You’re looking to hire a new team member. What are the most common interview questions for People Management?
Here are my four favourite questions that I ask along with seeking specific and recent examples: 1. How have you set, socialized/aligned and clarified your team's goals? 2. What methods have you used to give and receive continuous feedback to your team members? 3. How have you structured and invested in your team's development? 4. What methods or approaches have you used to recognize your team? The key attributes I look for (in a manager) from these responses are to assess: 1. Accountability 2. Trustworthiness 3. Care towards the team 4. Empowering the team 5. Fairness

How can you make feedback a regular part of performance management?
The mere mention of feedback can send shivers down anyone's spine. This usually happens because feedback is perceived to be linked to performance or the lack of it. The recipient's psyche is that feedback is always about being judged and making that judgment public. This creates a lack of psychological safety and is a definite recipe for distrust and fear. However, the moment one ties feedback to continuous development and learning, the component of fear is removed and a sense of inclusion and support starts to set in, bringing about a sense of assurance, inclusivity and therefore trust. Giving and receiving continuous feedback should be about taking steps to make our colleagues better and not embarking on a fault-finding expedition.

How can you help your mentee reflect on their own biases?
What has worked well for me is to ensure that the mentee knows that I'm disarmed and even more so that I'm looking out for them. Expressing my own vulnerabilities has helped in the sense that it shows mentees that it's natural to have biases and fears and that no one's perfect. Biases are also a form of emotional conditioning that we pick up at different stages of our lives from different people from childhood to adulthood but they are also capable of being calibrated or reduced over time. Helping mentees surround themselves with socially conscious people at work also helps. In all of this, it is most important to solve this attribute not by preaching but by overcoming this together as partners.

How can you address specific employee concerns from an engagement survey?
Feedback from employees translates into actions that impact the company. It is essential to bring together all the actors that play a crucial role in influencing each other. Isolating managers while solutioning with individuals makes the process counter-productive. While feedback may be bottom-up, actions need to be nuanced, collaborative and driven horizontally.
