrocities Act. Ideally, it should have held 59 meetings so far since the notification of the rules of the SC/ST Act in 1995 — as opposed to the two times it actually met. Read:
