The journey of the Unified Payments Interface (#UPI) from its inception to its global expansion is a remarkable example of India’s #digital innovation. Within India, UPI’s growth has been exponential, with transactions soaring from 92 crore in FY 2017-18 to 8,375 crore in FY 2022-23, and transaction values rising from ₹1 lakh crore to ₹139 lakh crore in the same period.   The recent extension of UPI services to the UAE, in partnership with Network International, enables Indian travellers and NRIs to make payments using UPI through QR codes at Points of Sale. This marks a significant milestone, showcasing India’s technological advancements and setting the stage for a more interconnected global payment system.   The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, particularly the UAE, is a key destination for Indian travellers, with numbers projected to reach 98 lakh in 2024. With over 53 lakh Indians expected to visit the UAE alone, the acceptance of UPI payments will greatly enhance their travel experience, offering a familiar and efficient payment method.   This expansion reflects the broader vision of creating a global financial ecosystem that is inclusive, efficient, and secure. The Indian telecom industry is at a crossroads. Easing this burden will free up resources for investment in cutting-edge technologies like 5G and satellite communication, bridging the digital divide and propelling India towards a truly connected future.   The government's vision of a digitally empowered and inclusive India hinges on a thriving telecom sector. The senior care industry in India is already estimated at USD7 billion , with the sector, covering both senior living and out-of-hospital senior care, expected to breach USD30 billion by 2030. That is a juicy market, waiting for smart entrepreneurs. Senior care landscape in India is rapidly evolving, with 18,000 units across the country. The southern region, known for its favourable climate, improved connectivity, prominent healthcare providers, and a higher percentage of parents of NRIs, holds a market share of 62%. Most senior living projects are concentrated in the southern cities of Coimbatore, Bengaluru, and Chennai, which together contribute to approximately 40% of the nation's total inventory. 1.The elderly in India currently comprises a little over 10% of the population, translating to about 104 million, and is projected to reach 19.5% of the total population by 2050. That makes one in five Indians a potential customer for businesses targeting them. 2. Migration over the last few decades has propelled the rise of nuclear families, with individuals often relocating to different cities or countries. Consequently, elderly family members are increasingly living independently. This has highlighted the need for specialised products and services that help maintain their quality of life. 3. With rising affluence, both seniors who have stashed away savings, as well as their kids who are earning good money in their careers, have enough dough to invest in ensuring better quality of life. That means willingness to spend.

I was privileged to attend an extremely simple, yet insightful session on leadership by Mr. Vijay Sethi at the CIO&Leader conference as an ITNext100 Future CIO awardee. He shared 5 mantra's which essentially are integral for building the basic character for being a good leader. 1. Have good work ethics 2. Always have a positive attitude. 3. Nurture & inspire our teams 4. Focus on regularly enhancing our knowledge 5. Be a good human being. All of the above is nothing, if the leader does not demonstrate integrity, he said. One thing that resonated with me the most was his statement - "Good leaders do not create followers, they create more good leaders.". This statement brought back memories of my first tryst with formal leadership education when as a beginner in my professional journey I read the book, Good to Great - Jim Collins, where the author talks about Level 5 leadership who channelize their energies to build successors for their organizations. Something which had become a benchmark of my perspective of good leadership ever since. Creating perpetual organizations which transcend individuals. Of course, Mr. Vijay was talking about building good leaders at societal and business community level, which transcends organizations. As Dr. Prashun Dutta shared in his insights, it is our duty to repay the debt to society by contributing back and enabling others to become good leaders. All in all, a memorable and insightful weekend, where stalwarts took us back to first principles. The name "Blue Town" is derived from Bluetooth technology, originally created in Denmark. Dr. Gupta encountered the founders during a flight and discussed the potential for Wi-Fi technology in India. After a productive eight-hour brainstorming session in Dubai, the founders decided to explore opportunities in India, initially skeptical but ultimately convinced by Dr. Gupta’s insights about the Indian market. Dr. Gupta started as a consultant for Bluetown, eventually becoming the country head and now serving as chairman and founder. His role has evolved alongside the company's growth. Dr. Gupta developed an innovative business model to provide broadband services in rural areas, addressing the gap in data access. His second book, "Long Tail," discusses this research. The managed service model leverages existing telecommunications infrastructure to create Wi-Fi hotspots in underserved areas, enabling better data access for communities without heavy investments from telcos. Hotspots are strategically placed in community-centric locations such as schools, hospitals, and post offices to maximize usage and connectivity for residents.
