Zero-rated(0%) is not a Tax Exemption. Dear Tax Enthusiasts, 💥Zero-rated(0%) is not the same as tax exemption, they may have some resemblances. The law is explicit and specific by categorizing some goods and services as zero rated while some goods and services are categorized under tax exemption. Tax exemption is an outright pronouncement that certain goods, services, income or profit are totally excluded from taxes. They are tax-free and not taxable. Typical examples of these are; 🔹 Value Added Tax (VAT); -Baby Products -Basic Food items -Books and Educational Materials -Medical Products and Services -All Exported Services etc 🔹Personal Income Tax (PIT); -Pension Contribution -Insurance Premium -Gratuity -NHF, NHIS etc Under PITA, the above items are deducted from gross income 1 to arrive at gross income 2. Zero-rated (0%) implies that products, services, profit or income are VATable or Taxable but the applicable rate is zero percent (0%). 0% comes with conditions, once you are within the bracket, 0% is applied. Any time the conditions are not met, the tax payer comes back into the normal tax bracket. Typical examples of zero rate(0%) tax are; 🔹Value Added Tax (VAT); -Humanitarian donor funded projects undertaken by NGOs, religious and social clubs. -Goods and services purchased by Diplomats. 🔹Companies Income Tax (CIT); Small companies. There are companies with turnover of less than #25m. Zero rated items are taxable but their applicable rate is 0%. When 0% is applied it will lead to no tax but this is not an outright exemption. If an item, income or profit is declared tax exempted, it literally means no tax is payable on it. Though, the two might lead to no tax payable in a particular period. 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗮𝘂𝗷: 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗕𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 It is said that perfume flows through the drains of Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, and this is no exaggeration. Known as the 'Perfume Capital of India,' Kannauj is home to around 300 distilleries 🇮🇳 A pleasant fragrance lingers in the air, with remnants of roses and other flowers strewn across the city, including the drains 🌹 The old-world perfumery still uses the traditional method of distilling perfumes that are based on essential oils and not alcohol. India grows over 30 of 300 naturally fragrant raw materials required to manufacture perfumes, and is also a leading supplier of essential oils like mint, jasmine, sandalwood, tuberose and spices in the global market. Perfume-making in Kannauj is a primary profession and steeped in history and mythology. According to local legend, the business of perfume-making in the city started with Mughal empress Nur Jahan, wife to emperor Jahangir, in the early 17th century. The empress used to bathe in a pool with rose petals and once noticed that the flowers would leave behind oil in the water and concluded that the fragrant oil could be extracted from flowers. Kannauj's strategic location near major cities like Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow and Delhi and its fertile soil by the Ganga further established it as a perfume hub. In Kannauj, the traditional way of hydro-distillation is still widely in use instead of the newer and faster method of steaming. Perfumers in the city believe that this traditional method gives an unmatched fragrance. Almost everyone in the city is engaged in 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘢𝘳-making in one way or another. The first part of the process starts at the break of dawn when farmers and labourers go to their fields to pluck flowers of the season 🌺 These flowers are then transported to distilleries, where they're put into huge vessels called 𝘥𝘦𝘨 made of copper 🌸 An average vessel can hold 100 kgs of flowers of varying sizes 🏵️ The tightly-packed 𝘥𝘦𝘨 is then capped with clay so that air can't escape. These are connected to a 𝘣𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘬𝘢, another receiver made of copper, which acts as a condenser and is placed in a water tank. The 𝘥𝘦𝘨 is put on fire on a furnace and the 𝘣𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘬𝘢 distills the steam 🔥 Among Kannauj's unique attars is 'Mitti Attar,' capturing the smell of rain (petrichor) in a bottle 🌧️ Kannauj is not just a place on the map; it's an olfactory journey. ✨ Hello fellow connections: ✨ As I have completed my internship at a CA firm, I want to share my experience with everyone and the things I  learned during my internship tenure. I had never been to an on site internship at a CA firm. I remember I was really nervous on my first day of internship because I had to work with CA articles,which for me was very new and intermediating, but as soon as I completed the orientation all my fear and doubts were vanished not only because I had cake on my first day (it was someone's birthday) but also because the people were extremely welcoming. Few days after my first day were a little difficult and confusing but I got through that obviously because of my seniors and dare I say friends. To sum it up I would say that my internship experience was a little of both - fun and learning. I will always be grateful that I was given this opportunity.  Personal learning:  ✔ It's okay if you're not a perfectionist: I have a tendency to make every job I do ‘perfect’ but that often leads to procrastination and disappointment. ✔ Ask questions: On my first day of internship I didn't know what was happening and I had very small doubts regarding everything, which were very embarrassing for me to ask. Later I learned that it's okay to ask even the smallest of doubts even if it makes you look stupid. (they're not going to remember you after 5 years, but you'll learn something that you'll never forget) ✔ Don't expect everyone to be like you: I met very different people during my internship and it made me very uncomfortable at first but made me realise that different people with different thought processes makes you a better person and it made me experience the concept of ‘synergy’ for the first time. She left Raipur, Chhattisgarh, to pursue this opportunity, bearing all her expenses in a pricey city in Mumbai. Eager to secure a job, she approached various teams and even the manager. The response was disheartening: "You don't have an engineering degree, so there's no chance for you." Shocked and disappointed, she questioned why they chose a BBA profile for an internship if only engineers are considered for jobs. The company remained silent. Tax Troubles Brew for Indian Employees of Foreign Firms over Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) and triggers Black Money Law Residents working for Indian subsidiaries and arms of offshore parent companies have received Income Tax notices pointing out undisclosed or untaxed amounts for discrepancies related to Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) 🔹The Issue: The Income Tax department has identified gaps between what employees report on their annual tax returns and information received through revenue department through laws like the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA). 🔹Unreported Reinvestments: Some employees failed to report reinvested dividends. These dividends were used to purchase additional shares instead of being deposited in their bank accounts. The accrued dividend (taxable in India) and the additional shares were not disclosed in ITRs by employees. 🔹Pankaj Bhuta, founder of the Mumbai-based chartered accountant firm P.R.Bhuta & Co. " Tax evasion is not intended. Some tax on the dividend has already been deducted abroad and the differential is to be paid in India. Since taxpayers would be eligible for foreign tax credit, in most cases, there would not be a motive to evade taxes in India.
