The pattern in this years' IPL is unignorable. As are the parallels with the corporate world. Teams that are packed, not with individualistic stars, but with hungry performers are more resilient, fight harder and surprise the opposition (RR, PBKS, KKR, DC, SRH have all shown this quality) The captains of the leading teams on the scoreboard are understated and avoid the cult of personality. They also take advice from mentors and seniors, without resentment (Cummins, Samson, KL - to name a few) Managements who persevered with struggling players and kept their teams together through good and bad times are eventually being rewarded by more cohesive performances under duress. When you go for high value hires (especially when you promote outsiders over existing team), a few work out but many don’t. The risk remains. (Cummins worked out, Hardik didn't, Starc remains a question mark) Winning teams don’t put pressure on any one person to win matches. Different team members step up at different times to get the job done. Ownership and onus to succeed are evenly distributed. I have seen this across teams from LSG, to KKR to PBKS. If we could study in-depth the culture of each team (which reflects the values of their owner/management), it would explain exactly what is playing out on the field and in the scores. Ambati Rayudu summed it up in a reflection about his stint at Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings, both winning teams; ‘MI has a culture of jeetna hi hai. Winning is non-negotiable. If you did not win, they would not see the excuse. At the end of the day you have to perform. When I used to play for them, my game improved a lot. But if you play there for long, brain fatt jayega’ And about CSK he says, ‘It has a much better environment. You can play there longer. MI created an environment where you keep getting better. At CSK you are made better, that too without any hassle.’ As IPL teams mature, their persona and value systems are solidifying and like brands, they are assuming distinct identities. If this is true, then players will perform better, if they identify with the team culture. And this should be a criteria when teams choose their players and vice versa. It's all about winning - but the paths to winning can be very different. While IPL teams define their external brand, I wonder how much they introspect about the differences in the internal brand and how it impacts player-franchise fit.

This move is a deeply personal breakthrough for me. Over the last decade and more, professionals in content and digital marketing have often been seen as “digital-only” resources rather than integral marketing leaders. And for very long, I didn't have any answer whatsoever. It often felt like this is all I could do for the rest of my career!
