#Budget 2024-25: Sitharaman unveils climate finance taxonomy, experts hail move but concerns over greenwashing persist The taxonomy helps classify economic activities aligned with climate commitments along with broader environmental goals other than climate. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, taxonomies provide clear definitions based on science, help avoid greenwashing and help identify eligible assets, activities or projects that are low-carbon, compatible with low-carbon economic development or environmentally sustainable.

My journey began in my childhood, growing up in a village surrounded by water bodies, lush orchards of mangoes, and vibrant ecosystems teeming with sparrows, squirrels, and butterflies. These were not just elements of the scenery; they were vital contributors to the ecology that shaped my understanding of balance and coexistence. Sadly, revisiting that village today is a stark reminder of what has been lost — the orchards have disappeared, the birds have gone silent, and the water bodies have vanished. The space that once thrived with life now stands as a testament to human neglect and environmental decline. The air, once fresh and rejuvenating, is now laden with fumes from vehicles. Monsoon water that once replenished our fields now drains away, leaving behind arid land, with tube wells taking on the task of watering crops at the expense of fuel and electricity consumption — a process that depletes resources and burdens the environment. Fast forward to city life, which once promised so much — comfort, convenience, progress. It didn’t take long for this illusion to shatter. Poisonous air replaced the fresh breezes, adulterated food became a daily reality, and overcrowded roads encroached on what were once vibrant parks. The city offered a stark choice between the metaphorical well and the deep blue sea, each option presenting its own environmental and social costs. These experiences have deepened my belief that the solution lies in returning to the roots of nature — the very essence from which humanity emerged. It is time to acknowledge the toll of our exploitation and move beyond the temporary solutions offered by renewables. We need to reimagine our approach and commit to replenishing the environment with new, thoughtful practices that honour the delicate balance of our ecosystems. This reflection is not just a call for global action but a reminder that individual contributions matter in the fight for sustainability. Here's what sparked my interest in sustainability: #GreenerTogether #LinkedInNewsIndia We live in a world of conflicts, conflicts between nations, ideologies, ethnicities, economic and political interests, and race to control resources - natural and other. However, the adverse effects of these conflicts are impacting the common man, more so, innocent women and children in the conflict zone. Climate Change is causing destruction worldwide and threatening the lives of future generations. Sustainable development is one way to protect future generations' interests as well as the current generation. I am looking for opportunities to contribute my bit to creating a greener tomorrow. During the three panel discussions on waste and circularity at IFAT India this week, one common theme emerged. What do you think that was?   Before we dive into that, here are some key points that might be useful: 1. Shift in Approach: There has been a shift from merely disposing of waste to adopting comprehensive waste management practices in recent years.  2. Waste Management Cost: When implemented collaboratively with households, is relatively low. However, many residents remain reluctant to pay for these services. ( True cost is however yet to be accounted for production, consumption and disposal, topic of another day). 3. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): Currently, EPR is often seen more as a compliance exercise and pricing tool rather than a proactive commitment. 4. Recycling Initiatives: New refinery being established by an Indian conglomerate to recover metals from scrap and e-waste could greatly enhance infrastructure for metals and mineral recovery.  5. Status Quo Inertia: Many communities are stuck in old practices, resisting necessary changes in waste management. 6. Lack of Segregation: Proper segregation of waste at the source is still not fully ingrained in Indian cities. 7. Data Availability: There is a lack of current data on waste elements.   Proposed Solutions: 1. Polluter Pays Principle: This principle advocates that those who generate waste should bear the costs of managing it ( another topic of discussion). 2. Speedy Approvals: Streamlining the approval process for land allotments and facilities to undertake waste segregation and management. 3. HORECA Sector's Role: Hotels, restaurants, and catering services can play a significant role in managing food waste, packaging, and plastic use at a large scale. 4. Reuse and Refurbish: Implementing refillable systems and refurbishment standards can significantly reduce waste generation. 5. Behavioral Change: Emphasizing the need for shifts in consumer behaviour to reduce waste. 6. Recycling Mandates: Similar to existing mandates for plastics, there is a pressing need to require recycled content in electronics. 7. Consumer Advocacy: Raising awareness about responsible disposal and data protection in electronic waste management is essential. 📢   So, what was the common thread? It was the importance of individual awareness regarding the what, why, and how of waste that gets generated at a personal level. This regulatory framework aims to ensure that producers take responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their products, particularly at the end of their useful life, thereby promoting sustainable waste management practices. ▎EPR for Plastic and E-Waste in India 1. Plastic Waste Management:  - The EPR framework mandates that producers, importers, and brand owners (PIBOs) are responsible for collecting and recycling plastic waste generated from their products. 2. E-Waste Management:  - Under the E-Waste Management Rules, producers are required to establish a system for the collection and recycling of e-waste generated from their products. ▎Compliance for Manufacturing Companies Companies must comply with EPR regulations by implementing specific steps: 1. Are Indian Financial Institutions Ready for the Climate Transition? 🌍 The latest CDP report reveals significant gaps and opportunities for Indian financial institutions (FIs) in their climate transition plans. Key Highlights: ▪ 94% of Indian FIs report having board-level oversight of climate transition plans. ▪Only 27% have plans aligned with a 1.5°C world. ▪A staggering INR 1,007 billion in potential financial losses from climate-related risks has been identified, but this is likely underestimated. Did you know only one Indian financial institution has set a target to cut emissions from their investments? It's a major gap in tackling climate risks. Indian FIs need to follow global best practices to thrive in a net-zero future. That means making solid plans to transition to green finance and working with companies to slash emissions. With 💸 INR 1,151 billion in potential financial opportunities, there’s a compelling case for Indian FIs to lead the way in sustainable finance. So, what's the play? Regulators must make climate transition plans mandatory. FIs should lay out their strategies and manage climate risks across their portfolios.
