MahaYuti Govt earmarks Rs 270 cr for media blitzkrieg for a slew of welfare and welfare schemes ahead of assembly election Sanjay Jog The MahaYuti government, in a run up to the upcoming state assembly election, has allocated a whopping Rs 270 crore for launching a special publicity campaign for its slew of welfare and development schemes during the fiscal year 2024-25. The state general administration department on Monday issued a government resolution (GR) in this regard. The government’s move comes days after the Deputy Chief Minister and Finance and Planning Minister Ajit Pawar in the additional budget announced freebies and sops for girls, women, youth, farmers. The populist schemes included Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, Pink e-rickshaw scheme, mass marriage scheme, Mukhyamantri Annapurna Yojana, free higher education to girls, free power up to 7.5 horsepower for agricultural pumps, Mukhyamantri Tirthdarshan Yojana (pilgrimage visit) and Mukhyamantri Karya Prashikshan Yojana among others. A media blitzkrieg will be carried out through newspapers, TV channels, radio, social and digital media. According to the government resolution, of the RS 270 crore, Rs 136.35 crore have been earmarked for the publicity through private and public hoardings, digital flex banners, state transport bus stand hoardings and side and back panels, BEST bus stops, suburban railway stations and metro railway stations, airports, housing complexes and others. The government has earmarked Rs 51 crore for publicity through social and digital media, SMS, bulk OBD calls,WhatsApp chat bot and WhatsApp messaging and broadcasting and Rs 39.70 crore for publicity through Doordarshan, All India Radio, private FM radio, community radio channels, cinema theatres, audio jingles, local cable networks, public announcements in supermarkets and railway stations. Further, the government has allocated Rs 40 crore for publicity in the newspapers and Rs 3 crore for publicity through small films, documentaries, TVC with celebrities and audio and visual clips. The government’s move is to counter the opposition’s ‘’fake narrative’’ and its criticism that these schemes were ‘’election Jumla.’’ Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has slammed the opposition for questioning the funds needed for the implementation of those schemes especially those for the empowerment of girls and women. On the other hand, Pawar pointed out that the government is ready to spend any amount for financial independence, self-reliance and overall empowerment of all women to increase respect, dignity and self esteem.

Journos in Kargil tend to report events/celebrations. News flow is primarily top down, that is, from the government to the media. Independent journalism is tough owing to lack of manpower and connectivity issues which require money. National media must come forward to empower them to report from their region. Some are doing it.
