The Roti, Kapda Paisa aur Makaaan Principle: I was asked three questions at the recent AWS / CNBC TV 18 Gametech conference, and I thought of sharing them here! 1. What's your view on 'game funding and investments' Gaming, unlike most tech businesses, makes money (profits) from Day 1. Look at the greats like Atari and EA and current heroes like King of Candy Crush fame. Getting funded in gaming happens only IF: - You are doing something unproven and unchartered. (Small amounts) - Buying companies to roll up and then list (An investment biz, not a gaming business.) Thus, "Getting funded to 'figure out how to make money' is the most bizarre idea in gaming. It's stupid if not 1 or 2". 2. Profitable application of AI in gaming I believe in the Roti, Kapda and Makaan hierarchy of everything in life. The Roti and Kapda in AI are the basics. At Games2win India Pvt Ltd, we've moved 100% of our translation costs and 80% of our 2D artwork to AI applications, saving tons of money per month. So, the lesson is to start with the lowest rung and move upwards in any 'new tech'. That's my approach. 3. Indian Gaming Outlook? I'm an ardent student of History. What made the most money for India? EXPORTS! First came cotton bales, then garment exports, diamond polishing, and IT services. Now, the time has come for a Digital Product as a Service (PAAS) where we own the IP and make it earn money globally. So we wanna make games for global markets only. Another big ed-tech ‘Unacademy’ is up for sale, merger or bailout. Company fired 250 of their employees yesterday and is struggling with finances. It has approached the likes of Allen, PhysicsWallah, K12 Techno and others. It was also in talks with K12 Techno about the merger but looks like those talks are not advancing. Company has raised $877 million till date and company is searching for a respectable way out. Unacademy's situation highlights the potential turbulence within the EdTech sector. While the industry has seen immense growth, companies are now facing increased competition and the need for profitability. What are your views?

How do you lose monthly active user base of 100 million! It pains me to see how Gaana did just that and is getting lost in oblivion. Gaana was once the largest music streaming service in India owned by Times Internet. Now, India's music industry is complex with loads of regional, bollywood and independent artists. Combine that with various record labels with a stay-out-of-the-door approach. Any new entrant in the streaming space in India would have had to deal with these complexities along with a price sensitive user and incumbents like Gaana. The stage was set for Gaana to become a huge consumer internet product. A first for "developed in India" tag, one which is truly digital. But then, Spotify comes to India in 2019. To start, it teamed up with T-series for 160,000 songs and focussed on Hindi, English and other regional languages from the get go. It took a flexible approach while Gaana was slower to adapt. 1. Spotify offered personalised playlists like Discover Weekly, Release Radar and City Playlists based on the song preferences of people of Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, and Chennai. 2. It used its global brand image well through campaigns like Spotify Wrapped which highlighted user's music listening patterns. This became a viral sensation. 3. This was quickly followed by non-music content like Podcasts on Spotify. 4. Spotify used AI and ML to offer much better personalised recommendations than Gaana. 5. Adaptive subscription model: While Gaana had put everything behind a paywall (what were you thinking!), Spotify was flexible and offered a top-up for 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3month, and 6 months along with the ad supported free version. What Gaana should have done: 1. Gaana should have become on open platform offering its APIs for developers to make more application on its stack (Guys haven't we seen enough tech products doing this?) 2. Pricing: While it is easy to understand that music licensing is expensive, but that is what you know even before starting a platform like Gaana. Coming from one of India's largest business houses, Gaana could have sustained more and made a shot for the moon. My company, Queppelin, worked closely on the technology with Gaana to build the music streaming and compression over the apps. Today, we announce the beta launch of AWAAZ, our multi-lingual , multi-accent text-to-speech model for Indian languages. Top highlights are: 1. State of the art MOS in Hindi, Indian English 2. Speaks in 10+ accents 3. Single shot voice cloning using a 5 second audio clip 4. 200ms streaming latency And the best part is, as an introductory offer, it will cost 10 times lesser than it's competitors - Rs. 999 for 5,00,000 characters! Why did we build AWAAZ? When we started looking for TTS models for building voice-bots for Indian languages, we realized that the current models are either: a) subpar in terms of quality or b) too expensive for scaling up This is true because speech data quality for TTS systems reduces drastically as we move away from English to other languages. With AWAAZ, we explore the use of high quality multi-language, multi-accent datasets and set up a platform on which we will continue building for other languages, prioritizing India and South Asia. Kunal Shah-led fintech unicorn CRED reported a revenue of Rs 2,473 crore in FY24, marking a 66% increase driven by higher product adoption and the growth of monetised users. The startup also reduced its operational loss by 41% to Rs 609 crore. However, net loss—after accounting for employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) expenses and taxes—stood at Rs 1,644 crore, reflecting a 22% year-on-year increase. The Bengaluru-based startup achieved a 58% growth in its monetised user base, while significantly cutting costs. Office groups, Reddit—every community group is asking, "HDFC Pixel card hai kya?" I did a quick Google Trends search too, and of course, the data speaks for itself. The Intention of Intention Starting now, 700+ million people in India will send at least 30 people a "Happy Diwali" message each. That's 21 billion messages sent today and tomorrow Great Intention? Break it down: 98% of messages will be forwarded—the better the image, graphics, and animation, the better the forwards. Of these “forwards”, 98% will be deleted, many not getting read. 2% will hand-type the message with a personal touch The Intention of Intention: "Wishing people" - Genuinely wishing Humans well is now a RARE human trait. (Blame it on life, challenge etc) - Instead of sending one message to 30 people in 1 day, sending one message to 1 person daily will be 1000x more potent than a Diwali. It will be read, appreciated, and replied to. Lastly, a person does not "have" to be a "contact" on WhatsApp. Real Intentions take genuine intentions to manifest. So wishing people we don't know is the real effort of our 'wish you X' intention #Dhandhekibaat - creating, not copying.

Indian News media has undergone a seismic shift while we watched! Traditional mainstream media, once the go-to source for news, has lost ground to digital-first platforms. The recent election results coverage highlighted this transformation dramatically. Dr. Prannoy Roy and Dekoder: shining examples of the digital-first revolution.
