UHC is targeted to cover all, but if the non poor benefit more then the poor, the strategies to UHC need attention. Alok Kumar Singh at Centre for Social and Economic Progress analyses the household consumption expenditure survey data (2022-23) to find that less than 30% of the population in the lowest two quintiles are covered, and 50% of those covered belong to higher quintiles. #UHC #benefitincidence

It's our moral and constitutional obligation to ensure equitable healthcare for all citizens for social and economic progress. Improving healthcare access for the underprivileged is crucial for addressing the country's deep health-income inequality, breaking the cycle of poverty, and reducing the urban-rural divide in medical services. Millions of people suffer from preventable diseases, poor maternal health, and high out-of-pocket medical costs, which further marginalize them. Enhanced access to affordable healthcare, especially preventive services, would improve public health, empower women, and reduce the burden of disease among vulnerable populations. In this write-up, we discuss a comprehensive and collective approach towards building a healthier, more equitable, and prosperous society. Honored to have contributed a chapter on “Emerging role of NGOs in Social Innovations” in the recently published book “Resilient Health - Leveraging Technology and Social Innovations to Transform Healthcare for COVID-19 Recovery and Beyond” edited by Pradeep Kakkattil and Judy Kuriansky The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the paradigm of global health, exacerbating inequalities particularly in the most marginalized communities. It has underscored the centrality of digital innovations in rapidly changing contexts to ensure high-quality health services reach the communities especially the most marginalized. The altered paradigm calls for NGOs leveraging their unique capability to serve as the catalyst and connector to enable communities to design and lead innovations that address health challenges. The current Economic Survey Report, FY 23-24 highlights the growing concern over the mental health of adults and children. It emphasizes that a healthy mind fuels a healthy body and a prosperous nation. ChildFund India employs a bottom-up approach to support and strengthen the mental health issues of children by collaborating with Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi, India. Our joint effort focuses on the mental well-being of children and their caregivers, including pregnant women, new mothers, children, teachers, and adolescents. In addition to providing mental health support, our mental health intervention aims to raise awareness, challenge negative social norms, and reduce both public and self-stigma. This is helping people identify mental and psychological illnesses and maintain their mental well-being. Through our efforts, we aim to collaborate with state govt and work together to enable children to reach their full potential. Recently, we organized a workshop jointly with the Central Institute of Psychiatry to train trainers on children and adolescents' mental and behavioral disorders. There is diversity of wealth/poverty, culture and beliefs, education, access to state nutrition services, and markets. Here are four examples: 🥗 People don't eat diverse balanced diet because many days they don't eat at all! 🏥 Govt provides quality nutrition services but a significant number of people live in hard-to-reach communities. 📡 People choose taste over nutrition awareness about under-nutrition, or benefits of adequate nutrition, is very low! 💹 There are still households prioritising food for men and boys, over women and girls, since they attach 'livelihoods' to one gender. This makes young children vulnerable to various morbidities before they turn 5. We certainly need to deal with root causes of poverty, food security and gender parity. This may take years. Meanwhile, we need to deal with childhood now! Here's what we do. We... ...provide evidence-based interventions, like Vitamin A Supplementation, which 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 ...partner with the 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 ...figure out 𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐬 ...𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥 the gaps in the 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 ...do more of the same, repeatedly till we reach the last nutritionally vulnerable child! Carrying on the journey on #Bamboo, had a very promising interaction with the officials of #Chempolis, India about their community based Bamboo initiatives in Assam. The need of the hour is to #sustainably help our farmers benefit from the resources that are already available with them. While doing so it is important to be #environmentally #sensible keeping the future in mind. Bamboo is an answer that is right in front of us. The opportunities are there not only in providing access to assured markets but also #empowering the #farmers by giving them larger visibility and easy financial accessibility. There is also a tremendous scope of developing local #Entrepreneurship in the various stages of the entire #value #chain ecosystem.

🌟 Unlocking Impact: Understanding the Value-Money-Capacity Cycle in NGOs 🌍 The interplay between value, money, and capacity is pivotal for any NGO's journey. A higher impact often catches donor attention, translating into increased funding. This influx of funds enables hiring experts, thus enhancing capacity. Improved capacity then fuels even greater impact, creating a positive feedback loop. Conversely, a decline in impact can reduce funding and capacity, leading to diminished outcomes. Many grassroots CSOs, despite delivering high impact, struggle to communicate effectively, hindering their ability to attract funding and scale their efforts. At CSA, we empower such CSOs to bridge this gap. By helping them secure more funds, we aim to amplify their impact and foster sustainable change in communities nationwide. The story of a village in West Bengal, looks like any other village in India, depicting a poor, hand-to-mouth situation, and a growing feeling of hopelessness in the community. A community with small land holdings, some linked with SHGs, some not, has been growing only one cash crop, because of lack of arable water during summer. Located in North Sundarban, this village has enough salty backwater, but the rain-filled arable water ponds, do not sustain long. Men are engaged in farming, and women are engaged in cattle and poultry rearing, backyard vegetable gardens, and other activities. 475 households in 5 Paras, with a population of 2850,now face a fast growing problem of labour Migration, in the race to earn more money, to cover inflation and failing crops, due to climate change. AHEAD Initiatives and their Partner CSO have done commendable work to promote backyard vegetable gardening, organic farming, seed conservation, reviving astonishing local varieties of rice, and forming open learning centres, but were struggling to create sustainable livelihoods. A 3-day GLIDE Workshop organised for the village, from 18-20 October, helped the 30 Participants, design 11 Group Livelihoods for themselves, and take back detailed Business Plans for the same. We will share a detailed picture of all the Group livelihoods emerging from the series of 9 workshops (for AHEAD Initiatives), after December 2024. It's heartening to witness a growing number of nonprofits exploring the Social Stock Exchange (SSE) as a transformative means of raising capital. In a space where securing funding is a constant challenge for many NGOs, this move marks a significant step towards sustainability and impact. The potential of SSEs to revolutionise fundraising for NGOs cannot be overstated. By providing access to a broader investor base, SSEs offer a promising alternative to the traditional avenues of fundraising. Indeed, SSEs serve as a catalyst for change by diversifying funding sources, thereby reducing the reliance on unpredictable contributions. This financial stability enables NGOs to focus more on their core missions and less on financial uncertainties. Moreover, with access to capital markets facilitated by SSEs, NGOs can expand their operations and extend their reach to more beneficiaries. This scalability enhances their ability to create lasting social change on a larger scale. Yet, despite the immense potential SSEs hold, many NGOs remain hesitant to explore this avenue. Whether due to apprehensions about the unknown or a lack of understanding about SSE operations, overcoming these barriers is crucial to unlocking the full potential of this innovative funding mechanism.
