Recently, during the final phase of the 'Build For Good' hackathon, a citizen open innovation initiative by Open Government Products, I was invited to deliver a speech at Lazada One on my sustainability innovation journey, and had the privilege to guide the top five innovation teams on crafting sustainable solutions using tech, ranging from an application using AI to identify bird calls to redistribution of unused medication and medical supplies. Additionally, I was invited to return to my alma mater to inspire the next generation of innovators in the Raffles Global Studies Programme. #Deepdive: Rs 220cr SEED FUNDING at Rs 800-1k crore valuation! Mega seed funding rounds are back as days ago, Myntra and Cult founder Mukesh Bansal raised a seed round of $26mn for his new venture- Lyskraft. That’s about Rs 220 crore! So, are we back in the exuberant times? Let’s deepdive into what this means. .. First, some basics: -> Ten years ago, India had about 51 major VCs, PE or Family Office entities which invested in startups -> Now that has grown fiercely competitive, with the figure being north of 1.2k such entities That explains why the average seed round in 2014-2015, or even 2017-2018, was under $1 million, which has now grown to about $2-2.5mn, which is raised at ~$8-10mn valuation (Rs 65-85cr) When a good founder or startup comes around, VCs go all in, chasing them for an allocation. FOMO is a powerful driver here. .. And when we say good founders, the category which tops the list is that of seasoned and repeat founders. These guys command a big premium in the market when they go out raising funds for their new ventures. And that too makes sense. .. But, Rs 220 crore funding at Rs 800-1k crore valuation for something at seed stage? That’s 10x of the average we just talked about! -> Leaving aside some star startups, in most cases, mature, scaled and proven startups also don’t get valued that way, irrespective of how seasoned and pedigreed the founder may be -> How does this make sense? Especially when we have already lived through those crazy times when we saw it happen first during COVID-19? -> Before Covid, there was only one major instance, when CRED’s Kunal Shah raised a $30mn seed round in 2018 .. I get it. Bansal's track record does carry significant weight. The valuation reflects the investor confidence in his capabilities, more than the specific business model at this early stage. Yet, how are such inflated valuations being arrived at valuations right out of the gate, regardless of the actual traction? -> That too for a startup in a space where nobody except Reliance’s AJIO has begun to make profits after years of investment and burn, including Myntra, Tata Cliq, Nykaa Fashion etc -> As a newbie to angel investing and VC space overall, I find it deeply unsettling and crazy Are we back to the days where 'potential' outweighs 'proof'? .. I may be wrong. But, this feels like déjà vu. Like we setting ourselves up for another cycle of overvalued startups followed by harsh corrections? Lessons from the past seem to be forgotten quickly. Probably dividing that Rs 220 crore into Rs 20 crore cheques for 11 startups at the seed stage would have sparked more sense for someone like me. But then, what does a newbie know? Here to learn! Acculi Labs Seed Round Closure:- Few Pointers and Answers to Question A. Are PAIO and The Current Round the Same/Different? i) PAIO-I, and PAIO-II(2021) were meant to do clinical trials and validate Lyfas Mobile Clinical Application, and build our diagnosis engine. ii) PAIO-III(Equity December 2022) round was raised to pioneer our home medicines and therapeutics. iii) A small angel round of 8L(2023 July) distributed over 10 months was raised from one of our PAIO investors for Genetic Integration in the Lyfas system, and for building a massive data ingestion system. iv) PAIO-4(Mar 2024) was raised to start unlocking the value potential of Lyfas and creating Lyfas Udyam. This is the current round, which is also building the PAIO-currency and PAIO-value economy for integrating small-scale entrepreneurial businesses into Lyfas Udyam. v) SABI HOLDING INDIA LIMITED and Acculi Labs Pvt Ltd have been working together in a Joint Venture(JV) for sustainable living, Organic Farming, Microbiome research, Medicinal Plants, Organic Fertilizer, and Urban farming over a 10Acre land(about ₹420 Cr net value) on the Delhi Jaipur highway since 2023. vi) A part of PAIO-4 money has also gone into the development of Lyra, the Lyfas conscious AI. vii) Therefore, PAIO is to experiment, research, gather data, and train Lyra and Lyfas systems, whereas JV is taking all the technology and processes to a a larger population, alongside integrating Agriculture into the project. viii)The seed round and all the other major investments are directed towards the purpose of JV and Lyra. JV, for the expansion, and Lyra, for eliminating humans from the decision. Therefore, the purpose of PAIO and JV Corpus are different, their accounting and auditing are different, and both will grow and walk simultaneously. B. Capital Structure i) Even though Acculi now has a diversified business and tech portfolio, each of the verticals and projects under the company already has individual finance, structure, flow, and integration endpoints. ii) Over a period of time, each of these entities will operate independently under independent management and also have independent valuation and trading. iii) Like Sabi, there will be other collaborators and partners over the period of time. iii) Acculi will remain to be a mother entity and holding company for the brands and businesses. Systems, processes, and macro-policies of the ecosystem would stay with Acculi. iv) Our PAIO investors will continue to hold a stake at the mother entity, as well as PAIO investment consultancy pvt. Ltd(where PAIO banking is developed). C. So the private reservation bill for jobs in Karnataka is on hold. It’s crazy how reactionary the internet is though. I know the media needs to attract eyeballs and mainstream news is designed to be inflammatory, but damn, why do people have to do the same thing? Every time there’s a problem in Bangalore such as traffic, rains, some politician promising something impossible (this bill was most probably a piece of posturing), people attack the city like vultures flying around a dying animal. - Almost every large Indian city has severe infrastructure issues. India Inc. is in the process of rebuilding. There are roads, flyovers, underpasses, metros, monorails being built. Ofcourse the roads are going to be terrible to navigate. - Many people were championing Gurgaon, even though Haryana government tried to pass a very similar law that was quashed by the court. Besides, seeing the crazy high temperatures that the city is reaching in summers, it’s not going to be fit for much of anyone really soon. - People all over India engage in the process of othering. As an Indian from the north living in the south, the taunts about dark skinned madrasis is really no better than what some people here do to northies. We need to grow up as a country and realise that we are an interconnected economy and that we cannot survive without each other. - All states in the south, just like states in the north have myriad of problems. From overzealous unions, to unstable governments, to hostile local populations. Nobody is perfect. Want to promote your city as the next hub? Do it! India has space for many, many mega cities and industrial hubs. But do it by promoting the positives of your place. Not by pulling others down. Chandigarh is a fantastic planned city, Indore is well known for its cleanliness, Pune is close to Mumbai and has excellent weather. Moreover, a lot of companies have offices all over India. My own company has offices in Hyderabad, Mumbai, NCR etc. Your gain doesn’t have to be Bangalore’s loss :) Don’t engage in the politics of hate. We have enough forces internally and externally trying to divide us as is. If you still want to leave Bangalore, please do. In an interview with Startup Pedia, Dr. Ayushi Jain Gupta shared, “When I founded Nora, I envisioned a brand with a deeper purpose - a commitment to functional products with love for environment.” This vision led to NORA, a brand dedicated to revolutionalising green spaces. Nora offers a diverse range of products from planter pots, outdoor garden furniture, and kids toys to school furniture. The distinguishing factor has been the focus on convenience and sustainability. Dr. Ayushi explains, “A common issue I noticed was the fragility of planter pots. Like many of my friends, I found myself constantly replacing them because they would crack so easily. This inspired me to design a planter pot made from recyclable materials that is not only sustainable but also crack-resistant.” Nora’s planter pots and garden furniture are made of high-grade polymer material which is eco-friendly and recyclable. The pots are UV-resistant, crack-proof, and durable. The startup's outdoor furniture has also gained popularity. It is premium, ergonomic, and 100% sustainable. The USP here is the built-in LED lighting solutions. Nora’s products are currently listed on Amazon, Pepperfry, and its own e-commerce website. In its first six months, NORA clocked Rs 3 lakhs per month in revenue. Now, in FY25, it has grown to Rs 10 lakhs, with a projection of reaching Rs 25 lakhs per month by next year. As an entrepreneur, Ayushi is actively engaged in the startup ecosystem across India. In 2023, she was selected for the prestigious Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women program, hosted by IIM Bangalore. Building on this, in August 2024, Ayushi participated in the "Accelerate Your Growth" program conducted by Indian School of Business (ISB). Looking ahead, Nora aims to become a lifestyle brand that offers products high on functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability.
